What did you take off to add tailoring? (was it a gm skill?) and what is your total real skill now?

As far as getting 120 smith back...train it back up is the only way, id say.

no way to get them back!
what happened was you did not have enough room (points) left to take the whole skill so it auto drops whats needed to make the skill fit! thats why you have to look at the window that pops up!

Thank for replying, looks like i will be gm smith from now on.........many years ago when i went from 100 to 120 its took weeks + 200k of ingots, i would get up at 6am and hammer away outside haven bank watching ppl come and go, dont think i can do that again.

It's a whole lot easier to do these days. The items you can make are more challenging so the skill goes up easier, and the 'make max' option helps a lot too.

Petra what does the "make max" option do? I've been meaning to ask this forever and it's too general to search here with hope of easily finding it...

Maybe you could hold a +60 hammer and not worry. I'm not certain why I have 120 smithy real.

emma royds,
get a salvage bag, put ur ingots in there, make max royal circlets, salvage ingots. lather rinse repeat.
it consumes barely anything as far as ingots goes. u will be at 120 in no time. its really too dam easy.

I think this is sort of true it won't take months and it won't take 120 k ingots as long as you have mining

Best and easiest way to do this is get a salvage bag and put ingots in it [max you can hold] then craft the item that will give you best gains, hit make max and every now and then salvage the items in the bag and drag more ingots into it so you can constanlty craft and salvage ;)

I wanted some blacksmithing on my imbuer/carpenter/tailor so I soulstoned 50 from a new character and bought a +60 hammer. Done.

Woodsman: no it doesn't - the failure chance makes it use more over the long run.

Plus, you have to stop 4x as often to salvage and move the salvaged ingots (and new ones) back into the salvage bag, because of the weight difference, while the Royal Circlets can be made in batches of up to 120 with make max, as long as the tool has that many charges.

I swear I was gaining more on boomerangs than circlets when I did it a few days ago, but it could just be the RNG kicking in.

You DO gain more with the boomerangs - I was disagreeing about the ingot consumption, and the fact that having to stop to recycle boomerangs 4 times as often would probably slow you down more than you gain from the slightly harder items.

Think of it as a comparison to the tailor choice between gaining to 109.x with oil cloths, when you could get faster gains using studded or bone armor pieces. The "more gain" method ends up taking more time, from more frequent stops to reset your salvage bag (due to weight of the items crafted)

Wow, that is too bad. As others have said, it sounds like that you had a soul stone accident. When you were switching skills, you took 20 points away from blacksmithing in order to put another skill on your character. I did the same thing one time with Cartography when I was juggling skills on my many soul stones.

One thing I do now in order to make sure that I don't have soul stone accidents, is I keep all of my skills locked except the one I am taking off or putting on my character, unless of course I am currently gaining in that skill. Even if the skill is zero I lock it. Before I activate a stone, I also take a quick glance at all of my skills to make sure that I didn't accidentally leave something turned up or down the last time I used a soul stone.

Lastly, when I am working with soul stones I never talk to anyone about anything while I am working with them, and I never use a soul stone with I'm under a time deadline or in a hurry.

I'm not saying that you did any of these things, just that is what I do after having an accident similar to yours. At least, as others have said, it isn't as hard to work up blacksmithing as it used to be. :)

take care,

if you use soulstones be VERY CAREFUL about any skill you leave "pointing down"

I run the EC and always add all my important skills to the last tab which is kind of a bookmark. that way before i soulstone i can double check easily if im not sure.

that said i have made some mistakes, lowered my tactics below 90, etc. so i couldnt use specials for a while. lesson learned. i would hate to do it on something like smithy... heavens forbid imbuing, yikes

so anyway i did the boomerangs, liked them a lot.
