There was a time when I kept a few but I realised they are just a novelty pet, never used them so released them all. Whilst they boast some admirable stats you literally cant do anything with them as they spawn 5 slot which can leave some very big holes in their elemental resists.

On the other hand the Cold Drakes that spawn from chests, in my opinion, are far more desirable. They have the same elemental damage output, spawn as 3 slots and with exception of Dragon breath spawn with a relatively clean slate.

Of course there are better Cold Damage pets out there, but I personally like the look of the Cold Drakes and there are lots of Hues to choose from.

The main thing I see the frost dragons used for regularly is the belfy, as it works better than a GD against the Belfry's GD.

Otherwise, people use cold drakes or the event Frost drakes, but there's the danger when people try doing the Belfry without using the feather, that you can lose the pet from lost loyalty trying to command it on/onto the platform. I had a fully trained cold drake go wild there, and had to retame it (luckily others were fighting the Dragon so I was able to isolate the drake and retame).

Whereas, if you lose a Frost Dragon, all you had invested was the tame.

And. strange as it may seem, there are people out there who don't like the training system, and prefer 5-slot heavy hitters they don't have to mess with, if only because they are low cost and low maintenance.

Try to get on with super overcaps in them, and keep that one. Check on the max of the overcaps and get just one, the best one and skill the overcaps. They are not too bad.

100% Cold Crimson/Platinum Drakes with Chiv+AI tear apart the Belfry GD, even in a 1v1. I run Consume Damage on mine, get him up on the platform with the GD, discord the GD, and watch my 100% Cold Platinum Drake tear him apart, without ever needing vetting from me. Can quickly solo the Belfry in 10 mins or less that way.

100% Cold Crimson/Platinum Drakes are easily obtainable, they spawn in Ice Dungeon, and start off as 2 slots.

And you missed the point of "easy to lose if you don't use the feather to get up top".

I almost lost my fully trained and scrolled drake with no warning that he was going wild until it happened. There was no indication that he had not been following commands. I've still not managed to get his skills back up to where they were before he went wild through training. Had it died while wild I'd have lost a YEAR'S GAMEPLAY worth of gold, in scrolls invested in it.

Not everyone has high income. The only time I had over 100 million gold on my account was when I cross-sharded a couple of rubble beds (that a friend left in his house when he left in the game, and gave to me) to Atlantic and sold them at a rares fest. Nearly everything else I have of value, has shard historical importance, and I'm not about to sell.

There's something to be said for having an occasional pet that requires little/no maintenance or training, at little to no cost, even if only 90% as efficient as something that you sunk a month of training and 50 million gold into. As, if something goes wrong (like the recent bugs involving pirates crossing server lines with pets aboard), what have you lost? You lose a GD or FD, You get upset, then go out to find a replacement if you already didn't have a spare somewhere. You lose a fully trained & scrolled pet - I've seen people rage-quit the game over.

Which is why it is inexplicable to me why, with so many Tamers in Ultima Online, and considering how devastating it is to loose a pet on which one has invested so much in THAT way, this issue has not been yet fixed for good....

I do not even know if the Developers are actively working on such a fix.... so far, I have read tons upon tons of Posts from players lamenting this issue but I have not happened to see one post from a Developer mentioning this issue lamented by players and that it is being looked at.....

    To me, it is inexplicable.....

I've lost so far two good pets... one was a midnight blue lesser I was training... fortunately I hadn't put any scrolls on him yet... I had just finished the first round of training and was working up to round 2... down with the evil mage. Then randomly without me even commanding my pet... just healing him... he went gray... It took me a bit to figure out what went wrong... but by the time I did it was too late... there was no getting the mage off my pet long enough to get it tamed again... I couldn't get the mage to leave it alone so all I could do was watch as he eventually killed my pet.

The second one was my beloved Pink Hiryu... fully trained and fully scrolled... I went to go to a player-run PEC event... I was running late... but I got him out of the stable ... fed it as always... hopped on recalled to the place got off and gave the kill command.... it went wild instead... 1 command.... 2 seconds after eating... and wild. There were about 15 people there... and sadly the RC and EVs made short work of my pet.... and I couldn't dispell them or get them away from him... so once again I was forced to watch a very beloved pet die... That time I was extremely angry.. so much so that I just recalled home and logged out.... didn't log back into UO for over a week... still pissed off about it to this day.

Pretty much told myself after that one that if I lose another pet like that **** it... I'm gone. Just one more nail in the coffin IMO ..... I swore I'd stick with UO to the bitter end... but seems to me that the DEVs want the end to come... and seem to be doing everything in their power to make that happen.... the more players they can alienate from the game the better it would seem.... see how far they can push us until we just give up and leave.

I've already found the replacement game to UO... I've been playing Black Desert Online and while it doesn't have everything UO does... It has enough that I enjoy it. Certainly looks better than UO. Has pets... has horses... has housing... though not as customizable as I'd like... and it has community.

The only thing that still keeps me playing UO is friends.

Personally, I think it's because I don't think the devs realize people can get pets to the belfry platform with NO ONE going up there (bypassing the need for the feather), and if they realized it was the main method used, it would be nerfed in a heartbeat as an exploit.

That, or they do consider it an exploit, but don't want to make any more players mad about the roof, after their fix to the fountain to prevent the "bagged parts" exploit eliminated the only way many were able to do it legally otherwise (building 4 full drains, but to only 3 or 2 of the closer exit ports, as 90% of the time the 4th port is too far for 1-2 people to get connected in 30 minutes).

And taking more than 2 people into the fountain is just insane... I've been in with 4 people and you could barely move at all with all the crap spawning continually and dropping stuff.

My secret for doing a solo fountain is to go in and just collect canal pieces for 9-10 minutes.
Then, Exit, and reenter however many times it takes to get the N & W drains to be relatively close.
Once you have that, use all the canal pieces you have already collected (that should have about 8-10 minutes left on them, at worst) to build 1 drain (if not 2) while your pet or summons kills more stuff to collect canals from.
After all, the items can be carried from instance to instance, and once the water flows the pieces placed in that canal don't poof.

It usually works, but occasionally the RNG is so out of whack you can't get the directional pieces your need, even with 10 minutes of extra pieces for the head start.

I've seen some Frosts prior to taming that were very close to 140 in wrestling and 1-4 other skills (tactics, parry, resist spells, magery), so those can be very nice "low maintenance" pets even after the taming skill drop. One of them had physical and cold resist in the 87-90 range, and the other 3 resists in the 57-65 range. I led it off and kept spamming people that they could tame it if they wanted, and where it was (south of Yew gate Trammel, at about the same latitude as the cemetary), but not sure if anyone did. If I'd had the stable room (and if my tamer/TH hadn't already had a nearly full beetle and no room in the house to unload at the time, as I was TH to collect loot for donation to the LA Player center), I'd probably have tamed it myself.

Next time you get a nice one like that let me know I'll come tame it. I'd love to have one on LA.

When I get a frost I usually yell about it in general chat and back up to lore it, so keep an eye out.

Though, the downright scariest one I ever saw was a non-tamable ancient chest guardian version. it was near max in everything and took 10 minutes and a couple of beetle rezzes (despite having consume running) to take it down.
