Ideas for making regular gems more easily attainable.

For those who would rather gather gems than buy them the options are quite poor. Mining is very unproductive, and the gem bearing monsters that a person could kill with some speed only offer 2-3 gems. So heres some ideas...

Geode: Geodes can be dug up just like ML gems, and when cracked open with a pickaxe will yield 25-50 gems of one type. The graphic could be a recolored void orb or recolored coconut.

Crystal elementals: Have them spawn somewhere other than just randomly in the crystal fens, up their gem loot from 4 to 2-10.

Treasure chests/sos: Simply increase the amount found.

Chests in dungeons: Again, just increase the likelihood and amount a bit.

Any other ideas?

What about just Earth Elementals?

They are one-hit kills for someone with a slayer weapon and drop a couple hundred gold and a gem. Can also get a handful of virtue arties to sell for cheap and make a little extra if you like.

When I farmed the virtue artifacts for spring cleaning points I ended up with several hundred of each gem type.

PvM or mine for gems (or get a crapton of carts), sell the ones you're NOT using to buy the ones you ARE using.

Simple really.

Gem production is fine as it is IMO

I just came back recently so... why do we want gems?

I get craploads of gems doing the Matriarch quest. I make more selling the gems to the banker than I do on the monster gold sometimes. (or are these different gems?)

If you take up imbuing, you'll need the gems for that purpose.

Gem production is fine for production shards, because no one actually needs to gather them.

It's awful for Siege Perilous.
It'd be nice to have a theoretically functional gathering system, even if we can just buy them of vendors.

I like to gather my own gems as well . I just get a gargoyle slayer weapon and go to the valley below compassion (i believe its the one where the rat men spawn and has a gypsy camp to the west), it has 2 gargoyles that spawn rather quickly and average 3-4 gems plus gold. and as it is in Ilsh there is a chance for a marty.

I gather gems from Solen outside of Wind. Probably the best low end monster for gems in quantity.

It's not like I don't know how to get gems. I think I even mentioned the amounts you get from monsters. My point was that when you, like I do, make suits for people (not to mention my own needs), you need an ungodly amount of gems. For example, the standard "mage" suit I make requires a total of 121 gems (assuming I don't fail) PLUS whatever it takes to get the resists up to all 70's which is likely a good 40 more. I make 4-5 of these suits, and 4-5 of a "warrior" suit that require the same roughly, so for one restock thats... around 1000 gems, NOT counting resists every time I want to stock. Thats excluding any other regular imbuing I do. And since this is siege, these suits will need to be replaced.

If I have any desire to keep this up, I HAVE to buy the gems from npcs, which on siege are quite pricey, around 4k worth in gems per suit I wanna make, and which also involves working up the npc supply for hours.
(and they wont buy the ones I don't need to fund buying the ones I do)

Not to mention the fact that when you hunt for gems, and you need say...500 rubies... you're gonna have to pull in probably thousands of other gems since there are so many of them before you get what you need to make what you plan to make. Good to have the excess gems, bad because it could take literal days of gargoyle or solen or whatever camping to accomplish.

As for mining the gems up... it's even slower.

The point is, its not a huge deal to have to buy from npc, but now that gems are a commodity that people use in massive numbers, especially if they want to do any suit selling, the gem sources need an update, because right now they are being generated at the level they were when they had no use other than to sell to npcs, and recharge comm crystals.

haha i can't even begin to imagine what it's like to work imbuing on siege without buying gems 500 at a time from the jeweler. that has to suck.

It wasn't so bad. Since we have rot skill gain it took wayyyy less gems to 120 it. But I did have to work the gem selling npcs up to the hundreds multiple times. Which is a giant pain.

I would be happy with 4-5 times the gems from mining and 2 times the gems from monster drops, special give a bone to the Felucca facet

Felucca-only boss monster. Gigantic earth elemental. When killed, splits open and rains gems (like a gold-rain after a champion, but gems.)

It could even have lore. What are some greedy monsters? How about a race of ratman / orc / yomotsu miners who created massive golems to fill with their jewels - like giant, walking, self-defending bank vaults? Each one is full of jewels, and as you go back into the mines eventually you'll come to the really big, powerful ones which explode like clay pinatas and shower diamonds down on their adoring public.

The Ilshenar ratman mines would be the best place. It's a shame that there's no Felucca rules there, though. Perhaps it could be Siege-only. (...Ilshenar is Fel rules on Siege, right? I've never met another person there because of timezone, which is really the only way to find out.)

Yes all of siege is fel rules. The rat cave is a good idea... that place has gems all over it. Gem elementals?
