So sad that the only form of pvp some people have is hoping to verbally badger you into saying something inappropriate in general chat, so they can page. Below, I will try to guide novice gen chat duelers into not falling prey to the beast!
Tutorial for all newbie gen chat pvpers:
When someone you're talking to in gen chat says your name followed by something along the lines of "please don't talk to me that way", they have officially started the process of being able to page on you. Keep your attacks non personal, if you still feel the need to pvp in gen chat. Don't include the name of character with a derogatory remark. Don't use the dreaded "r" word because 1) it should never be used anyway and 2) it's auto 3 day suspension. When you see the phrase above "please don't talk to me that way" directed at you, be cautious! Chances are you've stepped over the line, and a savvy gen chat pvper is about to pk you!
Do not try to match wits with known gen chat pvpers. You are only a gm skill gen chat pvper at best, and some of these people are 120 skill. They'll trick you into saying something personal (real name, location, irl threat, racial slur) and then pounce on you. Don't play their game!
If you feel the need to engage them because they repeated call you out in the "gen chat arena", then laugh at them. Call them a bad pvper, or a trammie. Keep it safe until you get your feet wet. Try not to swear. Not only does it show them that they've gotten under your skin, but also it screams lack of education. Needle them with the little things like spelling errors. You get better "gains" with those. You don't need to stay at gm skill forever. One of my favorites is targeting the "you're, your" and "they're, there, their" grammatical errors. It's just a win/win when they try to combat that. They are already leery because they know other gen chat patrons are watching, and they don't want to look ignorant with a botched spelling response. Plus, you cannot get paged on for correcting spelling errors. It's your way of Cleaning up Brit!
It would be nice if the GMs kept logs to see how often the Legendary Gen Chat pvpers try to entrap novice gen chatters. You would think a GM would crack down on the instigators who "flop" when barely being touched (basketball reference). Alas, it is what it is, so tread lightly when encountering one of these people.
Oh, and to last night's GL gen chat and stratics hero who failed on all levels...
