I'm don't have anything against tamers, but...

My argument is not that the monster bars are too difficult to pull.

I am saying that all these pets take away from the events themselves. Having Greater Dragons all over your screen is not fun. Pleasing tamers while making every other player suffer is not right.

I would argue that most people play tamers / pet summoners at events is simply because other templates are not viable.

All the tamers keep asking why should they be excluded because of their playstyle with a GD. Okay fine. Now let me ask this as a melee Paladin why should my playstyle be excluded because I can not see the boss monsters for all of the GDs? Either way someone ends up a second class citizen. I don't think there is anyway to make the events fair to everyone. One of the many reasons I don't bother with EM events.
A melee play style isn't viable because there isn't a melee template that can survive against most of those boss monsters.

They will take things like a crimson dragon or dark father or peerless and then spawn it as a paragon then reskin it.

Most EMs / Devs seem believe that how challenging an encounter is, is to be based off how many death robes you generate. The more players that die, the better.

So, people bring dragons- play archers- play throwing mystics.

Atlantic events are usually just overrun with a large number of people. While I am annoyed by all the "flappy" pets and toons in the way of mobs, it's atleast a sign that people still want to do these events regularly enough and actually show up.
People show up for an item drop.

Back when the EM program was started back up, there weren't more than 15-20 people at most events, until items started to be given out.

@MalagAste just noting this becuase i know you play EC. I dont play EC regularly so cant say off top of my head where it is, but theres an option to turn off character animation to solve the wing flapping issue. someone more familiar with the EC interface could say exactly where it is if youd like to use that option.
Can you really do that?

It only stops them from flapping but They still hover right over everything.... so turning off the flapping while ok (it really looks horrible like that).... doesn't really do much.

Dragon turtles were a nice idea (more tameables are a good thing!), but a terribly ineffectual response to the underlying problem that has been bitched about ad nauseum for years now.

The option to switch out (client side) GDs for a smaller mob graphic (think skree rather then reptalon, as they're tiny and mostly unobtrusive) is the best solution to this problem. The GDs are still represented, but no longer cover everything else. (only people with this checked would see them as skrees)

I'd also suggest the ability to toggle gargoyle flying as well. People with it turned on would just see them walking, and walking really fast when they flew.

This would solve multiple problems at events without forcing people through hoops to attain a smaller GD-equivalent pet through the poorly received egg lottery.

This. Literally this. Developers, just do this. Here it is. Heck make us both happy and add both a skree checkbox and a reptalon one. Or render them all as mongbats or something, I don't care about the specifics, just make it possible for me to see whats going on at events.

Heck make it possible for a tamer to always see their own dragon as a dragon, but other dragons as skrees or whatever. You know that would make their lives a lot easier.

In World of Warcraft, they address this same issue by having BOSSES appear huge and player pets are tiny. That way one can raid a boss and see what is being fought. Before you hate the EM though, try to imagine you are running that event. You have no control over who shows up or if they bring pets. They can only do so much with the tools they have available in the game. What can WE do as players to be more respectful to each other?

There will always be jerks, true but they should be the exception not the rule. Would be GREAT if they could just revisit the whole way players are rewarded for events. What if everyone who shows up to the EM Hall at the end got a Quest deed, double click the deed and you have a % chance of getting whatever reward/memento there was for the event or some gold, or maybe quest points you could save up to redeem an item? That would encourage randies, alts, multi-boxers, and rares collectors who only care about drops to sit in the damn EM Hall and not even go to the event and let the rest of us enjoy ourselves. [BCOLOR=rgb(204, 205, 205)];)[/BCOLOR] Or better yet, just put in a casino for those guys...and make events not about loot.

I attended the event on Atlantic last night and the screen was completely filled with Greater Dragons. It is even worse than I remember from years ago.

At one point they had monsters that would release tamed pets. Obviously this would not be acceptable in today's UO.

Instead what if a new monster ability was created to auto-stable pets? This seems like a pretty clean solution. It could be that the monster "magically teleports away beings of lesser intelect".

I know people are going to say it is unfair to exclude a play style. Well it is also unfair that all we see are Greater Dragons everywhere.

If the team really wants us to start using dragon turtles, how about just letting us trade a greater for a turtle with the same stats - for those of us refuse the new turtle farming system?
Dragon size has been an issue for over a decade. I never understood why they didn't just allow us some means to permanently polymorph our pets rather than try and add in smaller ones, which as has been clearly illustrated in this thread is not a great plan. Seems like a much easier solution.

I had the chance to switch to a dragon turtle...but it just looks silly.

I do like my dread mare....but she's not powerful enough.

Maybe we need some new powerful ponies.
And with ponies i mean actual ponies...and not ugly weird things like kirins and unicorns.

Everyone loves ponies ^_^

I remember the days that i went hunting with two mares.
But these days that's just not an option anymore.

There is sort of an underlying issue with Greater Dragons in that players will always use the most powerful creature available to them if there is no drawback. There is no point in using anything other than a Greater Dragon because they are the strongest.

I used to use a White Wyrm all the time. Haven't seen on of those in years and years. Players used to use Rune Beetles for their special ability to lower resistances of the target. You also saw people using Hell Hounds for the pack ability, two drakes for high DPS, etc. All this ended with the introduction of Greater Dragons.

Here's a possible idea. What if a new tame-able were made that was specifically geared towards events, and only events? So for example, we could say it was something the size of a bear or a cu-sidhe, spawned regularly in a few different places, and had a sizable damage bonus specifically against event mobs, however it wasn't quite as tanky as a greater dragon, requiring more effort to heal and keep alive. Solves a number of problems - smaller graphic, more damage for tamers, keeps tamers more engaged during an event, and offers tamers a choice with trade-offs: higher damage and lower tank, or higher tank and lower damage.

It would be cool if there were a greater diversity of specialty tame-ables for specific situations, but as JC said tamers will go for the strongest creature available and currently the greater dragon is the all-purpose king of the hill.

As did I. I even pvp'ed with a White Wyrm/Nightmare, killing one guy many years ago on Legends the last time I did (along with several kills on LS during spawn fighting.) The old pets are still useful, but everything uses a greater dragon for EVERYTHING. For EM events/Corgul/Scalis/anything with AoE? I'm not gonna use old pets - I tried that once on my very first Scalis and they got DESTROYED. I took a White Wyrm/Nightmare combo to Shadowguard on Atlantic once and a guy that was there told me to get my greater - I have done MANY SG runs with a Nightmare/Rune Beetle combo (at first I used a White Wyrm, but I found that a Rune Beetle works better) and everything goes smoothly.

For me, a greater's best suited as a tank. If you know how to play with "lesser" pets, you can easily compensate for their inability to take hits against certain high-end monsters.

of course in WoW we don't have huge dragons as pets.

Maybe the devs should look for alternate solutions to GD's...

Everybody's typing; nobody is reading.

The issue is blobbing. Yes, that's not an appealing sounding word and it exists in the vocabulary of only two sets of individuals: online game designers and Eve Online players. But, unattractive as it is, its meaning is intuitive. It's too many people in one place at the same time.

This is the problem. Not tamers, their pets, their sisters, their cousins or their aunts. This is why later day online games went with instancing except for Eve. Massively Multiplayer doesn't tend to work.

So, I ask again what I asked roughly the third post in: what tools do event designers and event managers have to mitigate blobbing? This requires a response from either an event designer or an event manager or some soul from the aptly acronymed entity BS.

Add a setting to swap the graphic out for Dragons to a drake or mini drake, like how uoassist lets you turn yourself into a skeleton. Shouldn't be that complicated.
some of the other posts suggested adding an option to the uo config file and it is an awesome idea. i would love to have an option to toggle the dragon size.

I suggest making fairy dragons tameable and -ever so slightly- better than greaters, then spawn them in a few extra places. Or even just a way for a tamer to convert their current greater into a fairy dragon--but there has to be an incentive, like being able to choose color or something, or people won't be inclined to bother. Problem solved. (And fairy dragons are cute!)

This particular event took place at Lord British's castle and Mages could not summon, nor could they do area affect spells. Meanwhile a tamer merely has to say "All Guard me" and they're golden. I couldn't get close to the boss at this event due to the "slasher effect" that seems to be reused over and over with these bosses. I too hate all of the greater dragons but after this last in guard protection event I'm considering joining the ranks of the tamers. Oh and since the 40 or so dragon turtle eggs that I've hatched aren't as good as my greater dragon... well you get the picture.

Surely mass carnage and confusion is how these things are meant to be?
In other games its always harder for a melee warrior to land blows than a ranged or hunter/tamer with a pet, and once a ton of players and pets are involved its next to impossible to know whats happening, I imagine this was true of large real life medieval battles also.
At least this was a tram rules event where a "target next enemy" key is only ever going to bring up the thing you need to be trying to kill, on Seige these events become even more complex to navigate.

I run a Melee/PALADIN. I can hold my own just fine! I do champs, peerless, and pvp on that character. I'm sorry but I think this mind set of Tamers, Archers and Mystics are the ONLY templates is :bs:. If the EMs actually had a creative imagination we'd have events that made use of all kinds of skills. Like the one where you needed forensic evaluation to solve the murder, or on Legends we had the Sea Dragon Series that made use of Taming, Bard, Herding, Fishing and skill with a boat.

They will take things like a crimson dragon or dark father or peerless and then spawn it as a paragon then reskin it.

Most EMs / Devs seem believe that how challenging an encounter is, is to be based off how many death robes you generate. The more players that die, the better.
This is why I say our EMs have ZERO imagination! I think our EMs should be required to OWN a set of AD&D books and have played AD&D with pen and paper ! That's right pen and paper as in OLD SCHOOL! I have some buddies that can eat your freakin' lunch when they DMed. Its just a reflection of this generation; if it don't go beep-boop, have surround sound and isn't in 1080p 3d forget-about-it!

Our kids don't even have imaginations anymore. I was in Walmart and I saw this display of Jedi light sabers that light up, make sounds when you crash them together and all kinds of crap. JEEZUS, when I was a little kid and Empire Strikes Back was the greatest thing since sliced bread, we played Jedi using broomsticks or a piece of tree limb. There was no light up sound making plastic light saber. We made sound effects with our little mouths and loved every minute of it!

So, people bring dragons- play archers- play throwing mystics.
NO! How about bring the character your comfortable playing. Last I checked we PAY for the honor of playing UO. So why should we be pigeon-holed to THREE STINKING TEMPLATES for events? Instead how about EMs use some imagination when making events?

If the pictures didn't make you believe how bad it is: check this out.
Yes this has been an example of a typical Atlantic event. But sadly the person running the event doesn't see there is a problem. Can't follow the story, can't see the characters involved, and yet its the same thing time after time. Makes you really wonder. Many of us stopped going to these awful events on Atlantic long ago. On Atlantic its really only for the drop collectors anymore to make some gold. I always had hoped the EM program would have been more about building community and uniting people rather than destroying it thru player frustration and economy imbalance

Weren't we supposed to have a balance pass or taming update in the recent past or near future?

Was the introduction of the turtle the whole of that effort?

Frankly I liked the "specials" of some of the older tames, it made strategy something important.

They serve to do that, LC, on some of the other shards, as you probably know. But even on Lake Austin there'd be that element we likely both....dislike. There were the endless streams of (young) tagged players and such. But I only own event items I earned and I never once logged onto all of my characters to click on the magic shinny of the moment to get another copy of it.

I'm not particularly obsessed with moral principle. My attitude was selfish. I wanted ONE item that would mean A LOT to me: something that could summon the entire struggle, right down to every damned save of a comrade and every comrade's save of me, and deliver that experience fresh and whole to my memory every time I looked at the event item. And, hey, it works :)

This means, of course, I have never sold an event item. Money is something you make when you're not playing an online game....as silly as that sounds.

Yet this is what every EM sets out to do. Yet again, and for the final time in this thread, I will ask: what tools do they have at their command? Are they able to construct events that limit blobbing? Can they place and conceal multiple objectives in a landscape as vast as, say, T2A, devise a scenario that places many groups, assembled in different locations, around the objectives? Can they place different breadcrumbs for each....we've certainly seen evidence of this.

Do we need these objectives to all fall back to a final battle location for an immense concluding conflagration? Or can we have multiple sagas of the battle told?

These mechanics have existed since before UO made its debut. Thus I can't help but wonder if our scenario designers and managers have the tools they need. These tools extended the life of one online game for nearly a decade. This is why I harp on it so....

In GW2 we dont have tamers but Rangers do have pets. Nothing huge like a greater dragon and they are normal size to our characters. Our Bosses are extremely huge though. Be nice if they could do a resize fix on GD's or make old pets have more power in PvM.

Now our dragons are well....a bit huge but they are our nemesis's
