Resisting Spells doesn't reduce direct magic damage.

This skill helps you lessen the severity of spells that lower your stats or ones that last for a specific duration of time. It does not prevent direct-damage spells, like Energy Bolt or Flamestrike.

I read the tooltip.......Just wanted to be sure that there was not an unlisted benefit. Thank you both for your replies.

Resist spells does give you natural resists up to 46 though, iirc.
So if you're not wearing any armour, or your armour lowest resists are lower than 46, resist spells will give you that much resist on that element.

So yeah, in a way it reduces the damage you take. But you usually doesn't notice that because your armour is often over that natural amount that resist spells give you.
