Karma loss from being nice to NPC's??

Ok so I was buying gems and other things from the jeweler in Ter Mur and I had a small stack of gold in my bag, so I figured with a new character I'd be able to get the gold out of my pack and gain a little Karma. well When I dropped the gold on the NPC i get the message "you have lost a little Karma". guess it doesn't pay to be kind to strange gargoyles.

Well if i had more than 1000 gold (I think that's what a new character starts with these days) on Baja I'd do it, but as I currently have no characters, gold, or items on Baja.........
