Fishing sillyness

Looking for something fun to do i decided a while ago to give fishing a new look. Waited patiently to get that uberrare 120 ps to give rare and legendary fishes a try.

First disappointement came from despite the 120 scroll i m still "fishing" more than ever the silly number of shoes of all kind... Too bad for the idea that an elite fisherman rarely get junk...

But what can i say about rare and legendary fishes ?? Using baits or not, with the new fisherman suit or not, the result appears to be the same :

Nada, zip, nichts, niente, nothing..... just a huge waste of baits and time.

I understand that those fishes shouldnt be caught every single minute but please guys, be serious... we already spent MONTHS in getting stuff for that... Dont wish to spend YEARS to get more useless baits and lava poles just to see nothing... and dont tell me about RNG or i ll get my gun out !!!

Just "broke" 6 lava poles in a row... thanks for the lava rocks but enough is enough....

Alike most of high seas booster the ideas are great.... unfortunately the implementation seems as poor on fishing as they are on other part of it...

I did pay for the booster to have FUN... not to waste my time endlessly...

I just can only agreed on most of it. I m fishing a lot these days. I caught a bunch of rare fishes (still missing some on the hard locations though) but the only legendary fish i ever caught is a 72 pnds Kingfish long ago...

Good to know that using baits doesnt help... I ll save mine then although i dont know what they will be good for; maybe for another cleaning ??

As there are other interest in fishing (white pearls, mib's) i ll continue to do so but surely at a very slow pace indeed.

I have 3 fishermen chrs. at various levels of fishing skills.

Prior to this last big mega patch publish, only the lower skilled chr. was fishing up lots of footwear *as he should, I guess cuz he still sucks at fishing.

My other two fishermen, AFTER this last patch publish
are now ALSO fishing up way more stupid useless footwear
than they had fished up prior to this latest patch publish.

Enough already with the stupid footwear, any fisherman worth his
saltpeter in any skill over say 80.0 should be catchin more
decent wanted fishes types than shoes boots and sandals !!
And any fisherman from 100.0 and up
shouldn't even catch
but maybe one pair of shoes a day !!

Of the latest expansions boosters, I only have one SA, on 4 accts.
I did not bother buying more SA,
it all just didn't interest me at the time, still doesn't.
I didn't bother to buy the rustic or gothic,
'minibite' upgrades either.

High Seas booster though, of 4 accts. I have/got 3 HS boosters !

HS has so much potential and it is like they suffocated it all up,
into some gigantic obstacle courses to run
just to DO/ACHIEVE anything
with it or to get from, point a to point b.

Now if I was a Sheltie, like my 2 dogs are,
I might enjoy jumping thru obstacle courses
and hoops, a lot,
but I am not a Sheltie dog ! LOL

They suffocated us on ship to ship fighting
via salt peter, blk pwd. potash, charcoal, lt h pwd charges,
*you have failed to make* when it takes so much stuff to make any of it
and all the skills one needs to MAKE anything ammo wonderous,
to fight HS battles ship to ship players to players.

Got fish quests, if ya get 10 of whatevers to turn in,
go here go there do this do that, etc.

Same with magic fish pies, mento sauces and the rest 1k and up
on reg. shards, 3k and up on Siege, just to make magical fish pies,
where the magic, per magic fish pies types,
does not last long enough in game, per say
to warrent the cost of the sauces and shrooms ya need to buy...
plus some rarer caught fishes for the even better magics magic fish pies
and ya got nearly the entire magic fishpie chefing, pie industry
about suffocated too.
Nothing should be TOO easy
but it all surely shouldn't be so bogged down, either.

Im one of the worst pompom wealders here. I love most things in UO..almost too much.
The HS booster was like made for me and in the beginning it looked like it was for lots of people. The guild was sailing and capturing pirates and got our Orc ships. But after a while we could not stand the salpeter mining the preparations and costs so we dont do that any longer. And we are old stubborn vets doing all sorts of crafting /bods/fishing grinding more than most players.

We also have been fishing like mad. I get the all 20 fish quests since a while so ive been fishing for sure. I get plenty of baits, I have the new fisher suit. But what a waste of baits! Had hoped for some trophys to sell on my fisher vendor but its too discouraging , ill save my baits. So I dont do that anymore.

Oh, and from the beginning I was going to make pies to sell. Then the ingredients to buy at the market was so expensive and the interest for the pies so low I had to get rid of them with a loss. Consept good but didnt work. (Cant check if the ingredient price has changed reacently, my fishers acc is blocked today due to account management disaster and I dont know what to do, hoping for son to help out after scool) So I dont mak pies any more..

Our guild also has been working hard on getting to fight Charybdis. Does anyone know why it has to be so hard ? We have been lucky at last, and fought one, The fight was different and fun the reward 1 piece of armour to split on the crew and some fish. I got yellowtail barracuda steaks hehe..the easiest one to catch at normal fishing without baits even.. We will do this one again as long as we can get more of toose oh so rare charybdis baits. But if there is no use to quest for other baits and people dont care about the fishing scrolls as they gave up on fishing.. I guess we will give up too..

I got more oracles of the sea than Charybdis baits so I tried to sell one. People has forgotten what both Oracle and Charybdis is, so no buyers. If they know, they want to buy baits with the oracle bc they know they might not find any to buy as people fish less and less.. I was going to try to sell an oracle cheap on my vendor, very cheap even..but the account is blocked *sigh* I guess thats what makes me so grumphy I finally told how I felt about fishing by now

I fish and fish and fish and never could get a scroll... I did quests all freaking day on and on and on and on..... never got a scroll more than 110... I started calculating the number of 110's I'd need to MAKE a 120... the number is astounding! Finally broke down and bought the stinking 120 scroll...

Fished and fished and fished some more to get to 120 skill... got stuck at 116.2 .... could not raise it no matter what... figured ok I give up.... bought SoT's up to 120 for insane prices that put taming scrolls and SoT's to shame and for what?????? Very few buy fish pies.... even fewer care about fishing.

Most folk just want to make money out of UO... and that they do. Sad.

So I have 120 finally and I figure NOW I can really fish... Guess not... like you all I get more boots and shoes now that I'm 120 than I got at 110!!! What's up with that?!?!?

At 110 I was fishing up Marlins, Yellowtails... Even Fire fish out of shame.... Autumn Dragon fish from Destard No problem...

Now at 120 I almost never get a yellowtail... haven't gotten a single Marlin... no Fire fish... it's like I'm suddenly reduced in my fishing luck.

And I hardly want to get into the cost of sea battles... I can hardly get folk to go Pirate hunting with me... though I desperately want to. No one wants to stand about on the ship for the 15 to 20 min it takes to sail from the Emporium to the Pirates. *sighs*

RNG? 120 fisher catching 3 footwear in a row. And as my luck is all three boots. Now wonder cannot hit the powerball with UO sucking up all that random chance luck.

Bait? 1800+ of a combination king, void crab lobster, golden, zombie and spring dragon fishing. Noticed while in the new fishing suit seemed to catch even less of the more common rares like autum yellowtail and holy without bait. Tossed the fishing suit back in the box and fishing Shame bridge while crabbing its length (two birds on stone that will end when Shame gets boost) caught three Firefish. A big deal when they are in a row. 3 of 7 caught while getting 6 Grim Cisco for quest. A bigger deal when in the suit earlier with 80 Firefish bait I caught a total of 4 Firefish.

I'm all about rares being rare. Dumb luck got me my 120 after I recovered from having to build upr from boat glitch sinking full of quest. Just that seems that RNG is real glitchy and I get no warm fuzzies in it. Good thing I enjoy the grind aspect. I along with others want the gypsy camps back to really push our luck.

Wanna spice up the fishing? Put the new item loot system on the Dredge Hook weapons and armor. Could have one spawn in each MIB chest also.

The RNG hates me in UO..

And the clicking to put bait on all the time just sucks..
Make it so i just perma bait the hook , and not have to each cast..
Unless i catch the stupid fish..

I agree about clicking the stinking bait! I wish there was a way to say "Hey I want to bait this pole and until I take the freaking bait out of my pack I want to KEEP using this bait." Some sort of bait on bait off sort of thing... The double clicking nightmare is such a pain! I said to heck with using baits. Besides after trying to catch holy Mackerels over and over and over... I found I have just as much "luck" getting them if I don't use any stupid bait at all.


Thinking of things you know what I'd like to see?

I thought of a use for those large fishing nets more than just "deco"...

How about you toss one of those babies in the sea and you bring in a haul that would be equal to a random casting of 120 casts... Throw it in ..... Wait a couple min and pull it back up... Or toss it in and it drags behind your boat for awhile and then you pull it in... only can be used out in the deepest parts of the seas... Might be nice... sure would be better than casting 120 times. Make it so you have a chance to gather up a big school of fish.... like you get 40 to 50 of one type and the rest of the "loot" is random... would be a nice use for the nets beyond just deco and would be a nice way to get a bunch of one kind of fish for the quests.

I hate the clicking involved with baits aswell. I gave up after 1 pot in shame.

I've trained another char to 110 fishing now and noticed an increase of footwear aswell. When i fish i usually drop the footwear into a bag on the boat deck. So far i never managed to fill that bag. The footwear started to decay within the bag long before the bag was full. I kept moving the bag every now and then so that the bag itself didnt decay. Now i need a second bag for footwear because i have over 125 pairs before the first ones start to decay ...

I'm a FLP fisher (Fishing at a Leisurly Pace) I fish while I watch tv.

And yes baiting hooks is nasty and tedious.. but anyone who's ever fished IRL knows baiting your hook is just gross, and takes a minute.. you have to kill that poor worm and slide it on the hook far up enough so it hides the hook and won't just fall off at the first nibble. Not my idea of fun actually. thats why I fish in Ultima now and rarely IRL..

But I did catch a 94 pound Marlin in Alaska last year!

I too struggle with fishing. What I do now is fish my arse off when I get motivated to do it. Still working on it.. I will be working on it for awhile... Could be 120 by now if I gave it my entire focus, but alas I cannot...

I am one of those who never fished until the expansion... so my motivation is a bit lacking...

It is on my list though... I did get a 105 scroll so far, and too many vol 4 books dredge hooks, etc

i couldn't imagine fishing without HS, and quite frankly don't know how you all did it before the expansion.

Drop bait on open hotbar spot. Set Hotkey like z because already have Left Alt + z for casting. Set bait spot target as stored for your pole. This bait spot can then have other bait dropped on the spot and reset target stored every bait change. Nice to have this z and Left Alt z setup. Saves wasting bait on shallow cast when crossing server lines.


Yet to see anyplace that clarifies the lobseter and crab bait. Seems you can either target your pole or target a stack of traps. Takes a bait per trap in the stack. WIth my bad luck yet to catch a rare so not sure what one the bait is to be used on.


I like spots I can trap and fish while they cook for a bit. Buc's pier and the first bridge in Shame. Buc's you can set out over 60 traps and fish either shallow or deep from the docks. Few dungeon stomps have trap fish areas that are very hassle free. Once Shame update hits will be spending more time in the mushroom cave. There needs be more piers put in like Doom Bell waters and Gravewater Lake. Garg lands fishing village has pier but is to high up. Can only drop a handfull of traps. If a sea serp is raised have to drag it to the beach if want to kill and loot it. There needs to be a Buc's type pier that is longer put in Doom Dungeon. Just make it out of bone like the Evil Furny deco. A place to dungeon fsih and trap that wont see the loot creture spawn update. In the end all the dungeons will get updates and will get fished as often as the Labrynth Rend shore.

None this would be an issue if the pie's worth was more then half the cost to make. And thats not counting time and chance to catch the damn fish in the first place. Pies need EP effect with some kind of timer buff if you wont make them stack. What it takes to make a pie, players should have a fisher cook on retainer for diving in pies long before they sip on some little bottle. A little bottle filled with one skill with NPC bought regs and bottle. Butt load of theese game imbalances that leave me scratching my head till it bleeds.

Fishing its how I got into UO in the first place..... sneeky nephew got me in beta fishing for him while he was in bootcamp.
I have been a fisher ever sence. I could have an army of fishers on one boat if I loaded uo all the accounts with a fisher on them.
So you might say I like fishing in game... but what I dont like is the hell you have to do to get a single 105 fishing scroll. I have had HS almost from day 2 of it launching. Not 1 single 105....... I had to buy one on Atlantic for my son who is not so gung ho on patience in the fishing department. So to keep him happy I bought him the 5.

The smartaleck went out and in 2 days got a 110!!! I have still not gotten any scrolls and i have many gm fishers ....on many shards.
Now I will say one of my fishers has better time of doing fishing for mibs. Dont know what it is about him that Sea Slugs love but they practlcaly jump in the boat for him to kill and give him a mib! No joke. But even he cant get a scroll... so i bought him one too. But as for special fish.............zilch (or nearly zilch did get one fish out of 400 bait). Now in the real world I use to go angling with my fishing master hubby(passed away) every weekend. Every angler has their own style and ways of bait and poles.... but I can tell you this in RL at least if i put bait on my hook I get a nibble! and a decient chance of getting that little sucker on my line to shore!

It should be if you got a pole of decient design a percentage up your chances for fish
Second if you use a type of bait again the percentage goes up for catching fish
Thirdly if you have the suit for fishing that should give you the max on percentage of getting fish

So if your base for fishing is say 25% (bare fisher no special hooks bait clothes or luck)
Add in the pole for 10% more that takes you to 35%
Add in the bait for that fish 10% more that takes the total so far to 45%
Now add in the Suit for 25% more that should bring you to 70% Even if you knocked the suit to 10 % ......55% should get you at least 1 quest fish per every 3rd cast and up the chance of getting the rare fish to a decient level over time spent.....

Its not what players are getting... and a fun adition to the game is floundering badly. You need to look at the problems and try a bit more ajusting of a good thing. Oh and btw up the bloody niter deposits! 3 hours mining and under 1500 saltpeter is dreadfull!!!

Yes Lady Storm thats how it is. I focus on one fisher so shes leg and I get lots of scrolls all lvls, oracles, books, lava traps and all baits but Charybdis baits. But whats the use of this when the baits doesnt give anything and the pies are no good? I like fishing alot but could need some reason for doing it from now. My fisher learnt cooking for pies and it seems a waste. And just seeing thoose little baits dissapear for nothing all the time is saddening Some tweaks and this could be so much better!

I totally agree with you. I have a chef waiting on fish... but to be honest I looked at the cost per and how much players were selling that pie..... omg the cost loss was hugh. Drop the price and up the rate of fishing them up!! The mining for niter is horrid so hunting pirates is a once a week thing as you quickly run out of supplys after 2 or 3 ships.... when my son can go through 100 fuse, shot, and charges in a nights hunting and it takes me 3 days to replace it thats a bit much!

I have been hunting tinker legs, solo slasher, solo medusa, solo champ spawns, but really no luck on getting any useful replicas or artifacts at all.

For fishing, I wont even bother to try because its probably same bullcrap story anyways.

My husband has done the fishing in Alaska a couple of times too.
Thus a huge dead fish is hanging off the wall, in our/his *man cave* of a den.
It is a huge rainbow trout. Cost a lot to have that puppy rl taxidermied.
It is hangin on the den wall next to a huge phesant.
I seriously hope he never gets that 12 pt. buck or it too,
may be lookin at me funny, stuffed & hangin off the den wall !

When he DID take me rl fishing, he had to bait the hooks.
I just couldn't do it.
I am not fond of earth worms but just can't see executin em on a hook,
or crickets or whatever live baits,
so he had to do the baiting of the hooks for me.

Last rl fish I caught was on some "bait" fishing jig thingie,
that looked like a rl frog.
Apparently a very large hungry Northern thought it was a live frog and bit.
I reeled that puppy in with help of muscles, husband !
Twas a very tasty Northern too ! LOL

Even when I fish in UO
I am immediately craving RL Fish & Seafood !
Our lil UO traps too, once set up in water,
sorta look like the color,
of some tasty crabmeat, in a package.
Yum !

why the *tormented* pike
or whatever it is, is so *tormented* in UO ?

if you think puttign a worm on a hook is bad, you should try crickets - not only are the things FAST, they tend to ooze out even more than worms do when hooked.

On the other hand, Minnows & shad are fairly simple and easy to use, and artificial baits really only need the ability to tie a good knot (and a little practice with the jelly bait types to properly put the hooks in - which actually is good practice for baiting with the real ones).

The Tormented Pike is the fish that everyone picks on in its school.....
