Help with Peace/Provo/Tamer template

Hello all, i just came back to the game and im am in the midst of switching skills around and making my other tamer/mage a tamer/peacer/provo. I would like some form of magery to get around and gate new tames also. So some form of magery even with some failures would be good but i don't know the best way to build this.

So i need some help. Assume i have access to 120 scrolls and 715/720 account (its 715 i do believe)

What would you say the best combo of
-Music
-Peace
-Provo
-Taming
-Lore
-Vet
-Magery (any other suggestions for the getting around would be great)

Also, what would be my optimal stats (Str, Dex, Int)

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

Such friendly, helpful, responses.. I hope this isnt the way the entire community has turned around because its been JUST as hard getting a response on my home server as it is getting a response here. Silence, no response, nothing...

I remember years ago when UO was all about the community and helping others. How it all has changed in the last 13 years :(

For me disco is a must on my tamer, makes it soo much faster to kill things..

I run
120 Taming
120 lore
120 Vet
120 Music
120 disco
120 peace or provo(depends on what im doing)
90 Magery

I make use of skill jewels to get my skill points

Disco is a pain to train but its well worth it i think

Do the skill points from jewelry take away from any other possible mods you could have?

Also, i was thinking Provo to help maintain crowd control during spawns. I like having the crowd control ability!

I run with 90 disco so i jewel that up when i need too, not able to check right now but i know the only skill i have with real 120 in is music and peace/provo so for what i do i don't think i'm missing other mods.
For crowd control I still love using peace for area peace and targeted. I currently have provocation on mostly for the inspire song but I find it isn't that helpfull and I keep going back to peace which has nice spell songs too.

Yikes, so quick to jump down our throats! I was sleeping from the time of the original post to the time of your finger-wagging at the horrible tamer community, Alpha.... Give people some time! Not everybody lives in the forums. Some people sleep, have jobs, families, etc. The tamer forum here is comprised of some of the most helpful UO folks I've ever known in my 13 years in-game.

Anyway....

I run with:

Taming/vet/lore/magery/music/discord, all at 120 natural.

I have 120 peace on a soulstone to swap out.

I use disco for fighting mobs, peace for taming new pets.

Skill jewels do not take away from your skill cap. You can essentially go over 720 via skill jewels, but you can't bring any one skill over its max (so if you're scrolled to 120, can't bring that single skill over 120).

I don't like to rely on jewels and would rather dedicate the jewel slots to non-skill enhancements. Thus, I train to 120.

I have my str at 100, dex at 15, and the rest in int, and have some +stamina to prevent getting fatigued when running. (When you fight with a greater dragon, you can't be mounted on a pet, so you have to run on foot).

With my template, magery is primarily for travel and healing. Without Eval Int, it's fairly useless as an offensive skill (with the only real spell option being mind blast). So keep in mind that in this setup, your pet is your primary form of offense.

Some people drop vet in order to add, say, peace or provo to run 2 bard skills - but depending on the situation, magical healing isn't always enough to keep your pet alive. You also need vet to resurrect your pet if it dies. So I prefer to keep vet on my template.

Hope that helps. I don't have much experience with provo, but from the people I know that run it on our Doom runs, it seems very situational - useful if you know you'll be fighting group mobs. I do a lot of solo hunting, and it doesn't seem like I'd use it as much in those situations.

Thanks Kitiara, by the way, did you derive your name from Dragonlance?

Only reason i mentioned that earlier is because i had 20+ views with no response, and have had similiar luck on Catskills when trying to ask guild mates or in general chat. I've played UO off and on since '97 so i guess i've seen the community degrade quite a bit. Missing the old days of yore!

So my question to you Kit, would be, does the 120 magery really provide that much healing? Do you find yourself using greater heal often on your pet? In my hay-day I only really remember using Vet since it was pretty efficient. I assume things hit much harder now?

I also feel the same way you do about relying on jewels. I prefer real skill. Since i can be forgetful at times and would hate to have one of those wild pet moments.

Can you better describe to me the usefulness of the Disco vs Peace vs Provo mastery usages?

Out of curiosity, did you really think that peeing in the pool was the best way to get others to swim with you?

Your first post was at Midnight and your second post, scolding us all for sleeping instead of paying attention to you, was at 10:30am... on a Saturday!!

Don't think too much of yourself, do ya?

Out of curiosity, how long have you been so cocky as to believe that everyone in the world has the exact same sleep schedule as you, lives the exact same lifestyle as you, and reads these boards at the exact same time as you?

Next time you might want to read what i typed in my previous response, where i said there had been 20+ views since i originally posted, and yes it had been nearly 11 hours that it was up. I would assume out of those 11 hours that my post had approximately 5-8 hours worth of exposure time to those 20+ viewers, and yet not one of them took the time to say anything. If you were around for the past 13 years you would know that back in my time a thread such as mine wouldnt have made 10 views without 2-3 responses. I was openly speaking what my current perceptions of the state of the community are.

But thank you for letting me explain myself, i greatly appreciate it :) Now go troll somewhere else, kplzthxbye!

Oh, I see. You're just not smart enough to understand that being nasty is probably not the way to get a community to help you.

My mistake. I gave you more credit than you're worth.

Carry on.

Disclaimer: I type in the most direct manner possible, to get to the point as efficiently as i can. This typically makes my text come off aggressive, abrasive or even rude. My intent is never typically meant to be so, just strictly to achieve the goal in the least amount of time possible.

Your accusation of me being nasty is an assumption based off of that previous fact.
My OP was ended with a pleasant thanks in advance. My 2nd post i believe you and others may have read with the wrong intent as your driving description. I was slightly disappointed that things have degraded so far in this community that i have loved for many years where my questions go for days in General Chat, at Luna Bank and then for half a day on this board had gone completely unanswered. Frustration had set in and i was reminiscing on old times. My mistake for hoping the community was just as welcoming as it had been years ago.

My 3rd, 4th and 5th posts i dont see where you think im coming off nasty. As for my 6th post, the one in response to you, of course it was not the most pleasant since you decided to jump into the thread with your incorrect assumptions of my intent. Although, the fact that persists here is, if you do not wish to be responded to in the same fashion you post then do not post. Plain and simple.

Just think of Microsoft SAM's voice when you read my posts and we'll always be on good terms :) Text never relays emotion correctly so i tend to leave it out as often as possible.

So if you'd like to respond Retro, please do me the favor of taking a moment to step outside of the box and realize that i am not being Nasty, Rude, Arrogant, or what not. Just plain, blunt, to the point. I was raised by a navy man, my father, my idol. He believed in getting straight to the point :)

Have a good day, Retro :)

Patience is always appreciated on the forums, but it never helps if someone is impatient because the first person was impatient, then it goes back and forward lol.

Now, let's all play nice with each other from here.

I'm going to bed now, and if I have to mod anyone before I've had my first coffee tomorrow...it's gonna hurt :D

I'll try and contribute something more substantial before I start work in the morning, but I know we've had several good discussions about bard tamers so searching might give you more answers in the meantime.

Aye :)

So my question to you Kit, would be, does the 120 magery really provide that much healing? Do you find yourself using greater heal often on your pet? In my hay-day I only really remember using Vet since it was pretty efficient. I assume things hit much harder now?
I find the magical healing to be useful when the mobs don't allow me to comfortably stand next to my pet - say, in the Doom Gauntlet, for example, or at a champ spawn. Those larger fights are when I stand back and use magical healing. If I fall behind and my pet gets below half health, I'll run in and vet a few bandaids, and run back out. When out fighting solo, I tend to use vet - mostly because it's faster (more hp healed at a time).

Can you better describe to me the usefulness of the Disco vs Peace vs Provo mastery usages?
I tend not to use the masteries much, as the mana upkeep is expensive! But on my guild's weekly Doom runs, the fighters of the group really like the peacemaking masteries.

My main tamer is Gilthanas, Laurana's brother! My Spellweavers name is Chikar Tahkis (the last name from Queen Tahkisis). I'm a huge Dragonlance fan!

Im going to test out that template. See how i like Disc, i'll stone it off if anything else.

Still wondering about my stats. I noticed the 100 str, min Dex and rest in Int you had mentioned. Just wondering about how often its a problem that you get fatigued. Should my dex be higher maybe? I noticed you said you used jewels, does the stam take away from any other mods? Im new to the imbuing thing, so i have NO clue how it works. I just heard you can only add certain mods to each piece.

As you can see Imbuing has really added a lot to the game. The new Bard system uses real skills. Some people use Chiv to travel. On fresh tamed just go to nearest stable log out and log back in and your pet will be with you. No gate needed.

It comes down to maxing luck or skills. I run a natural disco tamer like stated above with 15 short max luck. Also I only have 5 each frenzy / predator hellcats / hellhounds. My cats are all near max stat rare colors blood and pinks.

A skill hog template has 20 skill on travesty mask. 4x13 skill ring and braclet with 3 LRC each. 10 skill tally. 15 mage book. 10 music arms for the elves. Total 159 + 720 for 879.

120 tame
120 lore
120 vet
120 music
120 disco
120 provo / peace
110 mage
49 left for weaver or whatever

Most archers like having a meatshield around so why not bring your own. Like a Cu that cross heals and heals self. I've soloed a paragon ancient wyrm with an archer tamer with a Cu.

120 tame
115 lore
115 vet
110 archer
110 anatomy
110 tactics
80 chivalry
106 weaver

with new forge tool some sweet 5HCI or 10DI fill in wood armor can be made

Question to ask is how the natural taming skills effects number of pets wanted in the stables.

That explains a good bit! Tyvm!

I like that archer/tamer combo too! Hmm, my 2nd account could definitely try that out!

By the way, what exactly is Max Luck? Whats the cap? EDIT: And what does luck do for you again?

As for taming skill, i just want to be able to handle Bane's if i ever get brave enough.

Just go for the best luck you bank can afford. As an example I always get the max allowed items for loot. This improves chance for a chance at an uber item or just fast way to fill unravel bags for your imbuer. Best way to test difference is kill bunch swoop with low to no luck and the max luck you can gather. Compare the averages of the amount of loot items. Luck has nothing to do with Marty or armor set drops on like swoop. After rubbing the UO Luck statue my 15 max short suit is at 2565 luck. This same Disco Tamer in a luck suit (no resist above 55) drops the bane faster with 5 frenzy then GD tamer. Only the Bane Guard Demons make the pack useless. Pack of trained frenzy can drop discorded bane dragon in two roars. Only needing one archer cure and one greater heal to recover their damage. Speed ideal the bane most often die before you can use your discord skill again.

Make friends with a rune beetle tamer while running a pack. A discorded Dreadhorn under the rune beetle special suffers over 320hp damage total every time the pack roars/attacks. Even Teaming with a Sampire with a HLD Mortal Wound weapon I would imagine would be nasty.

Also most bards forget to bring a pile of Ash reg and a few firehorns on a hotkey.

A

Alphagunner

Well im not quite sure what the pile of Ash and the firehorns on hotkey are for either?

And do you mean Frenzied Ostards?

Warpig Inc

Yes Frenzy Ossi. If you only want to run 5 frenzy and 5 polar bears you only meed to waste like 72 skill on taming.

Firehorns are loot on most creatures. Bronze colored spiral horn. Sulfurous Ash mage reg is 4 per each use.

UO Stratics - Fire Horns

Fire Horns
A fire horn is a weapon that can only be used by bards.
It works as a kind of area effect fire damage spell.
The more points you have in the 4 bard skills, the more damage you will inflict.
Using a fire horn requires at least 52.6 Musicianship skill.
Using a fire horn will use up 4 Sulfurous Ash.
You have to be within 3 tiles of your target to use a fire horn. The ground can be targeted for the center of the 3 space area.
When you use a fire horn there is a small delay until you can use it again.
Each time you use a fire horn there is a 1% chance that it will break.
When used against another player the fire horn will do less damage than against a monster.

Fire Horn Damage

Your Skills:
Your Musicianship: 120 Your Provocation: 120
Your Peacemaking: 120 Your Discordance: 120

Success Chance: 100%
PvP Damage: 54 - 66
PvM Damage: 81 - 100

I have a 4x120 firehorn bard. He does 110 damage to a white wyrm that has been discorded. As a pally sword also with a 100% fire 50% fireball dragon slayer Hally he insta kills the wyrms with a horn blast as his agro.

So 5 frenzy ostard's are more powerful than even Bane dragons, greater dragons, etc... ?

What's it like trying to control 5 seperate animals at the same time? Something tells me it might get pretty hectic

Just treat them as speed bumps and not worry if they die or not. A GD can be done, with them wiped out a few times. Just better to do Swoop instead of GD. Swoop better hunting and rarely does one die vs a discorded swoop. A GD will firebreath one and claw one insta death the first attack even discorded. Now and archer tamer with a Cu vs GD is the win for barbed and scale gathering.

ON EC their lifebars are constant and easy for healing with an aids hotkey. With practice a pack will be used more then a GD. I solo all the Abyss mini champs with a pack.

Oki, 2 bard skills + taming can be a squeeze but it's certainly feasible ;)

Template:
As a general thing I only use skill items on the least important supporting skill in my template. So in my case it's magery and a wee bit on vet. That way you never need to equip items before you control a pet or bard something. It gives you more flexibility in changing your suit too if your boosted skill isn't used all that often - you can go without the item on all the time and use an EC macro to switch jewels quickly when you do need them. For example boosting magery to resurrect someone. Also, if you want to use the bard masteries, real bard skill is best.

Taming skills first. I tend to put real skill in taming and lore to the level I'll need most of the time. In other words, try to set yourself up so you always have enough skill to control the pets you use regularly. So, if I planned to use a bane or dread a lot, then I'd try for 115 taming/110 lore or 112 in both skills. Otherwise, I'd check the skill requirements for the pets I wanted to use here and in my case 110 in taming and lore gives me 99% control. You can still eat a 120 scroll and use skill items to help you tame new pets more easily.

I find my bard gets along ok with just 100 real vet skill. She can boost up if necessary, but being able to disco and provo spawn really reduces the need for vetting.

Bard skills, well I'm trying to get finished to 120 through normal play, but the aim is to pop to 120 in music and my bard skills. I've tried shuffling between disco and provo jewels before masteries arrived, but in honesty it gets a bit fiddly after a while.

I've gone with disco instead of peace, tbh I wouldn't flush peace away if I had trained it, but I just find disco is better for a tamer. If it were me I'd probably try having peace and disco available on soulstones so I could take one or the other depending what I wanted to do.

Provo is a good supporting skill for crowd control. I find it good around a pet like a cu sidhe where the pet can tank a group of spawn while I set about provoking the spawn onto itself.

Equipment:
Equipment wise I restrict myself to gear I've hunted for myself or crafted. My imbuer is training so I still use old horned runic gear I made ages ago. I don't like the look of most arties so um, usually I carry swords of prosperity and a boomstick and I've been known to use a ring of the elements for luck and topping up any resists I have below their max. I tend to share things like luck suits between a few of my girls, but I do have too many chars :D But yeah, basic high resist gear is my only must when it comes to armour. If you can add more things in, great, but I certainly wouldn't pay some of the prices folk charge for "high end" gear. If you want imbued stuff, you might find a crafter willing to do the crafting if you supply ingredients.

Pets:
I use a range of pets, actually GDs, dreads and banes are the least used in my stables. I probably use kitsune most, rune beetles, hiryu, my nightmare, even old school unicorns, normal dragons and WWs. Oh and I have a pack of large and small hellcats. Not for any "power" reasons, I just like cats. Oh and one of my younger girls has frenzies. I'm also dabbling in playing with some of the SA pets for a bit of fun.

Basically I'd recommend you have a range of pets that appeal to you out of fun rather than just power. You'll find several combinations are more powerful than a single GD, though I'd recommend you start with just 2 pets to vet and control then work up to a full pack of 5. Having macros for vetting and controlling individuals is really advisable. Then take out the pet(s) that are strongest vs your target monster (resistant to the damage it does if possible and hitting the target on it's weakest resists).

Thank you very much Wenchy for that post, very informative!

So it looks like these hellcats are a big deal in packs, huh?

Did you mean you could make a macro to heal each individual pet? Or did you mean to make a macro just to call each individual pet out of the clump?

Also, is there somewhere that has a in-depth listing of some of these animals max tameable stats? So i know what to look out for. I'm surprised you use all those older tames over some of the newer stuff. I've heard so much hype about the GD's.

What are the benefits of Kitsunes and Hiryu's? When you say nightmare, there aren't any new nightmares in game right, your talking about the old mares?

EDIT: Oh, you know what i wanted to ask you guys. What guide or info do you use to find where to disco and peace? I've found alot of scattered information and some of it contradicts what the other info says. Wondering what you pro's use? Thanks again!

Oki, novel length post follows - you may need a coffee!

Did you mean you could make a macro to heal each individual pet? Or did you mean to make a macro just to call each individual pet out of the clump?
For my pack I have macros for commanding each individual and additionally a macro to heal each one. UOAssist will help you a lot if you use the old Classic Client, or you can use stored targets in the Enhanced Client.

Pet command wise I try to assign a key to a pet then the commands for that pet come from shift, alt and ctrl held with that key. So I'll have a "x stop, x follow me" macro and also ones for "x kill", "x stay" and x come"

I have a set of "all" commands and a set of 2 keys used for various combinations eg runey and mare etc. One key will be my mount pet, the other is my drag/runey.

It sounds a lot but it saves me having to use my entire keyboard just on pet commands. And it's really easy to remember macros if you have some kinda system for allocating them. I know on all my tamers that F8 is my nightmare or mount macro set for example.

I use this page to navigate the tameables in the Hunter's Guide on Stratics for info (click the pet names and you'll see their stats etc) and there's also uocraft.com where you'll find a handy pet power calculator that lets you input a pet's stats etc and gives you a rough idea if it's good bad or plain ugly. Just remember to eyeball the pet's details afterwards - a high rating pet can still have a weakness you wouldn't want.

GDs are the easy mode pet of choice, but the day before GD's spawned, players still used and succeeded with the older pets. So I'd say to put it in perspective, GD's are 1 pet out of many, and the others are still as useful as always.

So onto other pets. I like kitsune for several reasons. 2 control slots means you can also have a 1 slot mount. My bard often works alongside her pets, so being mounted while the pets are in action is a big plus. Their resists are nicely balanced so they're versatile vs quite a lot of spawns too. Damage output is decent and depending on what you hunt you can match them up with a range of other pets.

Hiryu aren't able to self heal like cu sidhe but they do still make a good tank pet. They're rideable and 4 slots, so like the cu you can be mounted alongside them. Some spawns suit cu sidhe while other times I'll use a hiryu. So I like to have one of each on my tamers.

Nightmares are a bit like kitsune - 2 slots makes them versatile. And they're mounts, so often they'll work alongside a 3 slot pet in my stables as a second attacking pet.

EDIT: Oh, you know what i wanted to ask you guys. What guide or info do you use to find where to disco and peace? I've found alot of scattered information and some of it contradicts what the other info says. Wondering what you pro's use? Thanks again![/quote]
I ended up making my own spreadsheet so I could put in my skill levels and see the appropriate barding difficulty for all the creatures out there. But anything linked from the bard forum FAQ should give you the right details. Likewise the main barding info pages on Stratics will too. Like this one :)

Hope that helps you a bit, but if there's anything else you need help on just yell!

See this is where Ive seen a lot of debate but if you check out any of the many skill calculators you will see :

in order of effective values

"Skill>mod>buff>stat"

That said there are a handful of mods that you just cant go without in some templates like fc/fcr for pvp mages so if there is one or 2 mods ya just have to hang onto go ahead and bump the skill points.

The other thing you'll see is "prestige" players touting the "real skill" it takes to train to 120 in a skill and Ill tell you most of my 120 real skills are on stones set out as a deco. Its a hard bullet to bite but a worthy one.
