From what I understand is that you can only dye the deed before its ever placed as a giant pumpkin. Maybe that has changed (hopefully) since they were released.

Funny story when they came out. A guild member dyed one black and one girl in the guild at the time was really trying to get all the trick or treat items. She had already gotten one of the giant pumpkins, but the guild member who dyed his black said that you can get the black one and that they are rare. Well she spent the next three days going to every NPC to get that black pumpkin. He even tried "helping" her by telling her the type of NPC he "got" it from, and "maybe" it only was in one city too. She was quite upset that she could not get one and was in Teamspeak loudly complaining she hadn't gotten one yet. Well he finally let her know that it could be dyed, and for about an hour she refused to believe it. She finally did, and its now just a really good prank that was done. She did see the humour of it afterwards too.
