Game locking up, hanging....

I was wondering if other people are experiencing this problem. I'm on Pac shard....

Over the last six weeks or so, both my husband and I have been having a problem with our game locking up, everything just freezes, and whatever the last sound was seems to just keep looping. Screen freezes, can't move mouse, can't do anything, if I go to the task manager and hit end program, it won't end program, have tried hitting end program multiple times, eventually it will shut down. Or when it happens it seems it is actually quicker to just wait it out, and eventually UO will shut itself down.

Originally this started happening during EM events with high mob situation. It will happen randomly on my computer or my husbands computer, but much more frequently on mine. But now this problem has been occuring more frequently over the last couple of weeks. Even something as simple as the spawn at serrado, fighting slasher, or corgil. One night this happened to me three times in a row just at serado. Last week UO was locking up even at the goblin spawn in SA. Also one of our guild mates mentioned that he was having a similar problem while trying to get keys for Dreadhorn. This was probably a good three weeks ago.



Last night we were at the Slasher, and this happened to both of us at the exact same time. Needless to say there was nothing but a couple of corpses and a laughing Slasher by the time we were able to reboot the game.

At one time while sending in the error report screen that pops up when something like this happens I saw mentioned, "application hang" (?). Of course I've never read thru all the information because I'm trying to get back into the game.

As far as the computers go, my husbands is still pretty new, around a year old, mine going on 5-6 years old. We both run antivirus programs, but different ones.

Is this happening to other people?
Does anyone know what is causing it or how to fix it?
I would really like to be able to play again, without constantly getting my game locked up. It is also making it pretty dangerous to do anything solo anymore.

Thanks in advance for any help, or ideas.

I have not noticed it at all in the Enhanced Client. Are you on Classic?

Yes we both use classic client with UO assist.

The enhanced client is jerky and makes me seasick. Don't like it, won't use it.

when mine does that, more so recently, I keep a document handy that shows a typ tracert to Google. mine usually drops out past my IP into the next few hops which is Their supplier (att&t/verizon). I also do speed checks, for bandwidth to say, (ex.Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test)

Ok, the above all sounds interesting, but I really don't know what that does or means. I have no clue what a typ tracet is... I understand (if I'm saying this right) that the signals, go thru many servers, and of course one or more can cause issues, but does this offer a way to fix the problem, or if you discover one not working is there a way to bypass it? I'm not computer savey when it comes to that sort of thing. I can do a speed checks, they are pretty consistant, but even if it is not, I don't know what you can do about that either.

Basically I don't know if it is UO causing the problem, or the internet, although I can say I have had no other internet issues that I'm aware of, only problems have been while actually in game. I thought maybe it had to do with UO doing their upgrades, but the time frame that we have been having problems, seems to be before the mentioned changes they were going to do, and is also occuring after the time that it should have been completed. Which is part of the reason I'm inquiring if others are having these same issues, and if there is anything we can do about it.

here's how I do it w/ google, go to a Dos command line(Start, Run,cmd )
type in Tracert -d 74.125.95.106
you'll see something like this:

6 5 4 66.xxx.xxx.x (x's inserted for identity protection)
4 7 7 66.xxx.xxx.xx
6 5 5 12.89.194.213
25 25 25 12.122.100.34
31 30 30 12.122.100.70
25 25 28 12.122.1.209

The first ones on the list will be your provider(in my case the 66.x #'s)
Next is Their provider(my 12.x #'s)
Those #'s at the start of ea. line represent how long it's taking - if one is normally 20, and is now 100, you're gonna get drop-outs/lags

Do it when it's working good to compare for later. It's just a tool to see where the problem may be. The actual problem may be in another state. If it stops at your provider, call them, past that it's kinda out of their hands, and yours. It doesn't 'fix' anything, but it can help to at least give you an answer to what's going on.

The speed test is a measurement tool to see if you're getting the speed you're paying for - if all numbers are high, this is probably your provider, and the speed check would show your speeds waay down.

Gotcha, thanks for the more detailed explanation, much appreciated. I ran the uotrace the other day, and the ping was definately much higher on the UO servers side, the first ones that came up in the routing which would be my side of the server all looked good, nice low numbers.

So I guess all I can do is hope they improve something down the line?
