Is the castle outdated/impractical and should be discontinued?

People I know want castles for storage. They usually have another location, as well. If we had a smaller castle, for those who do not like to customize, and allow 18x18 to have greater storage, like a castle, that would be great!
We also have so much space that does not allow any housing. If we had a few special spots added, that would help crowded areas. I would like to see them add a second house to each account. Possibly a small plot. Say if you have 18x18 or less you may also have one in the 7x7 to 10x10 range.

You can easily get an 18x18 within I believe 238 lockdowns of a castle if you buy High Seas plus the housing upgrade, since everybody already starts with the 20% boost.

Now “New Maginica” is set… and the epic greed breaks house sale records left and right… and we wait for the next round of SPRING CLEANING… I thought I would pose a question based on some chatter going on right now.

Is the classic castle design an outdated and impractical house design?

In other words… should the design be taken off the house placement tool?

Atlantic shard still has some house placement issues for younger players as well as those returning from a few years back. Castles never seam to fall… super rich players buy up entire areas and then place a brand new castle taking up houses that 4 or more people could have had. At least on Atlantic… there doesn’t seam to be any shortage of house area, yet 99% of it is packed and only the small or mid-size spot can be open to a player in need of cheap housing. Some areas… you get clusters of castles. Massive obstacles void of any personality.

As far as I see it… castles are a huge waist of space. I really love the artwork and designs of classic UO. Still, we are talking about a massive building with huge amounts of un-used space. Castles and keeps… both have these unused grass areas inside the 4 walls of the house. If you wish to have a public house with limited access for visitors so you can have private workspace? Forget it! You can't. Not like the classic full tower that has 4 internal doors.

Now… if you could customize a castle… NOW you would be talking!!! I love our custom house system. I see this aspect of our game as one of the top 10 best improvements of the game since EA took over. Luna, #1 worst. Never the less… owning a town of 6 houses, all tricked out all cute and functional… I could so easily place a castle in the spot. Trouble is… my town is for the community, not just for myself. If I could customize the castle… I could easily rebuild the town almost exactly to what it looks like right now.

Disclaimer: I’m not suggesting our staff actually do this. This is only a topic for discussion. If I had a vote, it would be to discontinue castles. 18x18 big boxes are bad enough without the lands being littered with castle size boxes for lack of creativity from some players.

So… what does our community think?

I bought a freshly placed Castle on Atlantic 15 months or something ago. The guy had been trying to sell it at the bank for 3 days and no one wanted it. It was only 800m. These days people have so much money that's nothing. There were several castles for sale on Ice the last time I went through there for around 1b.

I always wanted a castle. I placed a castle once 3 or 4 times, but I lost it to warps during that housing boom. Now, that sucked. My family loves this thing. We seriously love it. It particularly rocks with the house teleporters.

There are people that are really excellent at placing houses, so there will always be new castles available. If you want one, save your money & you'll eventually get one. If you don't want one, that's good too, since there won't ever be all that many new ones.

Castles are a win-win for people that play seriously whether you like them or don't like them.

Basement Yes I want that too. As for the 18x18 coming close you do realize I have a castle with 60% added storage. You can't come NEAR that with any 18x18.
