They say writing is cathartic.
I started my UO journey on Catskills over 12 years ago. At that time, I was newly married with no kids. Today, I'm on wife #2 and have two beautiful children and a lot more gray hair. When I think back on all that has happened between now and then it's not just real life that I have fond memories of.
UO, and in particular Catskills, has been a HUGE part of my life. Maybe that's why it's so hard to say goodbye to the shard where I placed my first house (a small house on the northernmost tip of Skara in Felucca), got pk'd for the first time, GM'd my first mage, made my first Lord (back when that MEANT something), and made (and lost) so many friends.
Somewhere along the way, I lost some of the love I had for UO. I think it started with Trammel, insurance, and the revamp of the skills system that made skills mean less and items mean more. It's all become a little too "Monty Hall" for me. So, I stopped playing UO religiously and became more of a casual player. Then, about a year ago I decided I could do without UO. I was ready to quit. Then, someone showed me Siege. I've not been back to Catskills to play since.
This is not mean to be a UO prodo-shard bashing post or a "Siege is the best" post either. It's merely me saying goodbye to a shard that has been a major part of who I am for nearly 1/3 of my life. It's me saying goodbye to an old friend while desperately trying to hold on to that UO feeling by saying hello to a new one.
Farewell to those I've adventured with both present and past. I wish you all the best in game and out. Once my houses packed with memories have been sold down, I find it hard to believe the characters I've put so much time and effort into will ever roam the lands of Catskills again.
