There is a plugin over at firefox called "Adblock Plus" Any website such as this that has adverts, it blocks the code completely, you never EVER see adverts on any website. To me, it is stupid for a message board to have adverts. I honestly didnt even know Stratics had adverts till this post, that is how good this plugin is.

Adblock Plus is the name. I suggest getting it.

You do understand that they have to make money somehow, right? At one time there was a Stratics Plus program where you could make a monetary contribution and would not see the ads and would have access to additional info/forums. I was a member and loved the program. Since it is no longer available (At least I don't think it is) I live with the ads. They are no different than MSN, Google, Yahoo, AOL and "insert site name/info service here."

To me it is almost like you are admitting to "stealing" the services Stratics provides? :stir:

(Yes I know the plugin is legal and as of this post I am not aware of anything in the ROC/TOS that speaks to this I am just sharing my opinion on the matter)

Petra,

sorry i had just closed out everything and did not notice.

this is the only info i can get from my temp files

cookies (not sure if these have anything to do with it)
trafficmp.com
bluekai.com
zedo.com

virus named by firewall
swif.k

flash named by firewall
cosplay.swf

I saved a copy to the stratics page as a txt file. I can send you if that helps but I looked in the page and it seems to be a rotator so I am not sure how that might help you.

You know a web site can be hosted for $6 a month right? And coding for php is easy, especially vboard, it comes pre-setup. I know this because I run a few web sites. Oh and no ads.

And yahoo, msn, myspace, facebook, ect, I dont see ads there either. I dont like to see ads, this plugin is perfect for me. If I wanna shop for something, I know where I want to shop, if I dont, as you said, Google. Not stealing anything, everything on stratics can be found on uoguide, minus the message boards and no ads, at least I think there is no ads lol. There is usually a very small area with a small tab that blends in that says ad blocked. If I click that tab it gives me the option to show the ad, one time, all the time ect.

Time for a little education.

All Adblock does is prevent you from seeing the Ad. Stratics still gets the CPM (which translates to credit per impression), you just don't see the ad. Meaning they still get the money.

So no, you're wrong.

Ohhhh more time for education.

Simple Web sites that don't require a lot of databases, VBB, etc. can be run for $6 a month. If you have a site that uses a lot of bandwidth, space, etc., you have to pay significantly more.

It costs even more when you own your servers, have them in a data center, because then you have to rent the data center space, and pay for someone to maintain them (There's a lot of maintence that would need to be done for sites like this and other MMO sites). Then, you also have to pay a significant amount per month for backup.

So yes, you could have a Web site for $6 a month, but with a site like stratics, bandwidth would be used in such a short amount of time, you'd end up paying more out the rear to pay for additional bandwidth.

And now you know and knowing is half the battle. Go Joe!

Actually it's database table size that's gonna be the real issue with a site like Stratics, the Forums alone are huge I'm sure. I pay $7 a month for web space that includes unlimited bandwidth and data transfer, about 150GB of hard drive space, but I'm limited on Database size to 100MB. I know my Guilds Forums are using about 4MB for about 2000 posts, so I can imagine what Stratics is using up for a DB.

In essence your really right though for a site with the amount of data it contains you don't have really much choice but to rent space for your own server, unless you are able to do so out of your own home and want to pay the horrid expense of a T1 or most likely for this many users a T3 or OC1 or OC12 connection.

Thank you for the education. My professional experiences is with sites hosted at Data Centers not maintained by myself. I have zero experience with ad generated revenue or how it works other than what I see on the sites I personally frequent.

I do understand it is a "numbers" game and I would think and am sure that the companies paying to be seen via this manner are fully aware that blocking occurs and don't care because they still generate sales.

Don't get me wrong I am no fan of ads and have never purchased a product or service because of a flash ad on my screen. However when I use a service at no cost to me, like the one provided by Stratics, I am not surprised by nor annoyed by the presence of advertisement. I simply use the "AdBlock" built into my brain and ignore them.

Happy Holidays!

I advise anybody who gets any type of mal-ware to fix it immediately as humanly possible. I just lost my old hard-drive from the product of laziness. Use Firefox for web browsing. Be safe and alert everybody!

My Avira fired off an alarm while visiting stratics. The only other sites I visit are name brand business partners. This is what I got

Virus or unwanted program 'HEUR/HTML.Malware [heuristic]'
detected in file 'C:\Users\Chris\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\399dqxp2.default\Cache\_CACHE_002_.
Action performed: Move file to quarantine

The Job of this malware is to download viruses and trojans.

Do you have a source for this?
Because it's the first time I've heard such a thing, and it just doesn't sound right to me.

More generally, and not directed at the above-quoted poster.

It bugs when people come here with a morally superior attitude about how they do, and others should block ads or whatever. It strikes a lot like coming here and flat-out saying "**** you, Stratics!"
I'm not going to argue moral stances on blocking ads or anything, but for crying out loud, would it kill you to be a little more respectful? I mean, you are using the services they provide.

I'd have to look to see. But from testing I've done with ads and ad block, regarding click per impression, not click thru, it will register the ads as receiving impressions. However, you won't get a click thru on them, so if you are getting paid through click thru, you would loose that.

EDIT: Apparently it depends on what type of ads you have running as to whether or not you are affected by AdBlock. If you have ads that will show regular images instead of flash when you have flash/java triggered as an ad, and it will replace those flash/java ads, you get the impression. If you don't have a non-flash/java ad, you won't get the impression.

And, no offense Kiminality, if every few months there wasn't an AVG or other virus warning regarding ads with Stratics, I wouldn't use Adblock here. As a staffer at one time, I was adament about not using Adblock except on specific ads I couldn't tolerate (I hate pop up Flash ads) Unfortunately, with the flash ads and javascript ads that have viruses in them, I don't want to compromise my system. For a lot of folks that preach adblock and adaware and noscript, the ads are a source of worry and virus prone.

What's more of a slap in the face, not using Stratics at all due to ads causing viruses every few months? Or using Stratics and just blocking the potentially malicious ads? Yes, folks are using the services of Stratics, you're right, but that doesn't mean they have to compromise their system every three months or so.

And, no offense Kiminality...
That's rare! someone says "No offense" and then doesn't go on to actually be offensive.

I pretty much agree with you.
My issue isn't with people adblocking, I can completely understand it. For every handful of rare adverts that aren't in some way irritating, there are dozens that try to grab your attention by every means at their disposal, and then there'll be something malicious nestled in. So at the very best you'll have something you can tolerate on your screen, at the very worst you'll have something harmful, but most of the time you'll have something just plain horrible.
So, yeah, I can swing with ignoring advertising.

But, there's a difference between between blocking adverts and preaching that everyone should.
You can even recommend adblocking in a way that's respectful.
I know, I'm wearing the badge, but I'm not speaking for Stratics or anything. I'm just a poster who doesn't have a terrible fondness for jerks

Yeah, on the one hand, if you care about Stratics, you'd want to not screw over its revenue. But, you can say the advertisers do a lot to bring that on.
But, at the other end of the scale is coming in here, effectively preaching how everyone should block the ads, which would probably result in a loss of revenue.
I can understand that, but I just have a fundamental beef with people being jerks.

While we're on the subject of adblocking ...

Some people just don't like being bombarded with ads for junk they will never buy / activities they will never participate in. Many people believe this world is already filled to the brim with advertising and don't care to see it when they are relaxing on their computer.

I know why ads exist on sites: I have used them for my own blogs/sites in the past. However, if it is a service I am offering for free and I find out someone is blocking my ads, I will not get upset: I block the ads of others sites.

You can't steal something that is free. An no one is forcing us to look at ads. I just wish I could block them in the real world.

With that said, I give another vote for Adblock Plus.
