What's happening? If possible could you explain what was going on when the dialog box appeared? What happened after it went away?

Well, after a system reboot, it's completely fine again, but immediately after patching, the patch screen would come up, I'd hit "OK," and then it would try to load the client and crash straight out.
But... it's fine now.
It must be a twilight zone day... the EC wouldn't patch for me or another friend, even after the reboot, but now it's patching just fine.
Le sigh.
