LOL!!! Im not laughing at you but @ the link so please take no offence :)

Wow and all the RG fans thought his new game would be more about UO and this is so not.

The Ultimate Collector Facebook game Richard Garriott's newish company Portalarium announced today is a front to test technology that will power his new Ultimate RPG - a spiritual successor to Ultima Online.
Maybe a succesor but defintly not spiritual or ultima on my book :(

Ultimate Collector resembles an early Sims game, both in colourful look and in tone. Avatars scour the game world one flea market or garage sale at a time, acquiring and renovating objects to turn into valuable collections to either sell or to decorate their homes with.
If I wanted to play the Sims game I would. Why play a similar game that looks like the Sims and feel like the Sims when you can play a better version of the Sims by EA. :( Trust me I'm no big fan of EA but c'mon now ....

Ultimate Collector - Portalarium

Ultimate Collector

The first social media game based on shopping and collecting!
Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale takes collecting to a whole new level of fun. Start first with a basic home and yard and then begin your journey to collecting and shopping nirvana. Search newspapers for that unique item that will complete your collection. Hold a garage sale at your house to bring in some cash. Add patio furniture, a bird bath and bouncy castle in your yard to add to its curb appeal. Visit other garage sales to complete your collections.
Search for practically anything: teddy bears, tool kits, Barbie dolls, historic sets of armor, weapons, electronics and much, much more. Share you collections with your friends and show them off inside your home.
But Ultimate Collector is about more than just collecting. It's about decorating and growing your home and impressing your friends. Place your treasured collections in special display cases inside your home. Purchase larger pieces of property to increase the size of your house. Search other garage sales to find that perfect decoration. You'll be the talk of the neighborhood.
Ultimate Collector is truly a first of its kind experience in social network gaming.

Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale is from legendary game maker Richard Garriott his team of experienced designers. Ultimate Collector: Garage Sale will be a PC product and available on Facebook in the first quarter of 2012. It will be available on other platforms/devices later in 2012.
  • A collecting and shopping social media game
  • From hall of fame designer Richard Garriott
  • Decorate your own house and show off your collections
  • Shop and collect from garage sales, markets and auctions
  • Go shopping in-game at nationally known retailers
  • Playable on a PC and available on Facebook in first quarter of 2012

Wow and all the RG fans thought his new game would be more about UO and this is so not.
He said in a previous interview that this game was one of the ones they were using to build the technology that the UO-esque game would be based off. This, obviously, is not New Britannia.

And if you don't think itemization, collection, homes, and more importantly how it's handled technically isn't a big deal in UO.. Well.. Can't help you there.

It's a development stepping stone. Being able to handle large quantities of just item data through a web-based application fluently is a big, big step.

I agree, this game isn't for me.. But I recognize the value in having made it.

Incidentally, I LOVE the new site design..

Oh, and for the UO thing..

http://www.portalarium.com/index.php/products/ultimate-rpg

Pretty cool that he used his new family crest (His wife's family crest, combined with the silver serpent, making their own) as an emblem for the game.

[Edit] And if you watch the changing text on the main page for Ultimate RPG, you get..
Thirty years have passed since the beginning

Hundreds of thousands of battles have been won

Millions of imaginations have been sparked around the world

But the ultimate portal is yet to open

The ultimate story is yet to be told

Look it's fine if he wants to test other sort of games for his "Ultimate game" he is making but to lump it in the same catagory under the "Ultimate" catagory is going a bit far.

Like I said if I wanted to play Sims I would. This is just a cheap version of it. I know some are his fans and cheerleaders but to lump this in the same catagory that leads into a UO succesor is crap.

Testing can be done on his end and then do a beta test of some sort. I just see the same tabula rasa road trip of not actually finishing game because he will follow that path. Lets make a game, scrap it...lets do it again but this way, scrap it,... ok lets try it again but add this from the first but this from the second, scrap it...ect ect ect... 7 years later.....then it equalled a 100 million dollar epic failure.

Anyway I said my peace on it but I hope this new venture he is doing is not going to lead the ultima fans down a failing path. Uses his fame and comes up with a garage sale game. Go team Ultima :)

wth happend to Lord British, space dementia, crack, mental breakdown?

I am taking with a grain of salt, but geez, if this is the building block that will be the spiritual offspring of UO, than religion is dead.

what he should do, is make a game like Mortal online but with $$$ if he want the spirit of UO.

NO insult to the man intended but I want whatever he is on.

Any way, saw another thread about this but could not hold it back any longer.

ladies and gentlemen Richard Garriott's mind has left the building.

You're not looking big picture and I am guessing have not read the article?

Each of the games so far have been aimed at accomplishing certain goals, testing coding to handle certain situations. It's like each of these games, beyond the revenue they are generating, have a piece of what will eventually become the Ultimate RPG.

It's not this game specifically, but this will allow them in a way to test housing, dynamic placing of objects, storage of the information of that stuff and things like avatars. It's a small step with the eyes on a larger prize.

If any of you had just cliked the right links, you may have arrived to the "New Britannia" Project page.

There you can find this text:

From "New Britannia" Richard Garriots Portalarium web site page:

"Today, with my new company Portalarium, and with the talents and skills of many who made Ultima an Ultimate RPG, we set forth to forge a “New Britannia,” a new world from scratch, internally self-consistent, deep and refined. We have lofty goals as an Ultimate RPG. An Ultimate RPG does not fear going where others fear or have failed."

This sounds like celestial music to me.

SO the backbone for testing, and making new tools, is based off a half arsed follow the leader zenga type game mixed with the sims? From the man who preached virtue?

I will just say it, if any part of the ultimate rpg of his, has this as its core, he is mad,

are we going to play on Iphone?

I did read the artical, makes me want to vomit.

I cannot stand facebooks, id stealing micro transaction games, not at all.

its like saying the he is going to use barbie meets pot farmer to test tools for a game that is going to be the be all end all rpg., give me a break, why is his brother the head of US NCsoft but he is stuck making zynga style games.

Get a real software engine and hire real network coders, if you want to make a real game.

Its like saying im going to take duck hunter and make fallout 4.

Here's the big picture:

People are laughing at him and think he's ****ed in the head after he's spent the last year giving speeches about how single-player games and MMORPGs are a thing of the past and he gives us...a garage sale game.

He's poisoning his own well.

He used to be an innovator and cutting edge. Instead he's chasing Zynga and trying to hype up a future game which isn't even in development.

His family crest is something I would have designed if I was part of a masonic serpentine penis-worshipping cult.
The game doesn't interest me.

The Ultimate Collector game seems well, lets just say something I wont be playing... but I will check it out to see what technology it is they are forming for his UO based game and go from there.
I love UO, but if Mr. Garriott comes out with something along the same lines, with updated graphics, etc... I cant sit here and honestly say that I wouldnt play it.

While facebook gives him an easily reachable group of people to market the game to, I just don't see it working for games that are more than casual time-wasters. Maybe it will be a success but if it is, I don't believe it will be in the way he envisages.

Then there's the whole having your account tied to a personal information hungry social media site thing going on (how many people here would still be playing UO if someone could just click your paperdoll name and pull up your personal details?). And we all know how creepy some users can be. So you must be kidding if I'd go anywhere near it. =P

I try to give anything related to Dungeons and Dragons a shot.

I tried the D&D Facebook game. After an hour, I realized that I would basically be doing the same thing for the next 40 hours. I walked away.

A intense and unique RPG could be done on Facebook, but if you have those kinds of resources and talent, you're probably better off throwing it together and putting it up Steam. I'm playing the hell out of Trine 2 and it was done by a fairly small company with limited resources, and even if it's not an MMORPG (there is cooperative play with friends) it's awesome.

I'm really dreading what the official Ultima facebook game is going to be like. I'd rather they take the resources and sink them into UO or do anything but a Facebook game. Hell, a beautiful side-scrolling Ultima game that looks as good as Trine would be better than an Ultima facebook game.

I did read and re read and investigate before i posted, I stand by what I said, I think its a huge blunder. Facebook is not the future but the past, and MMO's are not going to all be free to play in the future.

I see it an an investment, maybe a bad one.

I have done studies on MMO and I have played my fair shair.

I know he needs capitol to help his company, thats why they run some shady gambling games.

He also ranted about EA in his Ultimate RPG link and sounded like a jackass to me in doing so.

Eccentric ppl have a problem with EGO sometimes

OH and no ninja or elves, but bobbits, martians, and furries oh my.

I will always remember the old rpg's I play UO cause it came out, not because of ultima lore, could have been wizardry online, might and magic online, forgotten realms online, wasteland online, or any of the hundreds of CRPG's I played.

Whats up with his space company?

I hope he makes the be all end all MMO, if he does I will play it, but calling a small social media startup company the back bone, of the greatest MMO that will ever be made?

ohhh I do have freinds that will play his games, and I cant wait to have my facebook spammed by automated ads.....

Anyway mabey im getting to old for new games.

It could be that iphones, 20 year old JRPGs and soical media like facebook is all gamers have in the near future.

Its not just him lots of PC game moguls are jackasses at some point in their life. The US president of SOE that was responsible for NGE in starwars galaxies was arguing the same BS.

We will see.

I don't think a Facebook game needs to be some empty time-wasting grind.
They certainly are popular, and so they make up the bulk of what you have, because why gamble on making something deep, when you can make something shallow and addictive for a fraction the effort.
If memory serves, Dragon Age Legends is a good example of a pretty deep facebook game. Though honestly when given a choice between playing that, and Dragon Age Origins, I closed the browser after about 15 minutes.

The current format is for people to generate social networks within a game. Sometimes, networks are "imported" from elsewhere, but there's a lot of reliance on people meeting people and grouping up within the game.
A Facebook game generally attempts to import networks from Facebook. "Cirno clicked a cow, click her cow, too" is like an in-game "LFG Cowclicker", it just draws from an external pool.

Once again I find myself a little out of the loop..

What is a Facebook game?

You gotta go sign up with Facebook to play it I'm assuming..

So anyone that wants to check out RG's exploratory games Has to start with creating a Facebook account?

Somehow I can't believe I'm right about that.. I mean RG doesn't work for Facebook now does he?

Forgive my ignorance..

DID you or anyone you know ever run or mess with BBS on your computers back in the day?
I ran a spitfire mail server before the internet and used to have what we called door games, if you remeber door games, thats the best way i can describe facebook games.
Well exept they will post to all your freinds that they should play with you and that you want to give them a gift or something, then they sell info to companies that advertise on facebook, some flood your email. you also have to give permission for most games to your personal facebook info.

pretty much mini games with the graphics of a early 2000ish phone game, run off advertising and micro transactions.

MY version of Satan pretty much

Yeesh, he wants to call it Ultima Online 2, but move on from the Ultima lore that has already been established. No thanks. It's interesting that it's Facebook-based and he said it could be played on iPhones and iPads as well, but if you get rid of the Ultima lore I'm used to, I'll stick to non-Facebook games thankyouverymuch.
