ok is there a thread or does someone know the frequency or spawn rate of the mined gems? is there a coorelation between the ore mined and the gem spawned? i got two fire rubys from shadow ore... that started the thought process. id appreciate any help and suggestions on making mining a little less tedious id like to get some gems and make some jewelry...

Unfortunately gems are totally random. There is no correlation between ore color and gems or the frequency of gems. The more you mine the more gems you'll randomly find.

...

The gems are random, though you have a better chance of getting them if the miner is an elf

Mining for gems is not affected by this change at all, nor is lumberjacking for the special items (bark, amber, etc).

Gems have a flat chance of being mined up on each successful mining attempt. The gem type is totally random - it's not affected by the underlying ore type. You have a 0.6% chance of mining up a gem, with an equal chance of getting any of the six gem types.</blockquote>
