Metal containers

Can someone please tell me if metal containers (boxes, chests) are a player made item. If so, what skill do they require.

If not, are they buyable from an NPC?

Not 100%sure, but i believe that they arent craftable. I believe they are only from maps or paragons now.

Although someone may be better suited to answer.

Dont forget the fished up chests ('recovered from a shipwreck').
Depending on which metal chests you are looking for ... there was a time when it was possible to 'feed' plaque beasts to increase their loot and have them spawn a metal chest on their corpses. (Done by provocation or summoned animals, whose corpses were absorped by the beast at their death. Not shure if this still can be done.)

You can still get metal chests by feeding plague beasts, at least you could a few months ago. There are also gold metal boxes that are old coowner strongboxes and from idocs.

The gold boxes that used to be strong boxes can only hold 25 items, I can't remember now but they used to be illegal to own. I think they're currently legal, or no one cares enough to do anything about them...the gold metal boxes from idocs are fairly common. I think I used to sell them at 25k a pop and they'd go decently, but I don't get enough now with current idoc competition on Baja to be able to stock them regularly.

No, a 125 item strongbox is just a metal box that has been turned with the deco tool.
