How much time do you spend?

Playing this inane mess? Finding it sucks you in and then your spending more and more time gathering gold, replicas, whatever?

Spending less and less time with family, freinds, the real world? This without a doubt is the most indepth game I have played because it takes forever to do anything meaningful within the game without resorting to cheating.

Then oneday it hits you....Ive played uo on and off for 11 years, huge breaks but still 11 years, add up all the wasted time and it really is a shock.

I'd be both afraid and embarrassed to guess on totals really. 0-80+ hours in a week over time. Currently somewhere in the middle, doubt it'll increase again :) Wife was my primary "wingman" for many years, she's down to maybe 6 hours a week. For us I suppose it's impossible to forecast the future, reality and commitments tend to be the priority, UO has and remains a top form of "recreation." Keeping it all in context, I guess it depends on what dev has to offer in the days/ months/ years to come.

And yes, theres much to do in UO. But who says family and friends need be excluded! Keep it in perspective, you'll never be shocked.

Over the last 9 years or so I've spent as much as 80+ hours a week at UO.... but I'm not married, don't drink, not much of a gambler, don't party, not a smoker. I work an awful lot and my kids are older and don't really have much time for "Mom"... and I have a bunch of friends online... so in between chatting with friends I play UO... Never was much for T.V. so I can't say I've "wasted time" playing UO... I've enjoyed it.

I've met some really interesting people from all walks of life. Many different religions too. I've made some good friends. And yes I can call them friends even though we've never met face to face IRL.

I've enjoyed countless hours doing things like hunts, events, and most of all the design and deco aspect of the game. I've had tons of fun with PvP. I'm still having fun.

Though I will admit I'm probably down to less than 40 hours a week. I've considered many times dropping several accounts. But I keep finding an excuse not to. A new plot, a castle, a keep, some wonderful RP area that is needed. A Tavern. Who knows always some excuse or another.

All in all I can't complain. If they shut down UO tomorrow I'd be very sad and I know I'd miss many friends. But I think I'd be ok... sure I'd have withdrawl.... I think I'd even dream of the game for awhile... but eventually I'd get over it. Would I ever go play another game? Would it ever mean as much to me as UO. Doubtful. I've looked at a great many games... even trialed a few ... but nothing matches UO for depth and fun.

hmm ...

*ponders how to respond*

... ok, let me say "yes", sometimes I actually do add up the hours and ask myself what else I could have done with that time.

But then I stop and look at the time I'm not playing UO and ask myself "what have I done with that time?" and I work on that. When I feel that I have made the most of all the empty spaces between logins, then I re-examine my time spent with UO. Until then, my time in Sosaria is, and will remain, guilt-free.

However I do have one iron rule: reality trumps UO. If someone asks for my time in the real world, I don't say no if the alternative is to play (or talk about) UO.

Almost 12 years, and 30+ hours per week - and none of it was wasted.

Aside from the friends and family that I have in game, It's the best entertainment value out there that I've found.

UO is a world to escape the real world that we live in. Unfortunately, the real world is rather unfair and unpredictable. That is why many of us resort to spending our time in this game instead of perhaps getting in a massive car wreck by accident or succumbing to peer pressure and doing something dumb like taking drugs. It's annoying when people ask the question "Why do I play this game?" because in reality they already know the answer to the question.

9 Years ago when I was a uni student: 3-4 hours a day.
Around 2002 after moving in with my ex-gf: 0 hours a day. Kept my account open but kept it a secret from her (didn't want her to think I was a geek or something for playing an online game).
2007-2008 after a bad break up: 2-3 hours a week, usually sunday nights only. Not ready for a new relationship and needed something to fill the void.
2009 after telling my incompetent boss to go **** himself (i.e. I quit my job) and after both my soccer and basketball team got disbanded: 2-3 hours a day.

Yup, I already feel like a loser.

It seems like you made the mistake to play a computer game and forgetting the real life about it. I sometimes did that 10 years ago when UO hit the market. I took a break. Now, 7 years later, I have returned to Britannia and I only play for fun. No item hoarding. No pressure. And real life always has higher priority.

I wish more people would understand that it is much more fun to play UO that way.

Probably more than I should, but.
My kids have grown up and left home, my hubby is either in the room with me playing too or playing some other game on the x box. Nothing's getting neglected.

I couldn't agree more. But my break was only 6 years.

This is exactly why I play UO. :D

I've actively played for 6 years now. I started back in 2000, but took a break from '04 - '07. I still play the account I created with the code out of my UO:R box. (Created October 2000) There have been times where I'd spend over 60 hours a week playing, and others where I'd play 10 or less. It varies on my mood. Last week I must have logged at least a good 40 hours, most of that being one marathon session training last Sunday. But when we had that revert and I lost everything I had done that day, I was a little discouraged. As a result I've spent maybe 8 hours in game this week.

I think I manage to keep a good balance between UO and RL.

Now wasting time lurking about the boards at the office... well that's another story. ;)

Add up all these hours on UO. Then think of the classics you could have read or the languages you could have learned or the places you could have gone...

Computer games are pretty much the opium of the masses now along with tv.

hen, aged, now-irrelevant literature is the opium of the elitist - I've seen far too many people waste their time and money rereading things that people have already read for generations or walking over trails that have already been walked thousands of times - in the end, to most people those things are just empty experiences that will vanish in memory no differently than time playing a MMORPG :)

( now, if you'd talked about the books that could have been *written* ... well, maybe I'd be a little more sympathetic :) )

I've attempted numerous times to read the 'classics' and frankly, with the exception of catcher in the rye, I've found them all to dry, bland, and utterly unappealing. Though, I do spend a fair amount of time reading and own quite a few books, some of which have been read to the point where they're starting to fall apart.

I don't feel any of my time is wasted, no matter if it's spent playing a computer game, watching a movie, sitting on the porch drinking beer and watching the grass grow.

I'm only on this planet for 90 years or so (if I'm lucky), I'm going to enjoy my time the way I see fit. It's really irrelevant what others think would be a 'better' use of my time. To me the classics, learning foreign languages, and visiting other countries seems like a waste of time. Time I could better spend doing something I consider fun.

Then you add up the subs you'd been paying for the past 11 years. And it looks like alot. Until you realize that it's still cheaper than most other forms of entertainment (not to mention transport)!

That's how Thoreau got started on Walden. Nothing wrong with sitting on the porch with a beer. Add up all the hours you have spent in UO. Now think to yourself; 'How good would my Urdu be now if I had done that instead?'

Harlequin, you couldn't be more right.
Last month I went to the movies twice, once to see Wolverine, once to see Star Trek. Between tickets, popcorn and soda, I spent about $35.00 on roughly 4 hours of entertainment.

Monthly, I spend less than $30.00 for UO subscriptions, and it gives me at least 40 (sometimes many more) hours of entertainment each month.

There's no better value for your money.

Why would I waste my time learning a language I will never use, and most likely, never even encounter in my life?

I'm a little on the older side... and been HAPPILY divorced since long before UO came out.

Even though I spend a good amount of time in game, it does not take a priority over real life - ever. I run a Real Estate Brokerage and Management Company that can be quite stressful and keeps me very busy. Anyone in my alliance will tell you that I will drop UO in a heartbeat for family or work.

UO is my stress relief... :)
