While playing UO over the years, I've come to the conclusion that warrior is the class I prefer, and that's the class I'll always play.

However, I do have a GM Necro/Mage whom I built up over the years. From time to time I log on with her and try things from the mage side.

But to be honest, the thing I hate about the mage is the lack of hitting power. This could of course be because I play the mage poorly -- I usually just use ebolt, EV and wither. I am so used to hitting the heal macro to take care of things I have a lag using the GH macro.

Last night a friggin Black Mage had me on the ropes. A damn black mage -- something my main would drop with one hit.

Anyhoo... point being... if you were in my +2 Poison Snakeskin Boots, would you recommend slugging it out a few more times and get used to the mage, or admit to myself that I prefer playing the warrior class?

I'd develop excessively bitter feelings about it, blame Bob, and maybe a GM or two, and move on.

But that's just me.

It's likely the delayed Turn In's fault actually.

That and WarHammer Online.

Oh...and Darkfall...and KR.

It's not you.

Of course you're right.

Which, in turn makes me bitter.

And, then, logically, makes me want to learn to play a mage well.

Naw...what am I saying!!??

hey Caspian you are not the only one who prefers a warrior type char over the mage its completely a play style thing and each person has there favorite char that they use

oddly when i am done with my current template i will prob swap fencing for archery and see how that goes just for a change but then again i love toe to toe fighting it drives people up the wall and me as well when they say i cant go toe to toe with Krysan in hythloth but with good players around doing some good cross healing i can last for quite some time

It's different with the mage over a dexer that's for sure. LMC, FC/FCR, MR are mages' best friends. Sure you got the right gear? You probably do... what am I saying?

Getting hit with a casters spells always throws ya into a hump. I love the lightening spell myself. .. fast powerful, can cast it all day and never run out of mana. Interupts their ability to get a successful cast on ya. Fireball sounds kinda first grade compared to a whack with a blade, but for low fire resist casters it really messes with em. Use Invisibility.. break its lock on you.

Guess the point is, not all spells work as well in all pvm situations. Experiement.

lord yalp, LMC, FC/FCR, MR are also some fighters best friends as well its just a matter of if you want to spend the time to get the gold to get that uber full 70 resist suit with those and god knows what other uber mods you can find

Maybe you could ease into things a bit by soulstoning something (necromancy and spirit speak, perhaps) and giving your mage music and peacemaking on a temporary basis. You would then have a chance to see which mage spells are most effective while not being clobbered too much.

Hey in the beauty of UO why choose?

120 magery
100 eval
100 med
90 Macing
100 tactic
60 Chiv

Dang if I dont forget the other skill

Anyway.
Boomstick
A nice 50% lighting mace when i want it

PvM is easy.

ah resist
100 resist
the other 30 is mixed in somewhere.

Ranged attacks
mage bow with spell channeling.

While I have no suggestions, I can say that mages perform superbly at PvM and PvP.

So yeah, it's probably you.

Just like it's me the few times I've played around with a mage.

I played a swords dexxer exclusively for the first 6 years of the game. I was unwilling to even try using a mage at all.

I eventually switched and now use a mage along with an archer and other dexxers these days.

But it does take time to learn how to play a mage properly and they are basically the opposite of dexxers the fact that you cannot charge in and try to throw down damage outright. But once you learn to avoid damage and hit with spells as fast as possible it becomes easier.

You also have to know what spells are going to be effective and what spells are not. You have buffs you can use to help boost damage and defense and you need to learn to use those also.

Much of it also comes down to your suit also. Max casting speeds lrc lots of lmc and mana regen all while trying to maintain at least decent resistances. So just getting your suit worked in is half the battle with a mage.

Once you get your mage built with a suit skills and so on things become a whole lot easier to deal with.

Just keep at it and eventually you will be as comfortable playing a mage as you are a dexxer.

Learn to play the mage/necro better my friend!

Your not even using 20% of its capabilities if all you do is wither and ebolt.

Try corpse skin and mindblast.
Try strangle/explo/pain spike.
Heck, get a mage wep and try gettin in close. Use magic arrow and fireball to interrupt em while ya wail away!

I love my dexxer, aint nothing like gettin in close and smellin the fresh blood on your face, but sometimes........just sometimes mind you.....a good dose of scrappers backed, inscription included, 120 flamestrike/120 pain spike aimed in the general direction of some poor souled mob gives ya the "OMG that was cool" willies!!!!

Now get back in there and get to casting!!

Prince.. what shard do you play? You can come cozy up to ole Yalpers on Baja anytime and we can walk ya through some training.. ...:gee:

gulp.. yep.. training.. for such a vet as yerself! Don't think of it like a dirty newbie word.. saddle on up to some legendary mage on yer shard and learn. In no time you'll be making a name for yerself as a first rate mage.. putting fear into the hearts of all whose path you cross.

Yalpers!
