Invasion - going on too long?

same here. Alas, there is a fine line between keeping it long enough for everyone to participate in it, and keeping it too long that everyone gets bored of it. *myself included* however, i still will take others there to see what its like etc.

This event needs to end. It's been exactly the same as every other event which has caused the need for the spring cleaning in the first place.

Events could benefit from in game progression that you either can't complete in one day or only exists for one day. Not waiting weeks for them to put the next part in. Waiting for the next installment just results in weeks of feeling like the first part was pointless.

They could also benefit from having quests related to the event so that people who don't know the story (which after this amount of time is probably a lot of people) still feel like theres an aim. The quests could vary in difficulty to cater for people with little time to play & people with lots of time. Instead it's just farm the items, the people with more time get more because they have more time to farm, the people who don't get to play much get less the only thing their equal on is the worthlessness of the items.

Events were better when they excluded people (people who weren't there for them). I remember doing the headless horseman haloween event, 6-7 new items from it. If you got nothing you didn't feel like you had wasted weeks of your time you felt that you had taken part in something not everyone else had. If they re did that with the current standard everyone would have farmed a dozen suits after the first hour and be throwing their doubles on the floor after a week.

Theres been a lot more events that I've missed completely but I'd rather miss some and feel like the ones I did get to were worthwhile than be at all of them and feel they were all pointless.

again, snap out of it lol...this really just started to move forward, you or i have no idea whats to come from this...but you want it over..if people really want it over..go back to what you would normally do ...i mean seriously, people need to give there heads a shake...if they play out an event fast and people miss it, you will see nothing but threads apon threads of people complaining that they had things to do and missed it.unfair and do it over and so on...they let it run abit long enough so everyone had more then a serious chance to involve themselves before things move forward..and people **** n moan about it being to long...bang your head against the wall or shake it..either way wake up and enjoy it or go back to the zombie routine of what you were doing before anything started to happen

I may be wrong but what I think has hurt the invasion on LS is the underground spawn problem, which they say they are fixing.

I don't think it's gone on "too long," other invasions were FAR longer.

There's always a drop-off in participation. This one was just exacerbated by an issue which they say they are fixing.

Is the event still going on? I haven't been to Cove or Nujel'm for a long time. Aint' worth a visit, if you are no tamer.

I wish a big city like Luna would be swarming with hordes of monsters, and not only monsters high-end characters with uber equipment or greater dragons can kill. But who cares about Vanguards in Cove? Especially when fighting them is the same thing over and over again? Back in 2001 when Britannia's cities were invaded by monsters, it was totally different. The whole city was full of creatures for quite some time. Creatures like Lizardmen, Undead or Gazers, with eventual boss monsters showing up. Fighting there was fun, even to medium fighters.

But then again, tamers and artifakt-seeking item collectors would probably complain.

"this really just started to move forward"

Has it? What shard are you on? I'm on Atlantic and we've had weeks of the rift, farming items that have mods no one would ever use. Now we have vanguards weeks of tamers squablling over their latest addition while non tamers farm more shields/swords that no one would ever use.

Spring cleaning - get rid of your useless items. During an event that generates more useless items.

"you will see nothing but threads apon threads of people complaining that they had things to do and missed it.unfair and do it over and so on"

Tough, maybe they should have a mass unbunching of panties and see how their luck is next time around. It's catering to the complainers thats got us with houses full of crap that needs 'spring cleaning' in the first place.

"zombie routine"

You see normal play as zombie routine but weeks of farming items with no properties as entertaining?

"they let it run abit long enough so everyone had more then a serious chance to involve themselves before things move forward"

Thats one way of putting it, the other is the patch got delayed. (as it always does)

Checked over and over for days and never saw any spawn in Cove on Origin. FINALLY I saw a tiny spawn and 5-6 players from a guild (not one I wish to ever try and fight with), looked boring and I logged. Orc/savage invasion was FUN and ophidians as well. At least the Magincia invasion had rubble. Aside from boosting my bank account in alternate Glow and getting hiding to GM, this event is over for me.

well obviously you only play the game for the items..some people actually play the game and fight the invasion...because its an invasion..hell i give away half the swords and sheilds...on my shard there has been progress..the rift opened up in moonglow, we fought..cove was mysteriously invaded..we fought..and now its moved onto a few other cities and were fighting and trying to figure out where there coming from and why..alot of people dont care about the items, and some do..and that is when you get the situations where certain peple will come around, kill a bit, leave because they have there items..then once the battle is over and done, they hear..oh something else happend ( like the rift pillars)...well i wasnt notified of that and it should be done over..pfft.
as for being a tamer..you dont need to be a tamer for this event..i push the invasion back and kill off the vanguards alone by taking my time..and im swords/chiv.
weeks of weeks of farming items, is one way of looking at it
weeks and weeks of fighting an invasion and doing something out of the normal routine ( can only get so many doom arties, peerless ingredz/items)..pvp is a different story
so yes..i do consider the endless normal play with no new material or things to do....zombie mode

Here's the deal neal, you addicts get bored too fast. Shut the pc off and go outside for a spell.

What happens is, players, who can no longer think, to play on their own, post effortlessly on stratics that the devs are giving them nothing to do.
(something seriously wrong with that)

So what happens, they are given a new toy, the child shuts up for awhile and then , either breaks new toy or is bored with new toy.....child wants another toy.

This event just started, and needs to go one for a long time. A majority of us have lives.....we work and if lucky, can log on maybe for an hour a day.
We don't have the mindless habit of vegitating for hours on end staring at a screen. ( I pity people like that)

So bottom line, no it has not gone on long enough, and if you're friends are bored, use a keyword we forget after childhood....IMAGINATION.

The development team is small and trying to focus on a lot of things at once. They have this turn-in which has gone from a few old event items to now encompass much more. Then there is the faction element which seems to be going to play a big role. Then there is a secret focus group which may be pointing out big flaws in their plan and they need to rework some stuff. Then there are the house decay changes and we're still wondering why houses have stopped decaying.

Sunsword canned Scenarios for a reason. He plainly stated it sucked up too much of the developer's time.

I don't think it's gone on too long, I like long events. It's just not as interesting to me as the other events were. If people are enjoying it, that's great. The latest publish info looks good and recent hires encouraging. Meanwhile, I am taking a break aside from throwing stuff on my vendors and enjoying GTA4. Sometimes I forget we have other games besides those on a PC. :)

I love the invasion so far, like clock work every two hours Cove gets hit, my favor place to fight the Vanguard.

My 2nd favor place is NJ, and I go there right after the spawning at Cove is finished. 3rd would have to be SH, but with the Vanguard in the ground little can be done there to kill off the spawning minions. Papua I have not been back to since the last two second death.

The few times I been to Delucia since the invasion I have not seen anything spawning. Still I wonder if there was a spawning it would be like Papua and avoided. Since they did say Delucia would be hit on the News, I quit taking my crafters there and would go to other cities for my bod needs.

The problem isnt that it's going on to long, it's that it's gone on to long without Dev feed back as to WTF is going on. I asked a VGC what they are doing there but they don't speak english....
The Devs [as usuall] start an event and tell a portion of the story and it putters out . . . it's puttering out and we have no word whats up, why it's moving or anything else. I've ben there pushing it back to the point it's gone in cove and . . . It just respawns. Thier is nothing we can do really but fight a never ending spawn with no clue as to what why and how. maybe if ya'll added some details now that Everyone has killed the VGC, added the possibility to run back the spawn from cities or anything really. As it is this is just a new spawn with no word as whats up and that does get borring.

"Orc/savage invasion was FUN "

Yeah, they used to be able to pull off a fun event adding simple things like that. Though it was a different game back then.

"well obviously you only play the game for the items"

No I don't. It doesn't take long to figure out any new abilities added to event monsters, that novelty wears off really quickly. If killing lots of spawn actually advanced something or determined what the next round would be then there would at least be a purpose but once you've killed everything in there how is it any different from despise? You can kill that spawn as many times as you like it affects nothing and it changes nothing it just spawns again and again until they patch otherwise.

"as for being a tamer..you dont need to be a tamer for this event..i push the invasion back and kill off the vanguards alone by taking my time..and im swords/chiv."

I didn't say you did. You're not pushing anything back, in two hours time it will spawn again and two hours after that it will spawn again. There is no challenge in killing the same spawn over and over.

When they did the repond genereals etc invasion in brit we got a statue telling us how well we did.

This morning there was a nice fight against the invaders in Cove on LS.

The way it's being handled is justifiable from an RP perspective. This is the Vanguard, it's an advance force. They are probing and testing us, keeping us off-balance.

There are all kinds of different game mechanics to use for invasions or similar events. All of them have their drawbacks, all of them have their virtues. All of them will engender complaints. None of them are perfect even on their OWN terms, let alone able to please everyone at once.

My own verdict on how this has been handled is mixed, but leaning strongly to positive. Honestly, my biggest issue is the underground spawn problem, because it prevents us from ever defeating a wave in some cities.

Lets not rush this invasion out the door too fast!

I've got a hundred Threads of Fate and Life, that the use has not surfaced yet.

Realily don't want to hold on to them for years, like the other invasion items, waiting for some promised use.

I like the sentiment, and I agree somewhat. Let the invaders attack, en masse, and if they are beaten back, they are beaten back. Just saying "here's some new monsters to kill" and setting a few spawn points that spawn endlessly no matter whether they are beaten or not, is not an impressive event. We used to have Seers that did that on weekends, spur of the moment :0
I get bored as well, when I can't see a result from fighting, I'd rather they set it like a champ, beat the wave, it gets stronger and more, until finally no one is left except the Generals, or whatever ya calling them for this event, beat them and its done, lose to em, lost the area...

You mean an archer or a warrior or even a mage that does 2x the damage of my dog (dragons suck on Vanguards) can't get higher on the looting rights to get the shield than I can. I am so sick of people saying everything is for tamers because they don't understand how to play their warriors and mages. True, maybe it would be harder for an archer or warrior to solo a vanguard and it would probably be even harder for a mage to do so, but this is in no way a tamer only event.

I wish a big city like Luna would be swarming with hordes of monsters, and not only monsters high-end characters with uber equipment or greater dragons can kill. But who cares about Vanguards in Cove? Especially when fighting them is the same thing over and over again?
I don't think the event belongs in Luna. These monsters are killable by a group of mages or a group of warriors or a group of archers. They can be soloed by a tamer, but it does take work.

Back in 2001 when Britannia's cities were invaded by monsters, it was totally different. The whole city was full of creatures for quite some time. Creatures like Lizardmen, Undead or Gazers, with eventual boss monsters showing up. Fighting there was fun, even to medium fighters.
Lots has changed in 7 years...a large ammount of the changes have come to a point where pixels dominate MMORPGs. While that was a fun event there was a lack of pretty pixels.

But then again, tamers and artifakt-seeking item collectors would probably complain.
I'm a tamer. I really don't see where it is an issue. If you can't do more damage than a tamer on a dexxer, archer, or mage then learn to play your dexer, archer, or mage. Looting rights are based off of damage and a good archer does 2x times the damage of a tamer against a mob if they are templated correctly and have the right items. The same can be said about a good archer and a good mage.

Man I would love to see an alter in the middle of Luna bank and the whole town crowned in spawn and when you actually got to the champ it would drop some nice items.

I still remember how long the Brit invasion dragged on and others. This one is going pretty quickly I think.

Surprisingly, despite more lag, I've had no problems doing other things in UO. Several folks got bored and we all went on Mel's and a Doom run. We just visit the event to mix things up a bit.

Just because there's an event going on I don't let it affect my gameplay anymore. If anything some spawns are not being monopolized and give us other players a chance to have some fun.

I was just thinking waaaay back in UO history when Trinsic was invaded, they set the standard for UO invasion/spawn plots. And what is different between then and now apart from game mechanics?

Back then, the spawns were controls by real people. Keeonean, Juo'nar and all the rest of the evil things back then were played by real people. If someone got out of hand in an attack, the real intelligence could take care of it. If someone (and this happened to me in an event, but not Trinsic) kept provoking balrons on the main bad guy, the real intelligence could delete the balron THEN kill the player who is making the battle too easy.

Back then, I was thrilled to death when the people running the Trinsic invasion spent 3 days attacking a player run establishment on Napa. It wasn't part of the plot, but it certainly spiced up my life.

Now, everything is run by AI. As soon as somebody figures out the pattern, which doesn't take long among thousands of players, there isn't anything fresh or new. Some people wind up bored by that.

So the question I pose is this: What would it take to get enough staff in order to man a few attacks in person?

Or what would it take to give a berserker demon enough AI to teleport?
So that they weren't getting killed thru a fence. Or as my stealther has observed, standing at the fence, attacking a wisp/fallen warrior/fetid on the other side of the fence, for 15-20 mins? Only to have the wisp, etc, FINALLY tele over to get killed, at which time the zerker goes back to target another one across the fence!!
*shakes head*

I love it too, when they stand in the corner of a building, looking thru the wall at another mob, for the afternoon...

I haven't even been able to make myself log in to try it. So every two hours a city gets a spawn of the typical billion-HP event monsters, which you massacre for weeks on end to get crappy swords and stuff that you'll never actually use. But might be able to turn in for house decoration. Pass.

You need a billion point dragon. Mine tears through comptrollers, although I have heard contrary. I got one shield it says chaos on it. It looks nice, but I forget stats. Maybe it will explode or something? You don't want to miss that.

Tamers Only event??? Really, then hell, you mean I have been using the wrong chara since it started . Wow, thank you for enlightening me. Man I been using my disco bard & summoning 2 earthies & killing Vanguards in less then 2 to 3 mins alone. You mean there is an easier way:confused:.
The only thing I use my tamer there for is getting horses for the few that don't have any yet. Using a tamer there to me was :lame:. We each have our own way of playing the game, each likes to use a different chara for different types of events. Thats just game play.

I tried to fight the Vanguards 2 or 3 times, died within 10 seconds. I think you need certain skills to be successful. In my opinion a melee fighter with Chivalry and Bushido would work, an archer with Chivalry, and of course the tamer. All other templates will have no chance. Ah well, maybe provocation could work too, I never tried this. (I have a high-level Swords/Bushido fighter - he also died pretty fast.) Well, I go with fencing and poisoning (poison being useless in the event anyway) and I won't change my template just to get a shield and a sword from Vanguards. Hawkeye Pike is the character I play 95% of the time, and I don't want to play another character just because of this event.

If events are designed to favor only certain character templates, it is hardly astonishing that not many players will come. And no, my template is not weak. Skills and equipment are pretty much maxed out. They just are no good for the Shadow Invasion.

This is no complaint. I don't have to be there for the event. It would have been nice, but hey - there are other nice things to do in Britannia. Like mugging landlubbers! Har har!

Depends on what you are looking for. Nothing is easier than killing vanguard with a disco-tamer and a dog. But if you wanna kill it having a fight, go on a mage - and its especially nice if you have chars left who need resistance to train or healing, they gain fast there :p

Please tell me what you hope to "figure out" by robotically killing the same spawn over and over again. Tell me what deep mysteries of a nuanced and complex plot you've managed to ferret out thus far.

LOL.

I took my necro/samurai out to Cove last night. Nobody else was there. It was the same giant pile of speedcasting garbage monsters that always pass for AI in UO anymore. I couldn't really do any serious damage to the one Vanguard Controller that I could find, and it kept running around randomly disappearing anyway.

Yeah, let me play with THAT for a month or two. Whoo, excitement.

Imagination is the poor excuse of empty games. I don't need to pay 17$/month if I only have my imagination to play with.
As I think UO has more to offer than a lot of games, I don't like when people are telling to use the imagination. It gives a pathetic picture of the game.

I'm afraid I gave up. Every time I get anywhere near a vanguard controller I end up dead and most of the time I've no idea what happened. My life bar doesn't go down slowly, one minute I'm vetting my pet and the next I'm dead.

I'm probably incompetent, I've retreated to my more usual haunts where I know what I'm doing.
