Not sure where I got it. But lately I try to surf the net and it brings up. 'web page cannot be displayed" . Then after a few tries it would work every once in awile. Now I get on my main computer and it will just freeze.

So then I try to go to yahoo mail, but it goes to a page that just looks like yahoo mail. Up in my header it says something different and my log in picture does not show.

I call the bank and theres charges I didn't make on my card I use on the internet. So not sure if my accounts work or not my cmop will freeze trying to go to different pages, and now I'm afraid to put in my passwords. Not even sure if my stuff is there or if they were even after uo accounts.

Gonna contact norton tomm if I can my dad said they can check it by remote. Gonna look into a new computer on friday if I even have accounts to play!!

Sounds like your hosts file has been messed with to redirect you.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

look at the hosts file with notepad.

Delete anything except the reference to 127.0.0.1

Let's hope for the best. See what the problem is. If it worse case, pixels are replacable. The community will come through. If you are indeed "hacked" I would worry about that card.

That sux Calibretto :(

Hope ya didn`t get robbed in UO and its just a credit card thing. At least if its a CC thing it can be easily dealt with.

In the future I would recomend Mcafee. Don`t hafta use the whole suite, just site advisor and virus scan. Its intercepted things that I actually accepted.... I`m really good at staying away from bad sites and whatnot but it happens to the best of us. I had some bad luck with Norton, Mcafee hasn`t failed me yet in over 6 years. *knock on wood*

Best of luck to ya, hope ya get everything sorted out.

Best advice is to only use credit cards for online things.. most companies allow you to dispute dubious charges and eventually you can get you credit back.

Debit cards.. you're screwed for the most part.

Not true, if you use the debit card as a CC, they will go through the process and you have the same protection.

BUT... the difference is: With a CC, you're not responsible for the charges until they complete their investigation. With a Debit Card, you don't get the money back until they complete it, which is often 2-4 weeks.

I've had the opposite experience, McAfee has does nothing short of bog down my system and give a million false positives and then miss the real stuff.

I'm not really a big fan of Norton Either, recently I've become quite impressed with Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free and integrates seamlessly with your OS, which is more than any other non-MS AV will do.

Moral of the story though Cal: Don't surf for pR0n with a browser that allows active-x or java stuff. I prefer the old mozilla firebird browser for all my 1337 pR0n surfings. :)

Didn't know that.. was going off what happened to a relative of mine. I only use a prepaid CC for online purchases, saves me a lot of potential hassle.

That really sucks.

Phishing sites are everywhere now.

If you are able, run this virus scanner, it does it over the net and is free.

http://us.trendmicro.com/us/housecall/

It will tell you what viruses you have and what folder they ar elocated in, if I remember correctly, it will allow you to quarentine them in a folder which renders them useless. If it cant, you at least have their location on the hard drive you can go to and manually delete them.

If they are running in the RAM though, they may be able to restart themselves, so be sure to CNTRL - ALT - DEL and shut down any processes that you dont recognize before starting the scan.

Good luck.

Damn man that sucks. Hopefully you won't have any issues with charging back the cc stuff.

Lots of good advice in here. Worst case scenario, reformat and start from scratch. And everyone, make sure from then on you have good anti-virus software, and update windows regularly.

if you can, do a complete reformat to see if any hardware was damaged. the freezes could also come from a hardware problem (even thoo thats very unlikely). that way you can see if you really need a new comp.

if they indeed touched your uo thing, im not sure if id say that was good or bad. if they did, you could most likely find out who they are and with the cc stuff they did, you can also press charges against them.

if you get a way to icq set up and need help, just icq me and ill try my best.

That Sucks, merry Xmas...

I really have not a clue about PC's but when I had a similar problem I started the system in Safe Mode and just did a revert. Windows XP lets you basically back up your pc to a date, just go back before you had the problems.

Gluck and cya in game soon!

Reverting to a restore point doesn't uninstall any programs that were installed, it basically reverts drivers and system changes. It may help if something copied itself to a system32 directory, but usually the viruses make a copy of themselves into the safe mode storage location because those are typically off limits/harder to scan for AV.

I always just turn my Restore Point settings off, in all my years of doing tech support I've only had 1 instance where a restore point actually helped. I'm willing to do a reformat for 1 case in a blue moon vs the loss of disk space and the potential virus cache.

If somebody good at removing viruses were there, there are tons of things that could be done.

But since they're not, the best way to be sure is to reformat. All the advice, second hand, could make him miss something obvious (to somebody more familiar) and leave him just as bad off as now. Worse even, since he could think it was fixed and carry on.

what good would that be without someone who can tell you for 100% sure that he detected each and every harmful file and that there werent created any duplications or jumps?

you can copy any personal folders to a cd or something then you must reformat.

since they have your credit card you must reformat. you cannot trust that some kind of key logger is not still on your system or browser.

just make a backup of anything that you cannot lose then do it.

I don't see what you're getting at.

I'm saying he should reformat.

Sorry just got my computer to work again. Seems we recieved a letter about three weeks ago with a check made out to me for 70,000. I knew it was fake right away. But seems my wife wanted to check it out so she went to a web page included in a letter with the check. hahahahahahahaha.

Well anyway I'm out about 1200 and a missed truck payment. Don't think they were after my uo account. I got norton to fix my computer by remote. But I restarted and re ran norton and it says it deletes the trojan but I restart and rerun Norton and it says again that it deleted the trojan.

Thanks for all the help. ( and good to see you shaka) Going to maybe get a new computer tomm. (One my wife can't use) ^^

I am glad that yall got it all straightened out, and that you will be returning...after ya get your private computer room, set up. :)

In our house it is the opposite. My husband is new to computers and he just blew $$$ getting his laptop fixed the past two days. Seems he clicky on the flashin memo that said he won 1k gift certificate at walmart ...he opened it up and his entire laptop when to hell, froze up and crashed and burnt.

I joked and told him to never *pick up stranger cuz he could get a virus*

haha :)

I do not let that man, anywhere near my desktop computer, I have enough issues dorkin with my own computer, myself !

At our house I'm the one that has to deal with any virus we might pick up, though over the last several years all we've had are false alarms. Terry has a healthy case of paranoia and doesn't open anything, ever. An attitude you might consider nurturing in your spouse?

You definitely do not need a new computer. You do however have to reformat. As it is you really should reformat almost once a year to make sure it is running at its peek. Once you reformat you are running a clean slate, just reinstall UO and get back here.

No wanting a new comp due to a virus. But due to the fact that I run on a seven your old DEl with an intergrated graphic and sound card.

Is this a decent computer for gaming these days?

amd athlon II x2 215 dual core processor

2.70 ghz
400 mhz system bus
6gb pc2 ddr2 sdram
ati radeon hd 4350 graphics card with 512 mb ram

and windows 7

On a side note anything special to set windows 7 up for gaming?

And the graphics card on this comp has more ram than my current computer has all together.
