Imbuing is Pure Genius

I've been meaning to post this for some time, I think imbuing might be the best feature that I have seen added to UO, ever. Here are some reasons why:

- This first reason isn't necessarily great from a player's perspective, but it is fantastic from the developers' perspective. It institutes another arms race, and gives players the feeling that they must buy the SA expansion to keep up with everyone else. But it does this in a way that isn't game breaking, in my opinion. Players that don't have the expansion can still compete, but those that have it, and are advanced enough to take full advantage of the benefits of imbuing, will have an advantage.

Sales are a good thing. Sales keep Ultima Online alive.

- It is the best "clean up Brittannia" event I have ever seen, even better than those officially named "clean up" events. The size of the databases probably didn't shrink all that much after the release of SA, due to the new content, but I am betting that more items have disappeared from the servers as a result imbuing than have disappeared in any of the official "clean up" events. Not only that, but it is ongoing, it doesn't end.

- Imbuing is challenging, without being impossible, for just about any play style. The fact that the high end ingredients are hard to get, but can also be crafted. Simply brilliant.

- It has created a whole new market for high end crafters. There is a reason to be a blacksmith again, or a tailor. Beyond bods.

- And it is fantastic for new players and less advanced players as well. Low end imbued items are perfect for creating that 100%lrc suit for a new player.

- It is the best gold sink I have ever seen added to this game. At least I can't think of a better one. I very much doubt anything, other than those huge bannings that removed billions from the game, have removed more gold from the game than imbuing.

- The items won't wear out quickly, but they will wear out, creating an ongoing demand.

- People like me who hate waste, have to be thrilled with imbuing. Suddenly there is a reason to loot corpses dry. Oh the unadulterated joy!

- And most importantly, it is fun. It's just plain fun. Planning those perfect pieces for your suit, hunting down the ingredients. It's just plain old fun, and adds so much in terms of game play to UO.

I'm sure there were other reasons I had thought of that I have forgotten to mention in this post, but kudos to the developers for this addition to the game. It really is, pure genius.

Up until today`s patch I would have agreed with you. I have had so much fun with this skill after I finally got to make an undead slayer with SSI and HML. I realized then that the reason I didn`t really hunt much was because my characters weapons just plain sucked :)

Today however - I am actually quite mad. That doesn`t really happen so often.

There are 22 different mods that use relics as a base ingredient before you even start to think about the special ones you need for maxed mods.

Now I face the difficulty in getting one basic ingredient to continue to play with imbuing. I have used a few barbed, horned and one gold hammer this weekend in search for some special gear with a nice roll of the resists. Most of the result I placed in an unravel bag, because well - that`s how that RNG rolls.. Out of 60+ items I got 4 relics.

Previously I have been trying to hunt paragons for arties. My results there were 0. Currently I can steadily get Crushed Glass, a special ingredient more reliably than I can one of the three basic resources.

I think that is really way over the top nerf-wise. It was a complimentary skill to runic-crafting. It was a way for the more casual player to supplement their equipment. With todays nerf - the dev team just undermined the whole system and the intended target.

The result will be that relic fragments once again will be placed on Luna vendors for 200K+ pr.

Yay...

I agree with the previous posts, along with being disappointed on the recent nerf on relics as it has only helped the 'power players' already with more relics than arties.

The imbue addition can have a wonderful balancing in the long run, hopefully bringing those group hunts and utilization of hunting with LUCK should luck be working as promoted.

Thank you for your efforts EA.

I kind of enjoy gambling with imbuing too....

Using up the resources to get a piece of armor where I want it or weapon where I want it and then rolling the enhancing RNG...

OMG...the feel of devastation when I break an item I put expensive resources into is deeply troubling but when you see that piece of armor turn green or red or that bow turn yellow with a success....oh my.....that outweighs a few failures.

I don't gamble in real life so this is my gambling addiction.

Of course now that relic fragments aren't craftable as easily as they were I need to be even more careful.

I wasn't even aware that anything had changed today. What was changed? Relic fragments are harder to come by?

i guess the point of relic frags was so that everyone could imbue cool stuff, but it would take lots of work, money, etc. to get the best. and since relic frags now only come from arties, i think this will be accomplished.

'course.. uhm.. you sure need a lot of them. which is why i always keep things at 13% or 7, or whatever is just below the max for needing a frag. that doesn't always help though, when you need a frag just to get out the door but alas...

yes, relic frags will now be much more expensive. too bad i didn't stockpile any of 'em.

Yay...
I've got 50 million in stuff to make relics sitting here & I don't care a bit. Woohoo!!! It was great while it lasted. Thank God I only sold 200 of them. One thing is for sure though, nothing that hard to make could possibly be a cheat.

It is people with money, but you can be a person with money too. It's easy in this game to get rich. Simplest principle in the world, you play immediately when something comes out. Sell ALL the good stuff you get. Buy it back when its over. I don't know why, but a lot of the rich people here don't even play uo really. So, they buy whatever is new for 5 times what its worth. It makes you wonder how they got rich to begin with.

NEVER, buy anything the first week it comes out unless you have to have it to get more of it.

...

I agree with all the OP's statements AND the issues with the recent change.

And as posted in the other thread, the problems involved are that Frags are needed for a good number of mods at ANY intensity level and consume on fail whereas the "rare" ingredients have been made EASIER to get and do NOT consume on fail.

This throws the concept completely out of whack.

haha this is so true. first week of SA i saw someone sell a candlewood torch for 5mil gold. you heard me, 5mil gold. he went on about how it was so rare and hard to get. he sold it though. 8)
