Personally, in my reality they are sometimes paranoid schizophrenics yelling in the public transportation. If I had to be offended by the deluge of bad words coming then, I would have to stay at home in my bubble.
This doesn't mean it's normal that players talk badly in public chats, but when it happens, it's not the end of the world. A permaban for that when the cheaters are running free, it's pathetic. We all know that the worse players are those provoking others to do the bad things, knowing very well who and how to push to the fault.

It very well may be your reality, it is a certainty that chat abuse happens, it is why this thread was made. BUT that does not mean it is how things should be and it certainly does not mean that something should not be done to change it.

There are a lot of things that are unacceptable in society, that does not mean we just stand by and decide to accept it.

Oh ya? So if you came across a 6'9 black man at the bus stop who was yelling out obscenities you surely would go up to him and politely ask him to stop because the language he is using is not acceptable in society, right? If you can ignore it in real life you can ignore it in a video game.

This is what i was getting at. As kids we said horribly disgusting things all the time, just to outdue each other, things an adult would probably be sent to a shrink for. So horrible language was the norm. I just say this becuase younger people are a decent percentage of the game.

In real life now, if i go out in public im sure to encounter a few homeless yelling and screaming obscenities (because they are insane) but really whats worse are the sane people begging for money, or ones who might actually do you physical harm. If you presented any of these people to police, the officers would just laugh at you, because they have more important things to do. At least the stuff that goes on in UO presents no real danger.

Now i know everyone are from different walks of life, but many many people play the game, so some are bound to offend others. Its one of the things you just have to put up with.

Like many have said before, theres the ignore feature, theres even the "filter obscenity" feature, which you can even Add words you dont want to see. I think UO has provided everything they can to meet everones needs on this issue. If this were a feature of real life, i admit i would probably use it at times, just like i do put people on ignore, and leave general often, and go to another one, or none at all.

Actually sweet heart I would, I wouldn't smack talk him or threaten him but I would certainly ask that he take it else where or ask if he could tone it down cause I don't want to or need to hear it.

If he continued and was then threatening towards me I would simply call the police and report it. Just as I would page a gm.

I am not the type of person who just stands by and accepts things especially if I know they are wrong.

As for the yelling out obscenities maybe the bus just ran over his foot?

If the bus just ran over my foot I'd be yelling some obscenities myself and I'm a 5' foot 5 white woman.

'Course I suppose you'd also be too scared of me to bother to find out why I was yelling obscenities at the bus stop.





By the way I support freedom of cursing in gen chat EXCEPT FOR THE 'C' WORD, referring to a female's anatomy.

I think that word should be added to the ban list with the 'ass' and 't' words.

On the other hand when I hear someone use it in-game, it informs me that they are the lowest form of gutter trash in the game, and I, like they will eventually learn, the rest of the world, don't need to ever hear another word that might come out of their mouth, so they go on perma ignore.

Never mind, let's NOT put the 'C' word on the ban list. I like to be forewarned which people online are a total waste.

I wouldn't care in the least bit why you were doing so. First of all it's none of my business, and second of all I have no right to tell you how to speak or act as long as it isn't causing harm to anyone.

i'm offended not by potty mouths, but when someone kills me leaving my entrails all over the ground, and then picks each and every piece of armor and gold off of my decaying skeleton.

every time this happens i curse and swear hoping they have spirit speak and then say fuuck it when i realize its just a game.

... but i still feel like i have been harassed, so i report my killer to the gms every time this happens.
