There seems to be a lot of confusion over "East Coast", "West Coast" and "Central" shards.

People are still making references to "Central" shards, even grouping Lake Austin in with Great Lakes, Lake Superior & Chessy, as if that condition still exists (if it ever did).

I can see references going back to the AoS Release of Lake Austin being a West Coast shard, as far back as the opening of LA to non-new accounts.

And, were the Central shards ever actually in Austin, as many commonly believe, or were they in Chicago, as Brandon Williams stated in January 2004? - And where are they now?

That would indeed be an "Interesting bit of Trivia"

Currently however ... it is quite easy to use a route trace locator
(such as: www.geobytes.com/TraceRouteLocator.htm , http://visualroute.visualware.com/ , http://ip-trace-route.qarchive.org/ ...)
to verify actual physical cluster locations ... (No more "central" which afaik were test, LA, maybe 1 or two others .. in Austin ... pre-cali move)

Still ... interesting bit of Trivia ... extra points for "turn-on dates" (Like Siege's bump and jump ... early on )

My "trivia response" ... would be the faint memory assertion ... that Baja was among the earliest ... maybe even the "Beta" site that every vet claims to have been on ... errr ... in? ... uhhhh part of?
*shrugs*

Make it so! Jeremy !

I'm not sure if that helps or not. Don't tell specific locations, but does list east/west.
It tells the current situation, but is a 2005 edit of a Third Dawn info file, meaning the original version predated Lake Austin & Sakura (the last two shards made pre-AoS, with Origin coming about around the time of Samurai Empire) by a long time.

I went through a lot of the update and server outage notes, and most prior to 2003 referred to Chesapeake, Great Lakes and Lake Superior as the Central Server.

Also, Lake Austin has the address of central-aw1.owo.com
Pacific (the first older shard to get AoS - LA was new account only when opened, and it and Pacific were used as AoS guinea pigs) is central-aw5
Origin is central-aw6

Chessy, GL & LS are not showing their addresses to UOTrace, but appears to be going through the DC, then Ashburn, VA (outside DC), Sprintlink servers (note that my ISP takes me to Chicago, then through Akron & DC, to get to a place only about 400 miles away as the crow flies in almost the opposite direction from Chicago - and back TOWARDS ME from DC - then back SE again, towards the southern DC suburbs, if the East Coast servers are in Fairfax with the Devs).

note that Mugen is central-jp7, Sakura central-jp8

I get the feeling that people for years have been seeing the "central" part of the tag and assuming it referred to the Central server, when it probably part of EVERY server address (or was at some point), with the part of the server name AFTER the dash indicating the actual location (aw(#) = American West (#), jp(#) Japanese (#), etc.)

As far as actual physical server locations, it is my understanding that they have always located all the servers in the same place, and the difference in location was the route over the internet that was taken to get to them. If you do a trace-route to each internet name for each server (my home server is lakesuperior.owo.com) you will see the difference in the number of hops it takes to get to each server. Optimally, the one you will have the best connection on is the one with the fewest "hops" to get there.

For example: My tracert to Lake superior (I live in Ft. Worth) and i am leaving out the first four hops that show my public address info.

As you can see, 24 hops, and yes, arirang is laggy for me. But note the last hop on both. Same public network (first two octets or public IP are the same.) OSI is routing me from my house, to dallas, to japan, then back to California to the UO server farm.

Hope this clears up alot. :)

Shamus,

Thats not exactly right, all the shard servers are not in the same physical location. If this was true that all were in Cali I should ping the west coast servers the same as I do the Japan servers because I live in Japan. I ping my home shard Baja at about 200ms and the Japan shards at 35ms. I think that last hop you are assuming is the host server is actually the login server. If you have ever noticed when several servers are having login problems it is usually all shards.

Why exactly would you want to know where the servers are located?.....planning something? We Americans are pretty proud of our country and don't appreciate foreigners comming in and trying to take control. That is why we hide the locations our important locations...like area 51, Groom Lake NV. oh, and by the way, where are Stratics servers located..........

The servers are currently at a few locations - one in Europe, one on the US East Coast, one US West, and either one or two in Asia. At one point I do believe the "Central" shards were located in Austin, but they were moved a number of years ago and now all the US shards are either on the East or West coasts

I stand corrected...:blushing:

But there must be some routing voodoo...

[geek]
How are you able to have servers with public addresses on the same subnet when servers are in such disparate locations?
