No cheating and looking it up in your blue jackets manual

1#How do you find the source of a leak on ship?
whats the prescribed method?

Now I had this question on a test and I was a land Warfare Guy my whole military duty....sounds like you were a ship guy.

I had to look this up, it got my curiosity up so bad....you know how many hundreds of miles of pipe are on a ship....its mind blowing....no cheating

Hmm... A small leak is one thing. All important piping is monitored. A drop in pressure would indicate a leak. A fuel leak would be bad. Those are easy to find as it is closely monitored. If it is a high pressure steam leak, just look for the dead guys.

Water leak... no big deal. Pump the bilges.

I would likely fail on that question. The leaks I was most trained to deal with were ruptures... those are easy to find.

no kidding....it said in the blue jackets manual to grab paper towels and proceed from one end to the other, wraping it, so when the paper towel got to wet from the place where the leak was at, it would leak straight down from that fixed point.....I was like WTF are u kidding me.....LOL

Im parraphrasing of course....not sure on exact wording

i am surprised that when they have a leak, they don't just buy a new boat. Now that would be REAL Navy for ya.

Oh I got another one but Iv only heard it once so I'l do my best to retell it.

(this is apparently a true story made possible by a radar malfunction)

On board the USS Lincoln, the helmsman notifies the captain there is a unknown vessel on a course running it straight into the carrier battle group.

The captain calls the vessel on the radio. " USS lincoln to unknown ship, you are on a intercept course, recommend you adjust your course 14 degrees north"

Unknown ship, " Come again captain? recommend YOU adjust YOUR course 14 degrees south"

Captain " This is the USS Lincoln, a United states Aircraft Carrier on offical business, adjust course 14 degrees NORTH"

Unknown ship, " Captain I don't think were seeing eye to eye here, your gonna' have to adjust YOUR course 14 south"

Captain " THIS IS A CARRIER BATTLEGROUP CONSISTING OF 7 MILITARY VESSLES, YOU WILL ADJUST YOUR COURSE 14, THATS ONE-FOUR DEGREES NORTH!"

Unknown ship " THIS!....IS!.....a....lighthouse...its your call..."

Ya, I'm pretty sure that was a joke.. I was Army, and I recall plenty of jokes about every branch, from every direction. We're all on the same team.. :)

Aye.

But even from a Airforce stand point, I got respect for the combat branches.

Which used to mean the army and marines but is quickly changing to mean every branch. With the under maning in the Army, you see alot of their taskings go to the Airforce, something were not too happy about.
