Mostly non-item-based tamer template?

Here's a hypothetical question for the taming veterans out there. If someone asked you to design a tamer that was primarily focused on taming rather than pvm/pvp, with the further restriction that the tamer could only use minimal items and be able to keep functioning even after dying in the field (and not able to recover their body), what would you suggest?

As for what I mean by minimal items, I guess only blessed items and little or no insured equipment. So no reagents, bandaids, etc. The template would not rely on any skills-enhancing equipment.

By the way, this hypothetical tamer would want to be able to tame anything in Sosaria.

I have some ideas about how to build such a character but am still too new to the taming game to know whether or not my ideas are, as Mike Tyson once said, ludicrisp.

Thanks!

Ok just to Tame creature ???

Taming Lore 120
now you will need to be able to get around so Magery with LRC since you dont want regs. But you HAVE to gate to move the fresh tames.

So I have a True Legendary Tamer

120
Tame
Lore
Vet
Mage
Eval
Med

I can tame ANYTHING and i use the skills and tamed pets to get Honor up so I can Honor tame Greater and other critters that get, angry

But to say you want to be a tamer just to tame doesnt really fit, and you will need either LRC or regs to get around.

But thinkng about a naked tamer????

Tame, Lore, Chiv, Hiding, Music, Peace, Stealth

The only item you might need would be an instrament.
With this you could tame anything, run away if needed, and use chiv and the pet logging to get them around?????

Weins,

Yes, thinking of something along the lines of your second suggestion. Was also wondering if herding might be an option. Not sure I want to ever try something like this, but am interested to hear what veteran tamers think.

Thanks for your reply!

I never though about such a template but this are my first thoughts :

If you plan only on taming without hunting or training your pets, then no need of Vet.It's 120 skill points to use elsewhere and no need for bandages but less stable slots.

No regs and no LRC suit means no necro/magery/mysticism.
A tamer without magery is not easy to play. specially harder to tame aggressive pets if you can't invis. Even paralyze can be helpful sometimes. No gate to bring your freshly non mountable pets to the stables, no create food when a pet is going wild and you need to feed it quickly. No long range healing/cure if your pet is attacked before you had time to go to a safe place.

No bandages means you need a magical way to heal/cure yourself and your pet.As we eliminated some you're left with chiv and spellweaving.
Chiv has some good points, like sacred journey that you can use instead of recall. Remove curse is nice too.But the downside is that most spells are useless without Karma (close wounds heals less for instance) and if you plan only on taming you wont earn any.And none of this spells are helpful to fight if you're not using a weapon.
Spellweaving doesn't need FC/FRC, regs, any additional skill to boost it, has healing and damging spells. Etheral voyage that you can use instead of invis to lore pets before taming. But it's useless without a focus has cool-down time and no traveling spell (recall ...) and the healing/cure spell is not really the most easy to use or efficient. I would go with it anyway, but it's not as good as magery.
Anyway if you decide to go with any of these you'll need medit or focus as you wont have any mana regen on your suit either.

As you can't fight with this template, not even with your pet (not bonded and no regs/magery to heal), hiding/stalth would be a life saver, for you at least. A lot of skill points though in an already crowded template (120 taming/lore).

Another helpful combo is music/peace, that will keep you and your pet alive and help you taming most of the aggressive pets. I wouldn't do without. And an instrument GM made only costs 10 gp to insure.

With all that I would probably go for a template with
Taming
Lore
Music
Peace
Spellweaving
Focus/Med (depending if your armor is medable or not, but preferably med)

It would be much better adding hiding, but Without any item to add skill points I don't see how.

And still I see one problem left :

Non item based means no guarantee to have a full 70 resist suit.
As much as peace helps along, you'll be hit when trying to tame aggressive pets, specially if you can't invis after the taming attempt begins.
And if you don't fight with this char, no way to gain honor. No way either to weaken the pet before taming.
With all this I don't see how you'll be able to tame a GD on your own.

Whatever you decide to do, let us know how it went, Im' very curious...
And good luck to you ! :D

Can't do what you're asking. You either need insured LRC items or you can use blessed (armor) of (virtue) that you find. I'm not sure if Bless deeds work on things like Armor of Fortune, etc. If it does you're good, just bless your LRC armor.

Even though you can't use bandages you'll want Vet to res and for stables. So the bandage thing is kinda gonna go out the window as well.

You'd probably want Taming, Lore, Magery, Spellweaving for Gift of life, the rest is really up to you.

Perhaps if you told us the purpose of this toon we could give you better ideas. is it for some sort of orc fort roleplay orc tamer that is just gonna res over and over again and toss pets at people?

JD,

The question I originally asked myself was whether it was possible to have a low-cost, low-maintenance "naked" tamer that would focus on taming animals rather than PvE, and wouldn't have to sweat it much if they were killed by the tamed target or surrounding spawn. I guess their purpose in life would be to tame animals for others, rather than taming for themselves and then fighting with their pets.

As I said earlier, I don't know if I would ever actually try such a character, but I thought it was an interesting thing to ponder. A former knight who tired of battles, swore a vow of poverty, and became a hermit/monk tamer? That might address the karma issue assuming chivalry was on the template to travel, heal, etc.

I would probably have to amend the "tame anything in Sosaria" requirement to exclude creatures that needed to be beaten into submission to tame - that might get a little tricky...

gortman,

The only creatures than cannot be tamed without being eaten into submission are the giant and fire beetle.

But without magery to invis, heal yourself, a good armor to be able to stand some hits and/or high level honor and/or beat the pet down it's almost impossible to tame the most powerfull pets, even with peace.

And about your Karma level, even if your char has high karma before it becomes the hermit/monk tamer, it'll loose Karma if you don't gain more and after a time (not so long) chiv will be useless.

I have what I consider a low cost, low maintenance tamer, that is able to tame alone almost any pet on Sosaria without dying too often (I still need help for fire beetles because of the spawn around).
It's a classic peace tamer (120 taming, lore, music, peace 100 magery) with an imbued suit all 70 resist, 100%LRC, 6 MR and a lot of luck that I bought for 200 000 gp, not very expensive in my opinion.
If you don't PVM you could try the same without luck but with LMC instead.

Except for the GM instruments and repair deeds, it's a self sufficient char.

I'd probably suggest you run a tamer similar to the main char I use.

Stealth mage tamer with the option for swapping eval int out for herding as necessary:

120 tame, lore, vet
100 Magery
100 Eval or herding (mostly I use herding)
100 hiding
the rest in stealth

You could easily take 20 from your vet skill and use that to boost your real stealth skill up. I run around with a burglar's bandana on most of the time.

I use arcane clothing on my stealther so I don't have to worry about LRC on all the suits she uses.

I always carry some bandages just in case I need to rez a pet or keep a fresh tamed critter alive.

So you could make a naked taming only character, but you don't have to just restrict that char to taming pets.

Thanks Wenchy - I have thought about starting a stealth tamer, which got me thinking about a "naked" tamer, which lead to this thread. I like your suggestion.

Recently I was also reading some older posts on the forum about herding - that looks like it could be a ton of fun on a stealth tamer template. Herding armies of ki-rin to attack the cyclops camp, or greater dragons to Oaks spawn - very cool! The pictures from those old posts are priceless. :)
