Lumberjacking Improvement Idea

I got an idea on how to improve lumberjacking:

Trees corruption: add to an axe could have the property of "Corrupted". While using a corrupted axe on a tree the force of nature will anger against the lumberjacker in 3 possible ways:

- "The animals around the tree begins to attack you!": all the animals became red and "(angry)" and attack you. Every animal killed will disappears leaving some logs (20-30) of low level type (plain or oaks)

- "By corrupting this tree you wake up a driad!": an insane driad will attack you. When killed the driad disappears and medium-low level logs will appears (30-50 logs of plain, oaks, ash or yew)

- "A treefellow feels the pain of the tree and arrives to protect it": a feral trefellow will appear and attacks you. When killed he disappears and leave 80-100 high level logs (heartwood, bloodwood or frostwood).

SPECIAL: each map will change the monsters a bit:
- Trammel: plain monsters
- Felucca: same monsters with +50% extra wood when die
- Ilshenar: chance of paragon monsters and paragons will dorp +50% extra wood
- Malas: the monsters drops 50% less wood but there is a chance to drop 1-10 crystal shards
- Tokuno: monsters are weaker and drops -30% wood
- Ter Mur: monsters could spawn in void shape (double speed and damage) with a chance to drop 10-20 void orbs or void essence instead of wood.

the chance to spawn those creatures is the same of elementals for mining

With a high level of lumberjacking and tinkering you can use 10 small pieces of blackrock to corrupt an axe that will have 50 uses or 10 crystalline blackrock for 100 uses. A corrupted axe became cursed. When the uses are over the axe is destroyed.

Before the new jacking I did a huge write up about Reaper Axes and treefellow spawn for higher end woods. As written in history when they added the rare woods they rewarded scripters. Years of script mining and they bring in the new woods with a museum turn in to further line their pockets. Would have to have code mages that have combat mined to know how to really improve jacking.
For starts.

All rare wood and ingots should just be gotten off spawn. Spawn that will rip the head off a gather if they aren't an active player. Still it is not ways to improve the game that I still share ideals and thoughts about it. More so it has become finding a reason to still pay a monthly fee for a load of deadfalls.

Sad thing the minds of the game desiners are like a bunch of cooks that never taste their own food. Sure there are things to add to spice up the game. But they never know the effect the end dish served will be like or what changes are needed. Latest no brainer is at a rares fest someone shows face that is on the payroll from our fees. Spawning a Harbinger and a Paragon Slasher at an event like that was not entertaining but purely ass9.

Guess just any new ideals will not have the players voice heard so experience makes what is best for the game. And the lack of a live GM death squad to police the game will keep UO at the current yard sale level venue.

Thats some interesting thinking there Pinco. But I think I like it. Especially the animals and Dryad and Treefellow.

Would be like using the Gargoyle pickaxe.

I think it should bump the wood your getting too.

Perhaps it could be a drop on Dryads this special axe but unlike most axes it needs to have uses.

Good idea though.... Liking it.

the game is not all about scripting... so improving the game by thinking only about "how avoid script" will make the life hard to everyone and not enjoyable...
And all this speak about scripting, cheating, and witches hunting makes the game totally boring and destroy every purpose of fun.

You see someone scripting? call the gm if you want to do the police man, but that's all. It's no mine or your business to hunt scripters or cheaters, so let's live our little life by focusing on having FUN in game instead of cry about someone cheating.

Said that, the feral treefellow are pretty hard to take down, just take a look in ter mur ;)

We already have Melisande's Corroded Axe, with a +5 lumberjacking bonus that's worthless for a GM Lumberjack, so how about making this already existing item the special axe...? Saves the devs from creating the new item.

I like the idea, I find lumberjacking kinda boring so being able to spice it up sounds cool!

Of course, if the devs want to make a new tool for lumberjacks, how 'bout a "Magical Saw of Orbiting Teeth" (chainsaw). They could be powered by arcane gems! :dunce:

the tool must have uses in order to make all a bit hard, so the melisande's hatchet can't be an option unless they don't make it with uses :p

about the tool:

This seems more like an Imbuing skill.

Would be nice to have a use for blackrock... maybe make it an imbuing ingredient that can be used on multiple items for various effects?

I like this idea. Might need some adjusting, but I like it. i have seen a few other posts with similar ideas to "enhance" lumberjacking.

Along with this, i think the Devs should have a couple of team members focusing on "skill enhancements/balancing". This doesn't need to be drastic changes, but even small increments to skills would be an improvement.

I do not know anyone that would have a problem with Lumberjack, Taste ID, Item identification, Camping skill love.

How about removing the lumberjack bonus all together and make the skill for resource farming only since it's capped at 100.

Then make an entirely new SKILL like Two Handed Weapon Specialty and give it some good damage bonuses for ANY two handed weapon and then the 5% crit bonus like they just recently add to only axes. Maybe toss in a few new spells in there too like the newly improved bardic spells.

Two handed melee weapons need some lovin!

There could be 2 trees of skill routes.
The Strength route which would offer even greater DI.
The Dexterity route which would offer speed and balanced.
Both would have there own unique special spell or spells.

lumberjacking for attended players has pretty much been killed, as they did mining.
I think the ideas sound like fun, maybe they'll sell us a booster to make up for what they've done

Not that I'm trying to shoot down your ideas, Pinco, I think they're good. However, that said, just danged well bring back static trees for colored wood instead of the constant wood types changing and you'll see 10 times or more of the lumberjacks out there chopping. So what if there are a few scripters, they're easy to figure out, just page on em.
And changing the subject, you are to be commended and applauded greatly for your work on the EC. I love what you've done. There are only two reasons at present that I still use the CC, 1. It overheats my poor comp and 2. I'm an avid fisherman and I need a macro I can make that will allow me to fish on a moving boat while I'm traveling between fishing monger quest turn-ins, relative target, etc.

While interesting it sounds like all it would do is make warriors that have lumberjacking more able to get the rare woods than actual lumberjacks, I don't personally enjoy it but there are pure crafter/gatherer players out there, and they've already been shafted almost as much as us thieves with past changes (resource randomization, which benefits scripters over players by far, and now the fact that you can get more rare wood/ore/leather off a single pirate ship than could take you hours to gather) and I'd hate to see them further marginalized, especially since, again, like us, UO is the first and the LAST MMO to cater to our playstyles.

I didn't speak about bring back static trees :p

remember that this will not remove the actual lumberjack style, just add a new way to obtain extra wood by killing the monsters (like mining with gargoyle pickaxe)

At first I was going to say "Hell no! I don't want my poor crafter to get attacked all the time!" But then I read it again and realized that a "Corrupted Axe" is basically the lumberjack equivalent of a Gargoyle Pickaxe; meaning I would only get attacked by stuff if I actually used the item.

So in conclusion: I like it.

If a horse turns red, you kill it, will you get karma loss? or do they become insane & out of the rules?
If they're red, they'll attack anybody (blue) around, making you become gray if the player is killed?
Can these spawns be guard-whacked? and what happens to the wood that's dropped if whacked?

Idea for lumberjacking: Occasionally upon hitting a tree a squirrel may jump out and attack your ankles. And if you're a male character, will go for your 'nuts'.
