UO Stratics has learned that Ultima Online will be the first online game to receive the Game Developers Choice Online Awards Hall of Fame award. This award recognizes a specific online game that has resulted in the long-term advancement of the medium, pioneering major shifts in online game development and games as a whole.

According to GDC Online Awards:

Electronic Arts’ Ultima Online, the Origin-created game that is now the longest continually running massively multiplayer online game in history, will be honored with the first ever Hall of Fame award for online games.​

Interesting how, of the eleven members of the "Advisory Committee" for the awards, five have have been directly involved with work on UO, whilst one other works for EA...

...but hey, any publicity is good publicity and UO is widely praised for kick-starting the subscription MMO scene.

This post cracked me up. This week I've guilded a slew of returning players and brought them to their first EM Event tonight. These are guys who have been away from UO for 5-7 years or so. They were blown away by the turnout and the event itself! More and more young players keep turning up so yeah, no one wants to play it.

Just cause they were involved doesn't mean it isnt true.

Honestly though, it does deserve some kind of hof award. Its the oldest mmo still running.

Congratulations Ultima Online !!!


Not because I play it, but because I think Ultima Online truly deserves this Award.

No other game out there has done (and is still doing) so much for the onlinr gaming industry. They really made the right choice here, IMHO.

I hope that this very important Award will work as a springboard to bring more resources and investments into the game (a new expansion to bring new players to UO ?) and make it live a second youth......

I also hope that this Award will be given as much advertisement as possible online and on games' magazines so as to help bring new players or returning players to Ultima Online.

Long live Ultima Online !!!

Ultima Online simply deserved this Award, IMHO.

I cannot possibly think of any other game out there, everything considered, that really might deserve this important Award as Ultima Online.

Other games may deserve other types of Awards but this one, seemed to me just the one fit for Ultima Online.

Ultima Online did way more than that.

Before Ultima Online hardly anyone would have bet on the profitability of online gaming.

After Ultima Online the gates were opened and a flood of Online Games came in (some good some not...).

But it was Ultima Online which broke the ice and made it possible.

This Award could not possibly not recognize the importance that Ultima Online had to start an industry, IMHO.

And, I hope, this Award will work as a springboard for Ultima Online and that, together with increased resources and investment in the game it will take Ultima Online to live a second youth.

It is an important recognition, let's hope it has come to do good to Ultima Online.

UO has done something else important as well. It was one of the first video/computer games to show that video games can have a commercially viable lifespan well beyond two or three years. There was a time in the industry when no computer game over a couple of years old would be supported, computer games went very quickly from the top ten shelf, to the discount bin, to the local landfill.

Now there are lots of games that continue to be sold and supported that are a decade old, or even more. Computer and video games no longer die when the technology they were created for becomes obsolete. The really popular games these days rarely become abandoneware, no matter how old they are.

And UO was also one of the first computer games to have a real modding community, for better or worse. They all started off as cheats for UO, but when the UO Pro program was started, that was pioneering, it was one of the first official recognitions by a gaming company of the modding community that had developed around it's product.
