Stygian and Medusa have three green crystals on the ground near the altar that turn red, what are these all about?

Those encounters are instanced. Up to three groups can have have their own Medusa going at once, one crystal turns red for each instance going so if there are three red crystals you have to wait for a group to finish before you can go in.
I thought it was some sort of a tiered thing. I swear when I come out the second one is lit up and the first one is green. That must mean that another group is in there and when I come out, the first instance goes green again.
