I'm really starting to think HP is overrated on these new dragons

A while back I posted a dragon I tamed over a week ago. I've since named the dragon... "tough" was just a placeholder name... his name is now "Torak" and he's now trained in the 110 range of wrestling and tactics. Resist is just low 100's and Anatomy is 99 something.

Here's an old screenshot.

I'm noticing this dragon is getting tremendously strong as his skills get closer to their caps. I'm also noticing that firebreathing is infrequent at best, so I think you get more bang for your buck by focusing on getting a dragon with high wrestling, tactics and strength to increase damage. Basically what I'm trying to say is that if I were a betting man, my money is on resists/wrestling over HP for defense and STR, Tactics and wrestling over HP for damage output on a greater dragon.

This dragon will go up to 120+ in wrestling and tactics and has 50 pts shy of max str. He's starting to hit pretty hard and his resists make him not take a whole lot of damage (6 pts off max possible resists). 119.9 magery theoretically would make him heal himself better, but honestly that hasn't come into play yet. His health doesn't get that low lol

I started training this dragon on shadow iron elementals, but that was getting boring. Now I'm training him on greater dragons, so I get to lore each one and eventually get good ones. I haven't timed it yet, but I think this dragon + disco/tamer template is actually farming dragons faster than I was on my provoke tamer.

Don't get me wrong... I wish this dragon had 1000 hp. I just think he'd gain more from 130+ wrestling, 125+ tactics and 700 STR. I'm happily impressed with his performance so far... If I ever get a dragon with those 3 attributes I mentioned and resists like this one already has, I will probably fall off my chair.

I thought it would be a good idea to share this viewpoint so others can check it out. Last night a guildmate asked me to get him a dragon with 900+ hp and said he didn't care about any of the other stats. I gave him a 330+ total resist dragon with crazy stats and 900+ hp, but he would have actually probably been happier with a 1000 hp dragon that takes damage at a rate higher than he can heal.

These things take a while to train and I didn't want people to finally get their dragon trained up only to discover that its 70's phys/fire resist makes it a high maintenance pet.

Well... I guess I kinda wanted to show off Torak some more too... he's such a monster! lol

Ok

I decided it would be more concise to show the stats using my custom animal lore gump. It's such a pain cut/pasting all those AL pages into a single image.

I don't actually use my AL gump for farming dragons yet. I'm afraid I'd have trouble killing the new dragons safely if I did that... the annoying flying animation lags me a bit.

I see that the skills are going past 100 on most. I know on all other pets it will gain to 100 except if it was tamed and remained over 100.

But how is your going over 100 when after tamed it was below? Is it new for the super dragons? Appear so.

I have one just have not trained at all.

i feel like I am posting way too much in this forum, but, I have to inquire, where might I find that KR gump for animal lore? I saw it referenced by name, earlier, but I do not recall now...thanks:)

I haven't confirmed exactly how skill caps work on the new dragons yet. I recently learned (I haven't confirmed this yet) that reptalons can be trained up to whatever skill they were at before you tamed them. This is unique because hiryu can only be trained up to 90% of whatever their skill was before you tamed them.

The way I assumed it works is that the skill cap on the new dragons would be 90% of whatever each GM+ skill was before you tamed them, but now I'm wondering if you can train them all the way up to whatever their skill was before you tamed them.

The jury is still out on that one. My dragon is only in the 110's range. He will be at 90% of what his skills were pre-tame when he gets just a touch over 120 in wrestling and tactics. If he gets up to 121 in either skill, I will know that you can train them at least to whatever their skill was pre-tame. I am wondering if it would even be possible to train them up to 145 wrestling and 140 tactics... who knows.

Is his resist going up through normal training? Mine doesn't seem to be rising that much, and i have him beating on Dragons in destard.

On most (except new dragons not foresure) pets resist will never raise only skills.

On the 1st post from sarphus and the most resent the resist stayed the same.

The dragons skills are raising.

That's right... elemental/physical resists are static... You have to find a dragon that has these resists at a level that's acceptable to you.

Magic resist skill is trainable up to whatever your pet's magic resist cap is. I think the cap on the magic resist skill will be 90% of whatever the wild creature's skill was before you tamed it. I will know at some point when my critter reaches his caps.

I trained magic resist by having my drag beat on a shadow ele while I mana drained him. A guildmate also manadrained my drag. I am finding that my drag gains magic resist pretty fast when I farm greater dragons with him, so I've been doing that instead. I'd rather train my dragon while farming dragons than train him off an elemental.

Sarphus,

I commend you for going to "old school" taming. Going out and fighting with your new pet prior to bonding.

Yours even has nice resist. I tend to tame on resist as primary and stats secondary.

That is a truly amazing dragon. Six below max for total resists is nothing short of miraculous. I'm busy training my dragon on a shadow elemental as I post this. It's boring, but he is coming along nicely. I've been going at it for around eight hours straight. I'm hoping to fully train him before I go to bed tonight because I'm am just about certain my bard won't be able to discord him once this training session is over.

I'm about as certain as I can be that these dragons will train up to 90% of their pre-tame skills and no higher, but time will tell, I think I've already have one skill, resisting spells fully trained now, and I'm pretty sure that once the discord wears off I will see that he is at 90% of his pre-tame skill level.

I'm pretty sure that we can only go up to 90% of the pre-tame value.

My first dragon was 132.8 wres, 117.2 tact, 134.4 resist, and 136.1 magery pre-tame.

He's capped out on: 119.6 (I know, so close) wres, 105.5 tact, and 122.5 magery. I've hoped to try to get up to 120 wres but it just won't happen...I'd pay for those .4 points if I had to. He capped out on tactics when wres was 110.1, so I'm pretty sure it isn't moving.

Still sitting at 104.0 on the resist...not too worried about this one.

Hope this helps...

I've been taking my unbonded dragon to Travesty and Mel, and he's been pretty awesome there.

I believe the dragon bonded. He's on Origin so he had his first dragons well ahead of the rest of us. He was scolding me for training my dragon before it bonded, so I don't think he'd be doing the same...

But still, he's doing his training the old school way.

I can confirm that with all the skills except wrestling they will train up to 90% of their pre-tame level, or 100, whichever is higher. I haven't fully trained wrestling on my dragon yet, but I expect that when I do I will find it trains up to 90% of it's pre-tame level. It took me approximately 11 hours of discord training on an elemental to fully train all the skills except wrestling. Wrestling seems to be gaining quite slowly so we will see how long it takes to train that fully.

niiiceee. my guildmate suggests trying to spawn a paragon shadow ele for higher end skills, which is possible through spawning one in ilsh. i've never seen it done, yet.

I'll be able to fully train this dragon (124 wrestling) on normal shadow elementals. You just selectively discord to keep skills close. I just spawned an elemental with only 75 wrestling, but when I discorded the dragon it brought is his skills down to around 90 which is plenty close enough to train wrestling. He's gaining nicely.

The elemental will also do some catching up so all in all training on normal shadow elementals works just fine. I don't know about paragons, but I'd be worried about the amount of damage one of those could do when I discord my dragon. I have a bad habit of browsing the web or working on coding while I train, so I'm not always right on top of the condition my dragon is in...

yes, without discord, I think it might be good to switch once 120 (being a normal ele gets to 100 max in wres). w/ discord, you should be good the whole run, I believe
. +/- 20 seems to work alright

What is the best way to tame a super dragon? Do you have to disco first or can you peace-tame? My Taming is 120, Lore 110, Peace 116, Music 115 - No Disco as of yet. I tried peacing one of these beasts last night and it didn't stay peaced for too long before eating me - several times. When I angered it, the dragon broke peace very quickly. Should I beat it down a bit? Take a strength potion? Any suggestions?

There are a few threads in this forum that talk about taming greater dragons. This is one of them. The search feature is your friend.
