I was hunting pretty late last night with my greater, didn't realize how late it was, and got logged off at server down. When I logged in today, my greater was gone! I didn't show any followers (cast my ethy just in case, which cast just fine). checked the stable, no dragon.

I'm not crabbing or anything, I can always get another dragon. Kinda sucks that I've had the same one all these years and gotta bond a new one now, but with the new magincia market they're not exactly hard to come by. just wierd.

Happened to me two times sofar...what happens is most likely that your gd when you logged didnt insta log as your logout time was overlapped by the serverdown..so your drag was still there...then he prolly went wild and was killed..or just disappeared...A drag of mine was once saved by a guild mate mine when he just simply tamed a wild GD with the name of Big Red

Yeah, it went wild. It might still be in the area somewhere but if you can't find it then it's gone. Time to go hunting for a new pet.

This has been a known issue with server downtime ever since they introduced the "empty pet auto-stabled on logout" feature.

Simply, the server downtime is just a backup, and doesn't actually log you out until the server goes down - then the server restores from backup at the point where the backup finished (And the pet is still out). So, the pet is left wandering, like in the old days, and will eventually go wild. In fact, if there's ever an actual server CRASH, you can lose your pets the same way, if you were logged in with your pets at the time of the last backup completion, then logged out between the backup and the server crash. You might come back a day or two later, and find yourself standing in a dungeon, with your pet long dead or gone wild (and despawned)

Even though it's been this way for years, some people still manage not to know about this quirk of the system, and probably several dozen pets are lost this way each year.

Basara is correct.

You have to stable your pet before the server stops saving. If you wait until server down, when the server comes back up your pet will still be standing there ownerless (because you aren't logged on anymore)
It's easy to miss the server message so knowing your server's down time is wise.

Well at least server downs now a days are very short, so I usually wait, relog, and fetch the pet.

Return to the area you were hunting before server down, there's a strong possibility the pet is still there.

I'm not sure if the server line thing still happens if you cross it when server down happens but Petra might be right... just for the heck of it go look...
But next time... if you are on and server down happens stay that few minutes its gone and relog in. Your pet should still be in the same location when you went down, if not its a good idea if you have a pet ball on your G Dragon anyhow go to inn, log out and back in pet should show up... but just in case look in stables again... if not there use the ball to call him.

Pet bugs have been around for years, I lost a very awesome pvp dragon couple years ago, was in a house of a friends he decided to take down house with us in it and dragon went poof , gms said sorry nothing they could do that was 4 years ago, whats funny is each and every char on that account when I log in that dragons name pops up still.

Not a bug. If the server goes down (either for maintenance or due to a crash) you need to log back in as soon as it comes back up to keep your pet. If you wait hours and hours then your pet is going to go wild waiting for you.
