Is it possible to recycle for wood ?

While making exceptional archery weapons, also normal archery weapons (non exceptional) get crafted.

Is it possible to recycle those not wanted into wood ? How ?

I tried using various tools but none seems to work. The smithy's hammer does have the smelt option but it only works for metal items to return ingots.

What about wood items to return wood ?
Thanks.

Never in nearly 18 years... You do play this game, right?

Bone, granite, scale and glass also don't recycle. Yes Dot, one has to wonder. When the game is played one can go on chat for a better rib tickling from the PVP crowd on questions.

I used to just sell the bows to NPC archers and use the gold to buy more wood. I'm not sure how well that's going to work today, but at the time I had a healthy profit after training :)

Ahhh, the good ole days! I did that too during training, selling the bows to buy more wood.

I remember when I started making GM bows and selling them on a vendor, when you had to use Arms Lore or Item ID to determine quality of the equipment. You couldn't make "deadly" heavy X-bows at that time even with GM skill, but you could buy them from NPC archers. I made a brisk business having the only vendor selling deadly heavy X-bows on the shard, when they were really just NPC weapons. :D

And then AOS came along with all the fancy numbers and ruined my business.

When strength was so hard to raise in the early days, I started a character on lumberjacking. I had no intention of fletching, but I started carving bows as something to do with the wood. It was a pretty good moneymaker before I discovered tailoring, and it served the main purpose of gaining strength. It was too slow to lead a pack animal (magery skill to gate was a ways off), and you couldn't chop while mounted (you'd get kindling), so I was always running between Britain and the guard-zone forests.

NPCs would offer 34 gold for my best bows, though that was a measure of durability, not damage. Exceptional was roughly equal to Might. Then there were those pre-patch heavies, two-hit killers if someone had lower str or poor armor.

I wonder how many people started this game with a crafter? I started with a miner. Also, to gain strength in the early days I would stand in a fire field while a guildie would heal.

I started as a miner/blacksmith/scribe.

Started by mining west of Brit. Would take my ingots into town to sell.
Then I started working up Blacksmithing as well.
Finally, I used the money saved up from Mining and Blacksmithing to become a GM Scribe.
I would be interested to know how many scrolls, spell books, ect I sold those early years. I remember being able to sell resurrection and gate scrolls at Brit bank... fond memories.

I always wondered why it was not recyclable.... since well I know a few people IRL who recycle wood all the time.... and resell it.

At least you have no loss on creation, as with a stupid smelting fault of ore.
But the same cannot be said for leather ...

I can kinda see why bows aren't easy to recycle - after all it's not a big wide bit of wood you could do much with. Kindling and shafts are about all you'd likely end up with ;) Though if it's supple enough it could maybe turn into some kind of material for weaving baskets or fencing I guess.

Larger wood items should at least be recyclable into smaller ones though, as they would in RL.

I've never tried smelting ore in RL but I'm pretty sure you would lose some weight simply through chemical and heat removing some impurities and other junk. I haven't tried it though so I can't say for sure.

Armor is not always big pieces of material. Rows of a thin hard material or layers of thin material. There was armor made from paper in asain history.

When it comes right down to it. Bone is something that needs to be recycled. Biggest pain in the ass to collect and fill BODs. Will complain more on wood, granite and scale once they are part of a BOD system with new/updated rewards. Rise of the tink/fletch/carp BOD system for earning runics in a proper way. The fletch quest system at least is ranged and supports a training of the skill 0-100.

I started playing UO with inscription. I still remember standing on the stairs of the Artists' Guild behind Britain's bank selling the scrolls to other players who needed them to fill up their magery spellbooks.
And I also remember the thieves taking advantage of that.... while people were buying the scrolls from me, around them there was like a cloud of other characters snooping them and stealing from them, some got caught, some got away with it.... I was generally left alone by thieves, though...

I even made a donation towards their Guild Tower, who knows what happened of it....

Good ol' times, lot of fun.........

I know that this is an old post that I'm replying to but after seeing this memory of making money it also reminds me of how I made money back in 1998 when I started playing UO it was killing cows and making money off of the hides in Delucia lol and that brings back some simple times before going on to bigger things as I thought but I think that the best times were when I had nothing and logging out in the Inn,killing cows and chopping wood was the best times and oh I almost forgot "looking out for PK's when I went out of town.

Yeah I made money with my first character doing tinkering (tinker/mage), had to mine too then make daggers and sell them to NPC. For a short period of time used to item id stuff from the NPC to find good items. Found some nice maces doing that. Eventually dropped mining and tinkering and took up swords and archery then dropped magery LOL too much lag to play a mage. At least with swords or archery you would autodefend if lagging

Salvage bags are great for recycling in case you missed that too. But yea, still doesn't work with wood. But that would have been what I would have tried for a clue that it wasn't possible. Or the crafting tool itself.
