Interesting article about RP

I found the article about the role playing interviews very interesting. If I may step out of character, something I rarely do when it comes to anything UO, but UO is an MMORPG, and it's always fascinated me that 99% of the players don't know what the RPG part stands for. I am not saying that everyone who plays UO has to role play, but why play a RPG if you don't like role playing. And to take it a step further, why feel distain for those who do?

BTW, I don't know what happened to the forums, but it appears that my account is gone and I had to reregister. So instead registering my previous name, which was RhiannonOfLuna, I shortened it to Rhiannon since that wasn't taken.

A while back the forums went down a while back, when they created the temp we all needed to re-register, myself included. I see your point with MMORPG's but such is life.

When I spoke to people the disdain came from those who were ill treated by roleplayers, primarily two guilds in particular, but I will not name names. The idea was to show a different perspective.

I think the genre and the meaning of the words "Role Play" has changed a lot since the D&D days, especially with regards to video games. A MMORPG is mostly about the leveling, gaining of new skills, getting gear, and PvP. Basically building up your online persona, which is where the role play part comes in.

I have seen RP'ers in a few games and they are kind of lame. I'm not going to go so far as to say all RP'ers are lame, but the ones I have seen are.

They get exremely angry if you talk to them out of character, or if you dont follow their RP rules. A lot of RP'ing seems to revolve around fake male-female relationships, and even cybering. Which is another big reason why people do not like RP'ers (Nobody wants to see cybering, or lovey dovey affection all the time).

Again, I know that these things may be attributed to a small part of the population. I'm just giving you some insight into what the general public thinks.

Some of the best in game experiences have been had roleplaying. In the old days I had a character very much like Gabrielle off Xena, and now I have 2 or 3 characters with personae.

I played on Atlantic for about 18 months (from Feb 2006) and found no roleplaying whatsoever on the shard. This, and moreso lag, made me move a character to Europa and start up new characters (or the same ones duplicated). There is a very good RP community there and it's a really good set up IMHO.

However, in the RP zones, people who are not RPers there are generally ignored (this isn't always good though) rather than abused, as are people who wear magic items unless they go into RP mode, be it speech, looks or character. In other words there seems to be a different world... but it's what people make out of it. My own guild (me only really to keep the name going) was not a RP guild but the 2 characters I had in it went into RP mode when they were in RP zones. Outside the RP zones, it doesn't seem to matter so much.

I've recativated my account for a month to see old friends etc, and have actually *shock, horror* seen some books advertising RP guilds. This is good, and I hope it grows, especially if there are alliances of RP guilds where consentual PvP is allowed, or events/scenarios are set up etc.

This game has a lot of potential for RPing, which is not there in others like LOTRO (which I really do like as a game). There are players who cheat, those who just want to kill things, those who want to make gold, and these guys often don't actually understand why RPers can play the game without these motives.

Just my two pennies worth...
