hit area and vampiric embrace

I looked for an answer but thought I'd just ask. Does hit area physical work with vampiric embrace? So if I'm surrounded by 3-4 things and the weapon goes off, do I gain life back from all of them or just the main target? I guess the same question would apply to whirlwind.

Whirlwind: definitely
Hit Area: not that I've noticed. I'm pretty sure hit area doesn't leech.
