[Mining] Ingots from monsters

I thought I read that some high level monsters drop 900 iron ingots. Some kind of golem maybe? I can’t remember where I read it. Is it just not true??

is the best source of ingots simply to mine or buy ?

That's a new one on me but, even after 22 years, there is a lot I don't know. If you are on Sonoma, holler for Thailog or Maldar and I will give you a bunch of iron ingots.

Orc brutes and golems drop some 10ish iron ingots. Not worth it imo, let alone that the respawn timers are meh.

Not sure about the 900 ingot loot mob. Maybe you read it somewhere related to one of the countless free shards, each of which has its own ruleset.

hunting elementals in Shame is a lot more fun.

Shadow Ele's and above give 25 ore (of their color) which turns into 50 ingots. Orc Brutes also drop 25 shadow ore (again 50 ingots).

900 ingots seems like a lot. One possibility could be that the monster (whatever it was) killed a miner (mining bot) and looted the ingots off their corpse. Someone then killed the monster later and found those ingots on the corpse. Other than that I do not know of anything that would naturally drop almost 1k ingots.

Also, golems and a couple other mechanical mobs give 11-25 iron ingots.

you can also kill ant lions in the solen area.
if you don't want to fight anything else, you could always stay down in the 5th area.

This area is accessible by planting a green thorn in the sand.
It opens the entrance, but sometimes you can't see the hole.
so i plant my thorns at the north beach at magincia, where you can kinda tell where the tiles are.

Specifically:

Pirates have Iron, Dull Copper, Shadow Iron, Copper, Bronze and Gold ingots (and ore which comes in piles equivalent to 7 ingots).
Merchants have Agapite, Verite and Valorite.

I've seen as little as 50-150 of each type (pirate), as much as 600 of each type (merchant), on one ship.

So, if you're looking for the high-end ingots, you'll get far better return on time invested hunting down the Merchant Tokuno and Gargoyle ships.
If you're looking for the lesser metals, unless you're hunting with a team of people to make the pirate captains go down quicker, you're better off mining for it (especially since it's easy to get Prospector Tools and Gargoyle Pickaxes now).

The most efficient time/gold cost means of getting iron ingots, though, still has to be searching Ilshenar's 10 random Gypsy camp spawn sites. If you're the first person there and find an Iron Worker NPC, iron ingots are 8 per for the first 1000, going up from there (and they despawn after a few hours, before the camp respawns in a different spot, resetting the prices again). Though, people have been making that harder to do ever since I pointed that out a decade or more ago, as there's a lot more competition for finding those NPCs now (especially with everything metal being crafted from iron first for reforging).
