Has anyone claimed an AOS gift pick AFTER applying a name change token ? I need help

This question is for either an experienced player who has already gone through it, or for a developer to answer it (since they know how the game works....).

I thought about writing a support ticket to make sure but I do not know whether it would be really the place for such an information for me to get.

I want to make sure I do not make mistakes or mess up.

This is the situation.

I still have an unclaimed AOS gift pick (http://update.uo.com/design_434.html) from 2003.

I have the gump to claim it that comes up upon logging in but until now I have chosen not to claim it yet. That is, I have the right but I have not yet used it.

Now someone asked me to claim that gift for them (the gift Item #1 is tradeable) but of course, to make it more meaningfull to them, they would appreciate if I first changed the name of my character that has the AOS gift pick available, into a name that they want to make the AOS gift meaningfull to them. This is possible using a name change token.

That is, I would first change the name of my character that has the AOS gift pick available, and after having changed the name I would proceed to pick the gift so to have it in the new name, not the old name.

I have never done it before so I am not sure what could happen while getting this done.

That is, how does the game engine deal with the name change token ?

To my understanding, the character stays all there with all belongings, skills and everything, only the name changes.

But will also my AOS gift pick gump remain after applying the name change token and change the character name ? Or will the game engine somehow see it as a "new" character and just void and null my AOS gift pick ?

Will I be able to log in my current character, leave the AOS gift pick gump up and showing, apply the name change token and then select the AOS gift pick without ever having to log off and log back in that character ?
If so, will the AOS gift come in the new name or in the old name ? I guess it depends how the game engine handles things which I have, obviously, no clue.

Or will I have to first apply the name change token, then log off the character and then log back in and then apply the AOS gift pick ?
But in this case, after I change the name with the token and log off and then back in under the new name, WILL the AOS gift pick gump reappear with the newly named character or will it be lost because it was somehow tied up to the old name even if I had not picked it yet ?

Bottom line is, is there any players who has already done this and can tell me their experience or is there a kind Developer who can reassure me how the system works and that I can get this thing done with no worries ?

For one I wouldn't pick the gift right after the name change, but wait at least for server down - this seems to be valid for many operations involving character status changes.

Just from a technical perspective --- since the player name updates within the Paperdoll and overhead of the character after using a name change token, the database updates dynamically in real time.

My assumption is that the name change token is coded to read the "current" name within the database --- it may even actually overwrite the character name completely without keeping a record history.

But then again, I'm not a developer for EA.....just my analytical point of view.


But, you can always play it safe for when servers go down. Can't hurt.

my friend let me select his AoS gift. i gave him a name change token and told him what name to change his character too. he did. he logged out and back in and was able to immediately select an AoS gift for me (half apron) in the color I wanted and it came with the new name.
yes, you use the name change first.
always a good idea to logout/login after such a thing, but not necessary.
yes, you're gift gump will come up same as before. the name change does not affect the character's id. yes, the AoS gift will reflect the new name of the character.

But, you can always play it safe for when servers go down. Can't hurt.

The thing is that it is difficult to time precisely the moment of the last save before servers go down for maintainance.

Now the time span is very short, much shorter than what it used to be.

I remember players playing wildly years back because usually the time in between the last save and servers going down was quite long (20 or 30 minutes ?) and it was enough time to play in a way that differed since one knew that servers would not save during that time period.

Now, it may be a couple of minutes if at all. Difficult to time it correctly and I could still run into nasty surprises if it gets saved up and things go bad. The margin for error is still high to my liking.

I'd rather have someone who did it tell me their experience or even better, have someone at Mythic who is knowledged with these processes ensure me that I won't run into trouble when doing it.

How long ago was this done ?

Just trying to figure out whether some changes to the game in the meanwhile may have made things different, today, than to when your friend applied the name change token and picked the AOS gift for you.

Ive done it.

Log in character.
Cancel AOS reward gump.
Use character name change.
Log character out so gump appears with login.
Log in newly named character.
Select reward.

No need for big dramatic 15 paragraph post about it.

Number one, it would not have been at server up but right before server down for maintainance, in that time frame after the last save and before the server goes down for good for maintainance. At server up after maintainance the server is saving and thus, if something goes wrong it gets saved for good....

Number two, I did think about it, but, as I explained in post #6 in my reply to ohmyGED, it is difficult to time precisely the moment of the last save before servers go down for maintainance.

That's too short a time, IMHO, which leaves too much room for nasty surprises.

At server up after maintainance the server is saving and thus, if something goes wrong it gets saved for good....

It's easy to time on siege, so it's probably like this on other shards but with more delay between. The second text ("the servers will go down shortly") I've never had ANYTHING save after it said that, though you usually only get a minute or so.

Actually, as I understand it, when the system message comes up players have "about" 2 minutes to log out at a "safe place" which to me it means that right past the system message, some time (about 2 minutes), is granted to players to reach a safe place and log out safely (and 2 minutes is reasonable as they could need walking if they are in a Felucca dungeon). Safely means to me, that their logging out "safely" after the System Message initially came up, will be saved....

Hence, that time frame allocated to players to safely log out is still saved by the server.

And it makes sense to me, if it was not saved, there would be no reason at all to warn players to go seek a safe place to log out before the server goes down for maintainance.

Therefore, the warning system message is NOT when the server stops saving but merely a warning to players to remind them that the server is about to go down and to allow to players a short window of time (about 2 minutes) to either recall or walk (should they be in a felucca dungeon) up to a safe place and log out, and their action STILL be saved by the server.

Then the server goes down, abruptly.

I am sorry, but the time window, as I said, between the last save and the going down to maintainance is way too short for me to risk trying anything and, besides, I really can have no clue when exactly the last save is applied for me to try that out.

I did give it a good thinking and ended up deciding it was not worth the risk.

So you are NOT trying to JUST change the name for him. You are trying to time the server save? Why? If it does not save the name it will not save the reward item.
I think the only reason some one spoke about the server down was to wait till the next day AFTER changing the name to claim the reward, but not during the server save.
Then there was confirmation that no wait was needed at all. That you may claim the reward directly after changing the name.

If if you said yes you did it yesterday and it worked he will probably most likely say "well the server got reset, with all the new patches it might screw me over".

If you do it rightnow while he's watching your character to change name and claimed an AoS rose with the new character name, he will probably go "well maybe it only worked because your name is not popps, so I dont want to screw myself over I will wait" logs on stractics popps: is there anyone else that just did it with the same character name as mine and on the same shard I want to do it on, on the same facet, same subserver, same tile in the city... do you have to be in a safe log out location? do can you do it on a female character? is your character an elf? a gragoyle? Do you have to be naked and cannot be mounted when you do the name change? or do you have to do it in fel side to work?

It's not hard to "time" server down. Ever since 1998 when we used to do "server wars" that's when the message "server is going down shortly..." appears which at the point cuts out all saves and everyone online will go to brit graveyard and start PKing each other and not worrying about statloss if you do go red (it was so freaking fun). I have demolished my keep right after the said message came across with all my arties all my belonging lying on the ground just to see if I can fit a castle... and I did it TWICE (i know to popps its not enough and every worst possible things will always and only happen to popps).

Maybe we should make posts like

Popps: "I need help!!! Has anyone done a shard xfer after sex change and name change? and sex and name change again after you arrive to your new shard would you still be able to then claim an AoS reward?"

Poster 1: Yes it will work

Just friggin do it before that time unless you're trying to do something tricky to call and pancake to CS about and get free time or exploit something, because that's what all your questions make you seem like you're doing. Your behavior is so sketch it's redic.

I posted the first out of the 8 legit questions I am going to post today (1 for early morning 2 for breakfast, 2 for lunch and 2 for dinner, and one more before I go to bed. So I will only have 7 more questions I have to ask tomorrow on stractics and take away a few complain posts I was going to post today... and they didnt try to help me like I am weird or something. *******s.

I ask because I dont want to screw myself over. I never listen to what people have to say because they always try to **** me over. I still ask because maybe there will be nicer guys to help me, but yea I wont believe whatever they said tho. They are trying to **** me over and its too risky and I dont want to screw myself over.

Wait... when you do it did you do it on west coast shard or east? Can I do it on a Japanese shard? What shard is it? Was there a publish within the last 2 weeks? When you did it were you wearing a purple/yellow trick or trick cloth made robe? How about your total skill point? Can I do it if I have different character name than you? Were you on a gragoyle when you did it? And when you did it were you flying and flapping your wings? or were you just standing still? Were you sitting down? A stool or a chair? Can I do it while sitting on Lord Brit's Throne (replica)?

And when you called customer support were you calling from a land line or a cellphone? Can I do it with skype? Have anyone did it over skype? And was the rep who you talked to a male or female? Was he/she single, married or divorced? How many rings did it take for the rep to pick up? If the rep waited for 7 rings then picked up my call can he still help me?

Well I think I will just not do anything, I dont want to screw myself over simply because people answered my questions... Yea I will ask about it again after the weekends. Oh wait can I do it after the 2nd Sunday in December?

Just wanted to add that I was able to get through all of the process like a charm and that it worked perfectly.

I was able to change name into the desired one, then log off and then back in and claim the AOS gift pick under the new name without an inch of a problem.

I then traded the AOS gift carrying the desired name, to the person who asked it and everyone was happy.

Bottom line is, as of today (when it was done), the process works and allows to get a brand new AOS gift under the new, changed name if one still has an unselected AOS gift pick available.
