Well what were having you do is open the Notepad Application as an administrator (This raises your security token on your computer)
in the Notepad window [top left] hit the File button and then hit Open, left click the grey box below the blue bar and to the right of the arrows. Hit Enter and you will see the "Hosts" file.

All you are doing is pasting 1 line into a text document so your computer knows to connect to that IP address and stop using the one that "Supposedly dead"

If anybody could find a workaround for a computer running on Windows Vista, that would be great - that's what my laptop runs on.

*Edit*

It actually DOES work for Windows Vista, too. However, on your Notepad window, you have to go to FILE and OPEN, and then on the left side I had to double-click "Computer" and then follow the path all the way down, as shown. Also, I didn't pay attention to THIS:

That little box defaults to "Text Documents" in Vista but you've GOT to change it to "All Files," as Gareth DID point out - I just didn't understand what he was talking about, nor did I pay close enough attention to his little screenshots, either :p

If anybody could find a workaround for a computer running on Windows Vista, that would be great - that's what my laptop runs on. I tried to do the same basic thing, but Notepad couldn't find "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" even running as Administrator. However, it would show up when I did a search in the Start menu, and when I opened the "hosts" file with Notepad, and put in that last line, it gave me this:
Working on it now

Edit the Hosts File

Non-frequent Edit
  1. Open Notepad with Administrative privileges by clicking Start, All Programs, Accessories, and then right-click Notepad and select to open as Administrator.
  2. Now that Notepad is open with Administrative privileges browse to (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc) in Notepad and open the hosts file.
Now you can edit and save the hosts file.

feel kinda silly for not figuring that out.... Gareth, you are a peach! :)

Emily, those instructions worked like a charm... the only stall I had was when I realized that, while browsing, the search thingie defaults to text files, so once I changed that to 'all files' it all went smoothly... good luck!!

Gareth, thanks again!!

*important edit!* I did not click that link... only opened notepad with admin rights and navigated to the file and changed it, and I could log in.... just went and read the stuff on the link and it doesn't appear that it's needed? I mean, it worked.. if I've put myself in danger of some sort, holler at me!

Oh, my gosh, thank you for pointing that out - it worked for me, too. I think you can say that this works for Vista as well, Gareth - just that neither of us payed attention to changing the little box to "All Files" instead of "Text Documents" :p so sorry about that, thank you very much, though!

(Bows to Lord Gareth) Bravo! This fix worked like a charm on my and my mom's Vista operating systems. It was great to be able to get back in game while the log in issues were still occurring due to the power outage situation. It was also wonderful to be able to see updates as to what was going on through UO's facebook presence. I am glad power has been restored and all is better now.

When should I delete that new line/server from our host lists?

Thank you, again, Lord Gareth!

Click Accessories
Right Click Notepad
Select: "Run As Administrator"
A Blank Notepad Document will open...

You're welcome
Now that UO has released a fix you can delete the line from your hosts list. If you cannot connect to UO after removing it then put it back in.

I have windows 7, and I followed the fix. Got it pasted in Hosts but still can not log in.

I noticed that at the bottom of the Host file on my comp is different then your post.

# For example:

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Notice that the # symbols are in front of the localhost addys, and the line localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself is added.

This 2012 thread is accurate in how to do the fix, but the address has changed again. The new addresses are:
107.23.176.74 login.ultimaonline.com
or
107.23.85.115 login.ultimaonline.com
