The majoity of the UO player base is in Japan according to the last comments from the Dev team, so I suspect the least populated shards will be in the US / Australia.

Well, I don't know what qualifications you are looking for, but LA just did a massive group gathering against Meraktus tonight. So the shard may be small, but it does put up numbers at time.

Dittos Chango. I get so tired of folks bashing Lake Austin. Yes its a young shard compared to some but when it comes down to doing what needs to be done we always show up and do it. The Ophidian invasion is a prime example..although we didnt clear out the fel side...we kicked but on the tram side....and we did what we could in the Magincia invasion as well. Just because we dont have hordes of people haning out at the Luna bank at all hours of the day and night folks think our shard is doomed. Well some of us LA residents have better things to do than bank sit. We utilize the lands and resources and do our best to have a good time. So please stop all the shard bashing and worry about your own shards....if you dont like LA or Origin then dont go there. Pretty simple, Huh?

Origin and LA are two of the deadest shards. No arguments.

Origin I have to agree on, though we have more people coming, but at the same time, more people quickly transferring off.

What can we do to -draw- people to our shards and get them to stay?

Well .. deadest? humph ... only one I remember mention of as being in danger of closure ... due to low pop ...

Wasn't LA or Origin ... and only EA actually has any kind of Numbers to look at ...

Why do you want a "consensus" vote from the boards ?

Even MORE meaningless than your question ...
imo

*shrugs*

Get the people there to work on building the community...and if you really wanted to be a fan favorite kick the zerg guilds out of the Champ spawn areas...but I don't see that happening.

Why is there a bigger player base in Japan? Is it cause most people still use 28.8k modems over there?

Oceania is so quiet you can look in the mirror and then run around the town come back and still see your reflection in the mirror!

That is the dumbest thing I have heard in forever. I will tell you a secret. The folks in japan have nothing less than 30MBIT connections. Hell 30MBIT in japan is crap connection comparable to our 56k dial up. Why is the connection so nice over there? The government controls the net in that country not greedy little ISPs like here in the states.

I should have noted that I was just using sarcasm to add a comic relief on my question. but I guess UO is has larger player base in Japan because it is so.

Maybe the Japanese have a tendency towards motion sickness or something from 3D games? After all, an anime had some strobe effects, a few years back, that caused illness, including seizures, in a larger percentage of viewers than one would expect for the average number of persons that supposedly have those susceptibilities (epileptics, and others). If 3D games like WOW and most FPS give enough of them headaches, they will obviously stick with a game that WON'T make them sick.

Also, given that most first-person games prior to the 90s console wars seemed to originate in the west, and a lot of the Japanese games at the time COULD have been first person, but were done as third person overhead or angled view, perhaps there is a cultural bias.

I've actually been at a game panel at an anime con, where many ideas were bandied about, but no real conclusions could be drawn - it just seemed that several factors tended to make overhead views like that of the early Ultimas (And UO) & Final Fantasy games more popular there than in North America & Europe.

CiscoKid, I've been tracking activity at the Moonglow Zoo for three months and for a while was tracking activity at the library and museum as well. (See Zoo Collection Points thread in the Tamer forum for info on the zoo.) You may want to look through the zoo figures just to see which shards consistently rank at the bottom to get an idea of which shards are the quietest, at least among tamers and folks who might want the zoo rewards.

Don't put siege on that list! Siege is quite active, but you need to know where to go!

I have no idea.

NOTE TO EA: Give back a server east of the Rockies and west of the Appalachians!! Bring a server to the one big middle of the U.S. Or rename them. It's false advertisement. Lake Superior implies something.

Thank you for your replies. I am seeking spawning outside of my home shard (Sonoma) while having two of my guildies in a *bag*. (Having all their suits, skills on stones, powerscrolls for new chars, mounts, and books to save an xfer.) I first went to Oceania and received some opposition and major lag. Now I'm on Arirang, I think I like it. I found a crossbow, 46 fireball, 44 lower defense, 40 ssi, 45 di on a vendor for 10k. Thanks Japan

[/ QUOTE ]The Japanese players are fun and polite. The language barrier can be difficult, but fortunately (and impressively) most of them speak a little English.

It is quite amuzing. My guild has allied up with another Asian guild, and it's very fun. They all ride swampies, and fight sorta wierd. But I found some GREAT deals on vendors. Whenever they fight they call it "War Time."
