But Kelmo, ye left out one option in the poll.

I dont play to WiNzEr.

I don't win to play *persay* (although I checked this choice cuz my ghosts are laughing or dancing when dead)

I play to simply have fun !

I think it silly to say to someone we own them. Slavery has been abolished in many nations so meh ....and otherwise only way one thus then can become owned is if ya let em think they actually OWN anybody, or take their lame words seriously when in reality they own nothing but their own pixel chr that they pay for, & when in reality they do not own anybody at all in rl against the law in most places to OWN other human beings. Thus especially in a silly pixel game format, their owning anybody else is far from a rl anything, sooooooooooooo they can "say it" all they want to/or need to say it in a game, to feel good bout themselves or whatevers..but....it dont change a darn foo thing unless they own slaves they do not "own" a single person no matter what/who they babbling about pwning in a game ! har !

I think we all WIN UO the game merely as long as it remains entertaining or FUN in game to us whatever we are playing as characters, otherwise we here as unhappy customers and should go find ..something else more constructive, to do with our rl time/money.

Personally I am tolerant of all styles of play.

I respect those guys that have and/or take the time to excel at the game. I don't
understand the criticism of that at all. It takes a lot of time, practice, and teamwork
to really dominate in combat. Most of us just wish we were in a situation like that.

I also respect the people who apply a kinder way to their game... enjoy the
story, and the more social aspects. These people make up the "heart" of every
shard including Siege.

I must say though... when it swings too much in either direction it gets kind of
boring. There should always be kind folks to socialize with... and there should
always be great fighters who make you think "oh hell!" whenever their names pop
up on your screen. To me, this is UO. Always has been....

The TRULY great players, however, are able to do all of the above. Very few of
us fall into that category. Most of us do one or the other, and seem to act as
if the two styles cannot mix. This is not the case.... most of us are just not good
enough to do both.

Cheers!

Silly vampire. Don't you know that WAKA are like mogwais? If you get water on them, they instantly multiply. I suspect that what really happened, is that during the fight, someone in REV must have pushed a WAKA into a nearby water trough or clumsily spilled their plant watering pitcher all over them, and thus the count kept incrementing, causing confusion. What surprises me though, is that the shard didn't crash shortly afterward, from reaching critical mass.

A Parable about Balance

Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Heaven, God was missing for six days.

Eventually, Michael the archangel found him, resting on the seventh day.

He inquired of God, "Where have you been?"

God sighed a deep sigh of satisfaction and proudly pointed downwards through the clouds, "Look Michael, look what I've made."

Archangel Michael looked puzzled and said, "What is it?"

"It's a planet," replied God, "and I've put Life on it. I'm going to call it Earth and it's going to be a great place of balance."

"Balance?", inquired Michael, still confused.

God explained, pointing to different parts of earth, "For example, northern Europe will be a place of great opportunity and wealth while southern Europe is going to be poor; the Middle East over there will be a hot spot. Over here I've placed a continent of white people and over there is a continent of black people," God continued, pointing to different countries. "This one will be extremely hot and arid while this one will be very cold and covered in ice."

The Archangel, impressed by God's work, then pointed to a large land mass and said, "What's that one?"

"Ah," said God. "That's Michigan, the most glorious place on earth. You'll notice that it is made in the fashion of my hand, the Hand of God. There are beautiful lakes, rivers, sunsets and rolling hills. The people from Michigan are going to be modest, intelligent and humorous and they are going to be found traveling the world. They will be extremely sociable, hard working and high achieving, and they will be known throughout the world as diplomats and carriers of peace."

Michael gasped in wonder and admiration but then proclaimed,"What about balance, God?" "You said there would be balance!"

God replied wisely, "Wait until you see the idiots I'm putting in there around them in Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin and Canada"

Hahahaha.. I only wish I was that organized. My RoT consists of sticky notes with attempts to scribble out my last gain. Of course I get distracted so half way through RoT everything is all scratched out. Then, I glance over at the egg timer and smack my forhead, and toss out the sticky notes.

I would keep track of them, but then the large number of gains I miss every day would dismay me, so I've decided it is best to keep calculations out of the picture. Plus my specialty in college is math, and I'm too lazy to do any more than I need to...

You should have seen my book I had going just before I took a 3 month break.
I was working 4 accounts at the same time, each with 5 to 7 skills in RoT.
I measured EACH skill gain, I would mark a time 6 minutes, 11 minutes or 21 minutes from the last one and go back and forth for a freaking hour or two. Then one day half way into RoT I canceled all four accounts and went to BC for a week

I'm sorry.
Here's a serious post.
There had to be one. I think.

How do I play?

Very little. UO has gradually become more and more like a job, if you can picture a job in which the only payment is job satisfaction.

I spend a fair bit of time with NEW - finding newcomers to the shard, teaching them about the shard, equipping them, and guiding them through their first month on Siege. Most of that is done by speaking to them at the NEW guild house, or on the UOAM, or occasionally, on ICQ.
It's very worthwhile, and I get a lot of satisfaction out of it, but to call it 'play' is stretching the word a lot. The closest it gets to 'play' would probably be when I get a 'Help! 2 Ettins and a troll are chasing me!' message.

I spend a fair bit of time writing up the news articles for Stratics.
I've written a fair bit of code to automate the story night reporting now, but it used to take about 5 hours per article. (It's now down to about 1 hour, not counting hunting for graphics).

I'm also writing a few apps for Stratics - a couple of you already know about those. (no more details at present).

I spend a fair bit of time writing stories for CWS story night.

All of these things are related to UO - and to Siege in particular - but to call them 'play'.. I don't know. Would you call them 'play'? Most have deadlines, or require me to put aside other things (e.g. farming monsters) to get them done.

I'm NOT complaining. I thoroughly enjoy all of those activities. I just question whether they're really play. 'Volunteer work' would seem a more appropriate term.

The only UO-related time that I would truly call play is the time I spend with KSS - patrolling, hunting, training, etc. That's play, and it's also fun.

How do I play? With amazement. Amazement that I found a spare moment to log into the game!

Am I having fun?

AYE!!!!

Serious and On Topic...what is this world coming to?
.

I agree with you..sometimes I think trying to establish and lead a guild is more time and effort than I spend at a normal job or in college. I love the experience because it presents the opportunity to interact with new people of various cultures and beliefs on gaming morals, and perhaps do my part to help rebuild the strength of roleplaying communities on Siege. It is fun, but it's also taxing on time...I find sometimes I can't find the opportunity to logon because I'm busy drafting up guild laws or translating various things to latin for the guild...still fun nonetheless.

I think his reference is to Daan's handwritten notebooks of RoT gains, and such, completely overlooking the underlying problem here, that Daan is sick, and needs help.
