Looking for Dread Horn Advice for a Tamer

I'm taking the next step in the game for me and trying my hand at peerless. I thought I'd start with Dread Horn, because I've done it before, and I know the area quite well. However I am getting butchered. I can't seem to prevent the changelings and named changelings from switching targets to me, and when that happens, I die.

I can heal through changeling attacks, but not through paragon or the named changeling attacks. I can cast invisibility, but it seems that no matter how far I am away, as soon as I try to heal my pet the changelings pounce on me. My dragon can take a lot of punishment, and does very well, I just can't seem to keep myself alive, and I do need to occasionally heal my dragon.

Any suggestions for getting the keys would be greatfully received, and for the battle with Dread Horn.

***On a side note the problems I have been having have actually made me happy. They have shown me that a tamer with a greater dragon, even an extremely good one, is far from invincible, and that is a good thing in my opinion.***

I've never tried it myself, but isn't there something where if you stand on the same tile as your pet you can't be targetted by critters? I seem to recall reading about people doing something to that effect.

[/ QUOTE ]This is true. I'm not entirely sure it works for changelings aswell, since they are actively switching targets where more other creatures just target whatever is closest to them, but it's certainly worth a try. Also, with casting creatures like changelings having Resisting Spells in your template greatly improves your survivability.

I'll have to try that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Whatever his stats, however cool he looks... don't hit the tame macro...

That's all I can offer, only stood on the mainland and stuck my tongue out at the git thus far hehe.

I so need to try peerless....

I'm having fun. Haven't died this often in a long time. Been trying Bedlam as well, although I've never tried Grizzle. Just getting in there is a big deal for me.

[/ QUOTE ]That's the right attitude to get started with the peerless

I clearly remember the first time a friend talked me into doing the Shimmering Effusion, which was also my first peerless ever. It started off easy with the Crystal Deamons, then we got to the Hydra/Serpent room... I never died that much in one place and one day! My main contribution to the hunt that day was a truckload of insurance-gold but the Shimmering Effusion rewarded me with a Captured Essence anyway

As for your introduction to peerless: I would recommend getting started with Melissande and Travesty, both collecting the keys and killing the boss are fairly easy for those. The Grizzle isn't very hard either but I just really don't like fighting the boss course his special slows down my casting and thus the fight. So that's why I didn't recommend him :p
Just as a guideline here's how I'd rank the peerless dungeons. For keys (easy to hard): Melissande, Grizzle, Travesty, Paroxysmus, Dreadhorn, Shimmering. For bosses: Grizzle, Melissande, Dreadhorn, Paxorysmus, Travesty, Shimmering.

Have fun!

I'd probably disagree on the order of some of those, but it really depends on your group, and your individual play styles. For example, you don't want someone with bard skills to come with you into Trav, isn't the best idea. Main question I have right now is whether or not it is possible to tank a super dragon on Paroxysmus.

Anyway, to the OP, for Dreadhorn keys, a Super Dragon is not the best pet. A Cu is going to be better for mounted speed, and ability to "conceal" pet. Get the Briar, invis in the gnaw cave, get the fang, then run through the desert until you get to the fairie statute drop zone. From here, lure the monsters you need to kill one by one and kill them separately at the bottom section, where no traps will spring and where you will have area to move around. If you have to use a super dragon, best bet is to use area peace to get yourself around, or just log in and out using a stealth tamer maybe lol
. oh, and dont forget the blighted cotton ;P.

I think one of my mistakes was not making a beeline for the bottom area.

Ok, I made it to the island. I know how to get all the keys and what to do with them. I learnt the hard way that the essence of wind keys disappear if you log out.

However, when I got to the island, I died very quickly. Basically the first time Dread Horn pulled me in, I died. I'm guessing pre-casting arch cure is a big help, I'll remember to do that next time. Any other suggestions on how to keep him from targeting you once you have been poisoned?

I tried standing way off from Dread Horn, but that didn't work, would I be smarter to go and stand on top of my dragon?

you might try a one handed mage wep (wands?) so you can use GCure potions...risky because itll raise your chance to get hit, but maybe it would save you some time from being poisoned. when doing paroxysmus, as long as you stand one tile away (one between you), it won't teleport you in, but I'm not sure about the DH. the problem with DH is it old-school discords your stats (sorta), does that annoying wild fire spell to kill off vetting, and does the tele poison chomp. as suggested before, magic resist will help on the odd chance it magic curses you as well. it's pretty nasty to be under the "emo" effect and a magic curse if you have 0 magic resist (something like -38 str or more)

spellweaving has Gift of Life for self rez, which is handy, and maybe you could use that and some cure pots...i dont know, it isn't easy ;P

I'd have to check, but I'd assume all you would need (without regard to spells) would be 70 phys and 70 poison...for the melee hits. after that, purple petals and cure pots might be useful additions any template could use. unless your tamer has 120 wrestling, it is always risky to disarm, which is why i suggested the mage wep, which, would reduce your defense a bit overall during the teleports, but, would require no switch. i guess the worst part would be the reduction in gheal damage due to wand :/ but you might be able to balance that with specialized jewelry, lol...very specialized, +15 magery, 3/1 w/ dci ;D.

however, an ecru ring w/ 50% ep might also be interesting to try...

anyway, good job

Are you trying DH solo or with some buddies?

Me and a couple of guildies have DH and Meli down-pat - at least one sw-tamer, with a (min) lvl 3 focus obtained beforehand, and a combination of at least one cu, and at least one rune beetle for the armour corrupt.

With DH, we always seemed to fall into a routine of standing back (not too far, he seems to like to tele you in when you sneak too far away, heh) and mage healing. And sitting around the altar beforehand spamming "Has everyone got my bars??!???111!!!" hehehe. Alternate between casting GHeal and Cures, if you get a good tank in there and a good collection of healers/curers, you don't really need to vet that much. Can't wait to try the big daddy draggies in there, good luck with it and keep having fun!

I was trying to do it solo, but today I did the next best thing. Two of us did it with dragons, Sarafin and I. She has an incredible dragon, the best combined hits and resists I have seen period. I still like my dragon better because it has higher skills, but her dragon is amazing. Her dragon also has over 650 str.

We each only died once, and I almost lost my dragon a couple of times. It certainly wasn't an easy fight - gotta be lightning fast with that arch cure. I think I could do it solo, but it would take a long time. As it was it took a long time with the two of us. Not sure how long but I'd say at least half an hour only considering the fight with Dread Horn. If you take into account the time it took us to get the keys, it was well over an hour.

The only thing that went wrong was I forgot to drop party before the Horn died.
