Idea: Garden add on

The basic idea is that rather than having to annoyingly stack up a hundred little bowl you have a graphical plot of garden with a interface to tend to your plants from one location. Let you sort by plants that need water, or the specific potions. Plants could be taken in and taken out (in the regular forms of plant bowl or grown plant) at any time.

Seems like it would be easier to run a farm, and crank out that flax, petals, etc.

Have it come in like 3 sizes, 50 (3x3), 75 (3x5), and 100 (3x7) lock down sized.

Seems like it would be neat thematically and functional. Probably a lot of work to make something unnecessary, but, it would be nice.

Sounds good to me. Gardening has it is, is way to much mousing. A few hundred plants is hard on the hands & wrists of older players.

A setup like the change to the crafting menus would be nice. We set a keg of Greater Poison, a keg of Greater Cure & a stack of water pitchers up beside the plant holder, open the plant holder window, and start it tending the plants.

Have it tend plants at about the speed the Alchemy craft window makes potions. I'd happily sit through the process and refill pitchers and replace kegs while it saves me from the irritation to my hand & arm.

For me its just an issue of I don't have the space in my house to grow the plants I want. As my house is pretty much decorated to every inch of it, so its hard to plop down 20-30 little pots around the place. Would be nice if it was all in one spot.

This would be amazing. I currently backpack-garden because I can't stand any of the layouts I've seen for locking down pots in the house (that, and I forget to log in for 2 days, and there go the plants!). A garden that held all our plants for us would be really useful! Then again, so would an easier way to mass-water and potion... my wrists are bad enough already :(

Seems that when making a gardening system you could add on easier functionality as well, such as water all, or like water tanks, or potion tanks, so you don't have to lug the stuff around in your pack to tend to plants.

I have an 18x18 set up for 100 plants on the third floor & 140 on the roof which I plant & harvest in groups of 20 (yes, I and my tree are no where near each other :) ). I have to spread out the plant tending over the day or not plan on using my right hand for much for a day or so.

I favor the games crafting play over combat. The hunting is pretty much for seeds & resources. Being able to do more plants for the sugar bags, cotton, & bark fragments in the next patch would be great. :)

Oh, and also, the garden plot would be considered to be dirt, so you wouldn't have to get bowls and dirt. But if you wanted to take one out you'd need a plant bowl handy.

bad idea..
We should be able to hire a gardener NPC, to take care of our plants.

Instead of an NPC I think something like the insurance option would be nice. For a price you could you could choose to automatcally tend a plant or tend it yourself as you wish. Get a bowl, fill it with dirt, seed it,have a secured container with water and potions and then set back until its ready to harvest. This will never happen though or any of the other ideas because it is way too much like unattended macroing.

I really just want a centralized place for it. I don't want any automation. People should still have to tend for the plants, seeing as tending for them is 4/5 of the effort involved in gardening.

I just want it to be centralized, and to remove some of the superfluous carting around of kegs and water and the tiering hassle of buying plant bowls, filling them with dirt, and watering them twice.

They did make the change to the crafting menus that automatically makes a set quantlty of things. Something which I consider worth a serious mountain of Brownie points. The crafting I so love in this game is a lot more fun than ache now.

The Devs may hear complaints from me still, but their only driven by sighs of annoyance, rather than irritation or anger. They got rid of so much of the crafting mousing & clicking. I'm seriously UO mellow now.

Thanks again Devs. :)

Nice idea, and a good update to a overly click-happy task. Could be a greenhouse graphic or some such.

I'd also like to see them tweak the liklyhood of plants getting bugs and such. Seems like it happens a bit too often.

Gads..., isn't this the truth. :)

I've often considered playing my characters as being paranoid concerning even touching Orange petals. I mean the plants they grow on must get a a dozen or more doses of Greater Poison in their 17 day growing period. Even brushing the plant has you tend them should drop your character dead on the spot with that much poison soaked into them.

<Valana carefully tends her garden.>

<Valana accidently brushes her arm against the Bright Orange Poppy Plant
as she reaches to pour water on the one past it and her arm withers and she turns a sickly shade of foul green as she collapses to the floor, the ghostly shadow above her goes OOOoooOOOooo#$#$%%!!.> <g>

I'm not in favor of this. Players should still do the work. However I like the idea of an npc gardener randomly spawning in a gypsy camp that spawns rare seeds. Example - a grass seed that gardeners can grow into a grass tile. Something along those lines. :)

I agree with Shelleybean. There is no need for an NPC to tend plants. What is the point of even having the system in place if that happens. I do like the idea of an NPC randomly spawning rare seeds though and it would be far more interesting than the tedious solen quest.

Considering irrigation is one of humanities oldest systems I suggest the Plant system is cumbersome beyond requirement, rather like the sentence you just read.

Allow the bowls to continue.

Make Dirt Patches available from Farmer vendors.

Enable Dirt Patches with all bowl features.

Allow new tinkerer menu option, "Irrigation system".

Hook a (x - potion) Keg up with a clock, some pipe (glass blowing pipes would work) and attach it to the dirt plot.

Lovely tended gardens (interacted with daily or every 3 days) would have a percentage change to do better.

Tended gardens (left to auto irrigate and checked weekly) would perform marginally with a standard outcome.

Untended Gardens (Planted, irrigated and left to grow) would be subject the present level of infestation and randon outcomes. Hey, sometimes Nature actually works better if left alone - go figure.

I nonimate you for EA's next President and CEO. I've seen more creative ideas coming from your direction than anywhere else lately.

They match my present salary and I would be there in a heartbeat. Heck I would even take a 10K reduction.

I`d love to see something like this.

Flora...vines are not clothing.

No matter how enticing the vision.

Say it aloud: "Vines are not clothing." :)

Maybe this could work on a system similar to aquariums? I wouldn't mind a small plot (example listed below) that could essentially hold several plants. I'm growing between 300-400 plants right now and it's taking over the whole house. :)

What if something this size held 100 plants? I'd have a lot more room in my house. :)

Completely agree with the idea for multiple reasons..

For players that grow and dont have huge houses - it would be ideal instead of plants spread out over an entire floor - or the stacks that you can sometimes miss a plant it's ideal.

As well as players like me who grow mainly for specific holiday decor and dyes [also decor sets to sell on vendors] - I'm not the best grower so the sort idea would be great for me. I tend to miss a plant or two sometimes then need to spend a day or two nursing it back to health, if I don't miss it AGAIN.

Wouldn't have come up with this idea on my own, I don't know if it will ever get added, But all the same... good job coming up with the concept
