How to make Gold: Part I - Mining

Since people always tend to come on here and complain about being poor - I thought I'd document some easy ways to make gold in UO.

Part I - Mining
Character : 100 Mining, 70 Chiv other skills not needed
Pet : Fire beetle, bonded
Armor : 100% LRC suit with +5 mining gloves
Equipment: Gargoyle Pickaxes, Book on Mining Gems
Macros: (1) Last Object
(2) Last Object Last Target
Location/Process: Cove Fel city (in guardzone), dismount beetle, use pickaxe on mountain, hold down macro 2 until pack full or no more ore, smelt ore on beetle, go to next spot - repeat. If run out too quickly - then use macro 1 and target next location 5 tiles away. Virtually no risk since you are always in guardzone and guards insta kill any elementals.

I took current Great Lakes prices for Special Gems and best price for Ingots (some of these might be low as there were some vendor deals). The regular gem prices are lowest NPC price for them.

I mined for 10 min straight and then captured my results.

Multiply times 6 for a full hour = 997k per hour

Granted I was a bit lucky with find 2-3 val spots - but unlucky in number of special gems found in 10 min. 2 more special gems would offset the Val finds.

This is a way to pretty easiliy generate 1mil gold in value per hour of play with little to no risk and resources. Gargoyle pickaxes easy to come by if you turn in completed iron ex bods.

Kinda confused me there. More than likely trying to help those new to the game make a lil cash, I applaud you giving them a way to go about it. But just so they know, if you are only doing the 100 mining and 70 Chiv there is really no need for a 100% LRC suit. Any tossed together suit will work. Just tithe a little for SJ.

On an average day (usually after my kids are in bed lol) I'll mine for a solid 2 hours, just cus I need the materials to fill bods, and I enjoy it. It's very relaxing for me, not sure why lol.

Same with killing blood ellies, not sure why those are my favorite things to kill with my tamer but I enjoy it.

Each person has their own way of making gold, this is just one very good way to do so.

Being a lazy mutt and not paying a hefty vendor tax is an exploit.....as is yanking items and replacing them to avoid fees.

Check this out chuckles......when AoS first came out, I made my first couple of million MINING. I mined for hours getting gold ore.....that's an exploit??

I think because some sell pixels for fake gold and are too lazy to do things the old fashioned way, have a serious jealousy problem.

Mining and selling is what UO USED to be about........I'm not into the scripters and don't condone that sissy stuff......I believe in working for our play gold......one more thing, buying fake gold for real money goes beyond pathetic.

There are many ways to earn gold in UO. Training skills can make you gold just by selling your creations to the npc's. From alchemy to Warrior, gold is easy if you just sit back and think of all the things UO has to offer.

As for you Ravenwinterhawk, If your so lazy not to want to mine, chop wood, fish, or do anything of the crafter nature you dont need to.. you just buy from the ones who do and shut up. Its pure lazyness on your part to want it all handed to you... How do you think the gold got in the game in the first place? You have the right to your opinion, but to be frank about your wishes of having it all handed to you as if your deserving of it is so irking to the rest of us who earn our way as it should be.

I might have overlooked it, but if not, don't forget about crystalline blackrock and saltpeter. If you mine in ter mur, crystalline blackrock is a rare drop, and mining in dungeons can unearth a niter deposit which yields between 50 and 200 saltpeter.

On atlantic saltpeter is going for 275 each at the new mag brokers, and crystalline blackrock is at 30k. With a high luck suit I can pull 10 or 11 cryst b-rock in an hour, on a slow hour, and a couple thousand saltpeter.

This is completely dependent on having a vendor in Luna where the renter doesn't charge you an astronomical recurring vendor rental fee. If you don't have a Luna vendor, then this doesn't work as well because people tend to buy in bulk and only look in Luna (or maybe right around some of the moongates).

Few notes:

1 - Correct the LRC suit is not required but it makes it zero cost to go back and forth with your resources. I actually get into Cove by using the crystal portal 'Fel Cove Mint' works great. There is a bank there to dump your ingots as well so you can technically stay there as long as you want gathering.

2 - True Tel Mur has different resoruces but then the amt you mine is cut by 50%. If someone wants to take my numbers, mine for 10 or 20 min in Tel Mur and post results - we could use that as additional data point.

3 - This is not script mining but strip mining with a beetle. I do it while watching a sports event or something. There is no risk and gives great rewards. I don't sell the stuff - I use it to fill bods/craft/imbue.

4 - Prices - I took the lowest price each ingot was on vendors for in GL. There were higher priced ones but these were the lowest. Even at 50% of ingot prices, its still 100k for 10 min or 600k/hr.

The goal here was to show those people that claim 'I never have more than a million gold, I'm poor' etc etc that there are dozens of ways to make easy gold in UO. Here is a way to make $1m/hour. Do this 4-5 hours a week and you have cash to spend.

I am a BOD filling maniac on my main shard and I am always buying ingots. The thing i noticed about this chart is if these are competitive rates on GL, they are significantly higher than on my shard. Like the 600 per for val....luna prices 225 per on the vendor that always has them in stock. Gold ingots: 200 for you vs 85 per for me. And those are top, not ask in chat and get a good deal prices.

It's still certainly an easy way to make some gold, but not as lucrative on some shards as yours.

Step #1 got to a popular shard head to luna and spam NEWB PLZ HELP ME SPARE SOME GOLD FOR THE POOR though this is considered bad taste it does work I don't do this but i know some who have and they do well when they beg. Darn rp.
The best gold maker i found is simply farming imbue regs at the moment essence of order crystalline blackrock arcanic runestones crystal shards seeds of renewal all sell very well and for alot i can farm 30k shadow iron and 40-60 crystalline blackrock in a coupple hours in the yamotsu mines with an elemental slayer spellbook casting bombard at shadow/dull copper elementals. thats 3-5 mil an hour beats mineing hands down!

However the best gold maker is IDOC's hands down!

Of course not, the best gold maker is, like in RL, arbitrage.

In UO mainly arbitrage between Asian/non-Asian shards: due to the complete lack of communication between the normal players of english speaking and japanese speaking shards, you can get tons of items on a shard and sell them instantly several times the price on another.

We are talking about billions gps per day here. And the business is even encouraged by the stupid idea of having shard-specific items dropped by EMs every single day. And I won't even talk about the technically unavoidable duping issue as long as you maintain separate shards and a way to xfer between them.

Anyway I don't do arbitrage in UO because the cost of the xfer tokens is such that you have to do it in a nearly pro way, and once you start going that path you never do anything else in the game. Basically it is not my idea of entertainment to just do the same kind of trading job than IRL for 1/100th the RL $money But just be aware that it is what the real *uo-rich* people do in the game, and they drive the market.

You can actually make macros for mining in your UO assist. I found the info on stratic years ago and modified it a bit on my end with the pauses and worked perfect. Easy to just hit the macro keys.

With higher luck you find bigger stones of Saltpeter and find Saltpeter more often. 2000 Luck (After touch luck statue) Is very helpfull when digging for Saltpeter in the Abyss.

I usually claim that. It prevents others from trying to borrow stuff/money from me. (And sometimes I really dont have that much.)
The point is, that you dont necessarily need to farm/earn much gold to enjoy the game.

And there are some (minor) mistakes in your calculation, thought some of them are already mentioned:
- ppl buy in bulk if they buy, so you rarely can sell in low amounts. Saying you can earn 800k in 10 minutes is wrong. (And you havent calculated the time needed to sell into.)
- vendor fees: if someone sets up a vendor, he has to pays fees (to the game) for everything, that is sold.
- mining regular gems: At an attempt, you mine gems or ingots. From my feelings mining ingots only is more profitable than mining ingots + gems. (Mainly becourse I use ingots more than gems once Imbuing is trained up.)
- Using gargoyle pickaxes and calling the guards onto the elementals is wasted. If someone cannot kill them, he should use prospector tools. (Not to mention that those are often cheaper than garg picks, easier to get in numbers and last longer.)
- ingot prices vary from shard to shard and the rarer an ingot colour is, the less is the demand for it. (Bod fillers need way more dull/shadow for the profitable pof-bods.)
- unloading the character takes time. While you can maybe strip mine 10 minutes without rest, you have to take breaks for unloading your char and replacing used up mining tools. It cuts down your 6*10-minutes-mining results per hour mining calculation.

At GM fishing I can fill a blue beetle in around 30-40 minutes. That are 160 dungeon or shore water fishes. Not too bad, if you count in profits and if I would sell some of my fish.

There are many ways to earn gold ingame. Dont expect it to be earned super-fast if you are a new player. If you play the game a lot, you will gather gold without concentrating to it slowly over time. Getting to know the/some ppl on your shard usually is way more helpful than earning gold fast. Especially if your on a shard with a lower population.

My wife & I have mined for 1000s of hours over the last however many years it is now. You know, its fun. It will take a lot of your time. But, isn't that what we're doing? We're spending time playing a game. We bought our first keep with ingots we mined in one week. Course, that was a loooong time ago.

My miner is also a tinker so I can make shovels (vs picks which weigh more) on the fly with iron ingots. When I stockpiled 200-300 sturdy shovels from BODs then I'd use them, else crafted items.

I used CC with UOA for picking the vein, working it 5 times, smelting on the beetle and even organizing ingots into an inner pack, I only offloaded ingots to a packie when my carry weight was about 90% of capacity. My STR was maxxed at 125 so that was a lot of weight to haul.

This isn't quite the optimal guide to making money from mining; in particular, having the Elementals guard whacked is a phenomenal waste of resources. They carry both Crystaline Blackrock, and 25 ore of their elemental type... and at the price listed that's a potential 30k in Valorite per elemental just for the ingots. 10 blackrock is another 545k according to Great Lake prices.

Instead, do the following, which requires a little setting up, and a combat capable Miner, but pays enormous dividends;

Choose a location in Trammel, any mountain range will do. Start strip mining it in one direction. Every time you hit an elemental spot, mark a rune to it, and put it in a rune book marked for that ore type. Because no one seems to bother with strip mining any more, you will find that some spots will never see another miner but you, which means you get the full benefit of that spot.

An hour should get you around 8 agapite spots, 5 Verite and maybe 1 or 2 Valorite. Mark a rune to the spot you stop strip mining at. Now using the Prospectors tool first and then the Gargoyle Axe on the Agapite, and the Gargoyle Pick Axe alone on both the Verite and Valorite, go and whack away and kill every Valorite elemental that appears. Smelt the resulting Valorite natch.

Now when you run out of the above spots, use the other ore sites you marked to either summon more Elementals (Blackrock seems to appear most commonly on Bronze or above Elementals to me) or get the ore you personally need or want to sell until the timer resets and the first Agapite/Verite/Valorite location is valid again. Then return to it and start elemental whacking away again...

Eventually, one of the spots will randomly shift to another ore type. When it does, move it's rune over to the correct book, and using the rune at the last spot you strip mined too continue in the same direction you were mining; because everyone's over in fel macro mining, you can be pretty sure the spots behind you are still as you found them. So move forward looking for a new high level spot in the downtime.

In this manner you should get enormous amounts of both Blackrock and Valorite, without worrying about being PK'd or stolen from.

Smelt all the resulting iron too, and fill small BODs after the Axes and Prospectors tools, and a little extra cash too; don't forget to pick them up for cheap off vendors, or even dropped for that five fingered discount in Luna Blacksmiths! When you run out, the above system still works, but is more dependent on you locating the high level ores for their own sake of course... but it may make more sense to switch to mass mining in safe zones over in Felluca.

If you have the Blackrock stew recipe like I do, you can also convert the small blackrock into stew and sell it for upwards of 5k a shot too.

I use garg axes since for prospect tools I have to prospect and then retarget with shovel. Using the axe raises it with each swing as I go.

I could use both but then I actually like the fact that I get mostly DC ingots which I need for POF bods.

Again - there are 80 different variations of 'how to mine'. This was simply showing my method and the amount of gold value that can be generated in x amount of time.

You don't need to sell this on vendors and incurr the fees - sell in general chat. It might take some time but honestly you can advertise while you mine.

Lastly someone said I stated 800k in 10 min. I said 166k in 10 min which extrapolated would be close to 1mil in an hour.

Its only a single sample, your results may vary but its a way to make money fairly quickly in game.

One method I usually use for getting a quick foothold on a new shard is to make a tamer with 50 taming skill and 50 magery. Do a few quests in Haven to make a little more gold to be able to buy training for any other skills you want your tamer to have. And using your starting dagger, kill bunches of sheep outside Haven and then spin and weave the wool at the tailor shop to make yourself a nice tidy pile of bandages.

When you're all set on bandages and have at least 60 gold pieces in the bank, use the moongate to get to Ter Mur. Tame a horse or a ridable llama in the area around the moongate and then cross over the bridge to the east, make a right and head sort of south east. Soon you'll run into some lowland and ruddy boura. (You may also encounter some sliths, silver serpents and bats and maybe some void creatures, but generally if you stay close to the water, the aggressive spawn is pretty light and easily outrun if you took the time to tame a llama or horse to ride.) Tame two lowland bouras, drag 'em back to the Ter Mur stable, toss them an apple each, tell them to follow you and pitch them in the stable to bond for a week. Then go back and tame two more lowland bouras.

Grab yourself a nice pile of bandages and reagents for cure spell (garlic and ginseng) and head to the Spirituality gate in Ilshenar. Head northeast to the champ spawn area. Kill shadow wisps until you work the spawn up to wisps and ki-rins. Proceed to kill and loot regular wisps and use your bandages to vet the bouras. If you're lucky, maybe you'll get an SoT and also loot some LRC pieces. They won't be great, but they'll help with slowing down your reagent or tithing point usage. The bouras will usually handle regular wisps just fine especially if you're using a pair of them and brought lots of bandages. You may have to occasionally cast Cure spell or Cleanse by Fire on them to cure poisoning, since your vet skill probably won't be high enough yet to cure poisoning. And if a boura dies, you can always go tame a replacement pretty quickly. Just be sure to leave your first pair in the stable to bond.

Killing wisps at the champ spawn area for a few hours daily for 2-3 days is usually sufficient to get you enough gold to buy a full spellbook and maybe a full LRC suit and some low-level power scrolls. Work on taming skill and raising magery and other skills when you get bored with that. When your taming skill is mid-50s, take one lowland boura with you and lots of bandages and go tame a high plains boura north of the Royal City. The lowland boura can be the punching bag (be sure to keep it bandaged!) while you tame the high plains boura. By the time your first pair of bouras have bonded, you should be in fairly good shape to use them to kill harder stuff and then a few days later you can sub in the bonded high plains boura. The experience you got with using them against wisps will give you a good idea of what they can and cannot handle.

Anyway, that's what I like to do, since I enjoy taming and using pets. Don't really care too much what anyone thinks of the bouras...they're very good newbie tamer pets and make it a lot easier and enjoyable to build a tamer character without spending the money or gold to use an advanced character token.

I do alot of mining but I have never mined up regular gemss--when I try to change to mine gems on my shovel I get message I dont know how to do this. But I do get the rare Gems when I mine.

You can buy a book from a npc in Ter-mur to learn it. (Similar like those for mining for granite or sand)

Who sells it? I went there and checked several npc's can you point me in a direction?
