Regardless of what it is called or it's function, there were a lot of us that were not sure that the CAPTCHA was actually officially sent from Stratics. So we did not use it fearing to some degree mild great that our own computers maybe were getting a peculiar popup that was hacking US and our own computers or trying to do so. Caution ruled. . proving some humans are just a bit more protective or old fashioned in that we will NOT click on nor fill out just anything popping up onto our computers while we are trying to read our daily dose of Stratics.
So I sent *in game* books to 2 moderators into their in game mailboxes whom I knew I could ask...if said popup was actually FROM Stratics or not. And if it is np.. & if not, then I would rather not click on anything until sure it IS 'officially sent' from Stratics.
I seem to have no issues with Stratics today, no IP blocking etc. and I still have not proved I am...human cuz I didnt do the popup yesterday.
Oh well. I am human and OLD set in me ways to protect MY Computer too, and not clicky on strange popups even if they are internet captcha thingies sent by whomevers ??? !! I would have to know WHOM sent it first before clickin on it...if folks with bad attitudes can hack the US GOVT systems ...well Ima not trusting any popups till I know whom sent em first and if safe to DO so !

I just got it and it was no popup but a full display page with an email to george if there were questions. mebbe they've changed things ...

I also went to in game chat on two shards asking...is said pop up really from Stratics ? And sent in game books to 2 stratics moderators askin same question.
It was peculiar my so called survey with folks in in game chat, with a sort of 50 50 result. 50% automatically clicked and filled out said CAPTCHA and 50% were afraid as hell to do so, thinking if this is from Stratics fine if not though...do I want my own computer violated ? maybe never get back in game or onto forums again till I end up having to fix up my own system from some hacker attacker popup sent us from whom knows where. Ya have to be cautious even if something looks like it is OK, I mean even nowadays some crabby mooded folks even hack into the President of USA's, Blackberry !~
Maybe if we had gotten said CAPCHAs from Stratics before...some of us not be so ParaNoId to get that. But as some would say...better safe than sorry.
I know I am human figured just WAIT no matter how long it takes and Stratics will work it out as they always DO sooner or later and I be able to read these forums again ... like I can today and I still have not proven, that I am HUMAN ! lol
Till I have my morning cuppa coffee, I am not sure I AM HUMAN nor awake enough to even ask myself if I am human, let alone some alien stranger pop up asking me that question, anyhows ! lol

But seriously, my guess is you pissed off a hacker somehow, either by banning a Stratics account, or they are cheaters that are blaming Stratics for banned game accounts because of the anti-cheat discussion that has taken place on Stratics.
And the new whitelist system is going to be a pita for people with dynamic ip's provided by large commercial service providers. I understand why it was done, and hopefully it does the trick, but it's a shame that as usual, innocent people will pay the price in annoyance for the sociopaths of this world...
I'm not totally willing to believe it's a coincidence that this started up when the headline news was the DDoS attacks on the wikileaks site. I suspect someone copy-catted the idea to hit us.
I thought the ddos attacks on Stratics started before the Wikileaks **** hit the fan.

Yesterday I definately proved I was human. So today I've been scampering along the threads here and there today for quite a while. I click on 'New Posts' and immediately the gump comes up again and I must prove I am human. Drats, they got me! lol ;p I type in the words and answer I get is 'you are already human, continue on' (your IP is already unblocked). My guildy has tried for some time now, and he is proving over and over he is not human. My suspicions are now validated!! lol ;p

For some strange reason today, i did the i am human test around 15 times and it wouldnt register that i was human....

I asked Stephen (thesimkin) about this. He and George worked on it today and said if you were having issues with repetitive requests it should be resolved now. You may have to clear your cache first but please let us know if it's still an issue.
We really appreciate everyone's patience as we keep the site up and running.

The Captcha isn't to prevent the DDOS, it's to allow people who's IPs were accidentally blocked to unblock themselves.

I don't mind having to unblock myself...that is if it would work. I tried something like 6 times double checking the codes each time before submitting to be told each time they couldn't unblock me.
In the end I had to submit a help thing via the little ? to which I got no response but then a few hours later when I tried to login again and again had to say if I was human or not it worked.....but it is a tad frustrating that it doesn't seem to work 100% of the time.

Sure, there are problems with the current system, but it's still an improvement on no one at all being able to access. Far from perfect, but kinks will get ironed out, and it'll get back to normal soon enough.

Problem is that, due to the media attention Wikileaks got. Many kids got hold of the XerXeS attack tool. Which is simple to use and bugger to stop. It can be pointed at any site the attacker chooses and all he has to do is start it running and sit back and watch the carnage unfold... It only takes one Kido to run this tool and he can bring down a small site easy. 200-300 of them can bring down the big sites like Visa, master card, PayPal etc.

Ok...I have to say the blocking is getting a bit frustrating, I've been blocked like 5 times now, once in between reading pages of a post. My ip only refreshes every few weeks (and as a matter of fact, I've had the same one for months), and this is a very small town, so I HIGHLY doubt there's anyone else in town who knows about stratics OR UO. I can't possibly be generating more than a few requests an hour to the servers, so whatever it's deciding blocks on is pretty screwy.
The only thing I can think of is that I use my browser bookmarks to browse to the forums I read, instead of going to the main forums page and hunting through the hundreds there to find the ones I care about. It seems that every time I've browsed to a forum from a bookmark I was blocked shortly after.

And a crowd the size of OT could take down a site like Stratics?

I didn't mind taking the two seconds but taking that two seconds repeatedly and repeatedly having it tell me I am wrong when I know I am 100% right and that it will not unblock my IP and then to have it randomly work the next time no issue just proves it has issues. If it re-blocks me again as others are reporting that just adds to frustration levels.
So by all means put security in place but all we ask is to make sure it works correctly and that it doesnt become an added chore or source of frustration.
For some odd reason that wouldn't surprise me.
Somehow i get the feeling that this "DDoS" is homemade by the owners. Currently it looks like iam getting looped when using stratics. Meaning the page is calling itself over and over. The statusbar is showing some "getting data/waiting for data from xxx" a couple times from drifferent folders/subdomains. Then its idle for a couple seconds and then it starts again with the loading data loop ...

Stephen said they did identify a problem last night that could cause this and believe it is fixed now but anyone who is experiencing problems should clear their browser cache.
The suggestion to clear their browser cache should be added to the unblock my IP message today. I will also update this information on Stratics FB to spread this information out more.
We are sorry for any frustration this is causing but it does allow us to keep active while they focus on the heart of the problem with the DDoS attack itself.
