Fishing Idea

Boots are boring
Small messes of fish are useless

What if the devs turned the Ocean into a giant cavern of the discarded where instead of pulling up useless boots and small messes of fish, there might be a chance at something out of the ordinary, but useful.

I woul drather see somehting more significant done for fishing, but after pulling up my umpteenth pair of boots, this idea popped into my head. At the very least, it would keep my mind a bit more occupied while fishing.....

Interesting idea of something like the Cavern of the Discarded.

How about add this to the mix: Why not add point values to items that get fished up while doing SOS's? It seems the market is flooded or no longer viable for these items.

Either way, the maritime environment of UO needs alot of love.

I like the idea, but let's make it a bit more interesting. :stir:

How about we fish up things thrown away on other shards. So if I'm fishing away on Catskills I could fish up a bag of candlebra's some tinker in training tossed in the garbage on Atlantic, or a bunch of nested backpacks some scripter on Pacific threw away in heartwood.

I know it's probably damn near impossible, but it would be a fun twist.

Please not ...
I shurely would hate it ... Throwing a few items away and fishing them up again a few minutes later on another char. :p
What definately should be done...
- adding shoewares to brit library fishing donations
- adding small fishes to brit library fishing donations (or give us a usefull crafting recipe for them)
- some kind of trade in for items recovered from a shipwreck like maybe 25-50 random items for a random tokuno minor or even another marty
I mean ... those pesky elves at heartwood like human stuff so much, that they are giving away tons of their precious runic working tools. Why doesnt anybody like those fished up items?

I would like to find a use for all the boots and shoes. If they could be cut into leather or used as imbuing ingredients or something. I have a stationary bicycle peddle thingy that I use when fishing. To bad you can't make it interactive like you peddle faster to go faster and slower to go slower or something like that. Well at least it keeps me from getting out of shape from sitting there motionless. I stop to kill sea serpents and water elementals then unload the shoes and boots into their caskets then back to peddling.

Players have been asking for changes to fishing and the oceans of Britannia for years. There have been so many amazing ideas but unfortunately none of them have been added.

This is yet another fun idea that would certainly spice up fishing since the items fished up are random and there is a possibility of a useful item.

I know a lot of it would be junk, but it woul dbe different junk. Every so often in the cavern, I run across something worthwhile.
though.

i could go with making the mess of fishes and the boots turned into the collection, but only if they made it easier to turn the stuff in, like a contribution bag or something.

Cool idea, but where would the system store the items while they are in limbo, prior to being fished up?

Which also makes me wonder, what is the traffic like to the Cavern of the Discarded? If everyone threw away a mass amount of things at once, I wonder how full of crap the area would be. I've never seen more than 5 items down there at one time.

How about we fish up things thrown away on other shards [...] I know it's probably damn near impossible, but it would be a fun twist.
I like this idea as well except it might be too hard to implement ... what about something simple, like a unique fish art on each facet, sorta like the big fish except new like maybe a mackerel, etc (an atlantic salmon, etc hehe)?

And random items could wash up on teh beach just south of Brit. We could call it the Jersey shore!!!!! :)
OH! Hahahaha. I always wanted a rare Snooki weave for my thief.

One thing I've suggested in the past would be to make the small messes of fish stackable, and have them function like the Rose of Trinsic petals (+5 stat, cumulative with Potions or bless, for 5 minutes), instead of the +2% for 15 seconds that they are today. That would make 3 of the 4 useful (the STR ones less than the other 2, because of the rose petals). The refresh ones would need to do something else (say, a minor heal, refresh and mana regain, say 10-20% of the character's max, with a cooldown) instead of the current uselessness.

How about.... no more shipwreck loot until we actually see some more shipwrecks?

Make sea travel far more perilous. You lose your ship to storms, sea monsters, bad seamanship, collisions, acts of the sea gods, etc.. The ship sinks, you drown, your insurance is void, your blessed items are gone. Everything lost in the wreck can then be fished up by anyone. You cannot resurrect until your corpse washes ashore somewhere, so the further you venture out the higher the risk.. the higher the reward, too; more pearls, ancient chests, etc. Add some adventure to the seas.

I've had a gm fisher for at least 10 years and the pre-chest loot has always been the same. I'm definitely ready for something new.

New Ship designs.

A menu that allows you to build your own ship (like a house)

Storms.

Something other than slow butt Sea monsters I can out-sail.

Repair bills for ships left in the water for more than one 24 hour period.

Translucent water in the C-Client. (not hard, add a couple of faint layers like the recent snows but translucent).

Giant Crabs that follow you onto the shore.

Monsters that actually baord your ship (in certain more perilous higher yield areas.

Stack the damn prized fish and give them a realistic use.

PIRATES!!!! They sail around and attack vessels in use. Conversely they board and steal unattended vessels (stops the boat as storage outside my front door concept.)

Waves.

Wakes.

Sharks.

Allow players to enter the water and move at like 25% speed. Additionally, they become vulnerable to Dun dun dun dun dunna dah!!!!!!!!!

Fishing and Treasure hunting have been in desperate need of revamping for YEARS yet nothing is ever done.

They are two very awesome mini wonders in UO .... yet time and time again they are overlooked by the DEV's.

Sad really.

I haven't done much with my Treasure hunter for ages waiting and waiting for a revamp of the loot. And Fishing.... it's only fun with the new red herring and mud puppy ..... but that entertainment was short lived.

I haven't figured out what I'm missing when it comes to catching the new fish. Every search I do turns up nothing.... if only there were a term for clues that lead you nowhere!

I've been fishing more of late (needed some leather), but it would be nice to see an update to the treasures fished up and even an odd item (or inventory of items) with a 0.02% chance every time you cast.

Hell, give me some seaweed every once in a while or a waterlogged reagant and suddenly my interest is peaked a little more in casting endlessly.

I can't help with improving fishing, but mud puppy and red herring are now in the item database with link to the quests that require them. The link is also in this week's update announcement.

Fishing and the ocean in general is such a blank canvas. So many opportunities to add new content and throw a bone (or an entire chest of em'!) to the seafarers of Sosaria. I'd like to see some changes too. Since working a new fisher I've gotten bored of the same old stuff as well.

I like the idea someone listed on page one about using pulled up items from the ocean as some sort of turn in. Perhaps it would be similar to TOT with different things awarded. New monsters to pull in, more danger to the boat if the captain isn't paying attention.. perhaps crashing into a land-mass at full speed will cause damage that a carpenter must fix? After so many hits the boat sinks. I dunno - just brainstorming.

I was reading your ideas and love the brit turn in idea.. Love It.. heh

Heres some of my ideas.

PAINT for our boats.. to color them.

How about boat building..
You buy a basic boat.. and a boat tool kit.. the materials to improve your boat are actually fished up.. so for a vast improvement you'll need to fish alot.. i mean ALOT. Improvements could be battle sails, or new heads for the front, PAINT (hehe), anchors, decorative chests (like white chests with a red stripe or lid or such.), oars, ship shields, cannons, steering wheel thingy, wood, nails, windows, port holes, ect. heh. But make the changes exclusive to fishing and no other skill. Adding items also prepares fishing for later adding bods to the skill.

A sea dungeon.. a dungeon that you must first pass thru a sea cavern to access. Naturally there needs to be harbormasters or someway to prevent people from blocking...but its an idea.. Accessable only by boat.

Bait... for fishing. How about worms. You dig them up and they act as a consumable to increase your odds of fishing up sea serpants. (a consumable)

Remnants of a lost city.. a flooded ruined city lost in the ocean containing a sm. dungeon containing a gardeners paradise of beautiful gardens and lush tropical plants, some unique monsters and a quest person or persons. They give special seeds or plants to travelers from the new worlds. An ancient underwater subteranean race.

How about a portal a vast waterfall that you pass thru that teleports you to the ishtar lake for fishing.

Additional pirate caves that allow you to fish inside as you wander... Each level giving greater danger. (similar to shame dungeon) maybe in tunuko islands.

Fishing up a special type of armor 6 pieces similar to how your able to find armor pieces in dungeons.

Removal of small fish or allowing them to be used for alchemy or cooking or for use in aquariums. I think most of us eat them just to rid ourselves of them or toss on corpses.

Fishing in the deep sea might allow fishing up of an elusive black gem.. used by imbuers or even add a weight to it for tinkers to turn into something like a globe with your name and stones attached. (we like those for player contests, like big fish)

Fish up statues, rocks, drifting shrouds,

I would love to be abkle to build my own boat.

Thre could be a generic blank boat, and for additional costs, much like houses, deco additions could be added. Couple that with various bonuses for using frostwwod, or bloodwood.....

And the idea above for enhancing boats with fished up boating accessories.

Then instead of everyone going around on the same identical boat, everyone could have there own, personally designed boat. From Galleys, to Sloops, to Galleon's.

Chesapeake had a pretty awesome sea battle last night, except for some major bugs which are currently being addressed. That being said, it was wicked.

Here's what I'd like:

Different pre-chest loot. It's a shipwreck, let us pull up ship parts! Some rope, parts of sails, maybe one of them dragon heads...deco stuff, ya know! Also, ships tend to carry gold, right? Maybe toss in a bag of gold now and then.

Speaking of gold, I bet sea serpents are attracted to shiny things...maybe pull up a tougher version of the normal serpent with unique loot possibilities...extra chest, a minor artie, etc. People died on these ships, right? How about some ghosts, liches, whatever...kill them all, and then the Captain spawns. Unique drops from him (Spiced Rum, anyone?)

Ship building / design I would LOVE. Colors, body types...hell make the ship color based on the type of wood used in it's construction, with bonuses to players on the boat or the boat itself should the player be attacked.

More random loot. Right now we have scales and pearls. Add in random junk that currently makes up pre-chest loot. Pull up more than shoes...lets see some pillows, skulls, etc. Random shipwreaks would be a nice touch.

This is a nice idea in concept but the implementation would be terrible and people would get abusive towards Game Masters because boats don't work the way they were used to before they came back to UO.

The big problem with boats at the moment is that one already has to stop and teleport off the boat if killed at sea and you have no friends who can come resurrect your character, and combined with the fact that you can only do this a limited number of times a day, this means that fishing really doesn't work too well.

I thought that the tillerman is supposed to resurrect me at sea but I tried this once and did not get resurrected, perhaps I should have insured my key, this reminds me of another problem:

Ship keys are of various types, and so hard to spot in a backpack full of items - even if I have a lot of clear space in my backpack - the key can usually be found hidden right next to something. It's like they're super-secret stealth ship keys that auto-hide from thieves when generated, even if I'm in Trammel. If the ship keys were a bit larger and more visible to spot in my backpack, insuring them wouldn't be a problem.

I'd like to see larger ship key graphics, especially for the 2D client. I'm sure it's not that much trouble for one of their graphics artists to come up with something that's easier to spot in my fisherman's backpack than a copper key which is identical to the one crafted along with any wooden container.

like i can imagine it now, huge customizable boats, and large sea battles.

reds can be pirates or something. and i like that idea

make it so that there are some kinda major artifact drops in the middle of the sea but make it extremely dangerous or something and unrecallable. would be pretty fun.

I haven't read the entire thread so forgive me if this has been stated here. But a while back, I and many others suggested actually being able to LIVE on your boat. Not just limited to your holds storage, but being able to go down a small flight of steps that opened up to a small room (only accessible if the shops anchor is down), maybe 7x7 ? With the same storage as a small footprint.

They should just remove all the damn boots and sandals and all those useless tiny fishes that no one ever uses. Who wants a buff that lasts as long as a str buff from someone with no eval. Plain old stupid.

I`ve sworn off fishing until I don`t have to clean my pack out every 10 minutes of such useless garbage.

As for footwear to bods.......what if the fisherman doesn`t give a tiny rats behind about bods?

Fishing is straight up irratating to me in its current form. At GM you shouldn`t get as many (or any at all!) boots and useless fish.

I'd like some real sunken ship style treasure and pirate booty style treasure.

Trade ships sailed and sunk loaded with every type good imaginable...

Pirates raided the trade ships and sometimes sank loaded with the loot...

I think more along the lines of ANY item ingame has a chance to appear in a treasure chest, including:

chargers of the fallen

bank checks in the amount of 1 mill (maybe stacks of gold redeemable for a check for 1 mill at a minter)

Artifacts

etc.

Perhaps a few new pirate items could be added over time not all at once...

Eyepatch

Wooden Leg

again, etc...

Any item except veteran rewards should show up in a treasure chest at some point, just make it a rare event to keep it interesting.

Because I support any and all improvements to fishing, I bring you kitty pirate...

But seriously, add more fishing content. Fishing BODs would be great. Maybe special boats with faster speeds or more room in the hold. Paint colors was an excellent idea someone talked about, like perhaps an alchemist could crush up the sea shells to make the paint. What about pictures for the mast? Decorations for the deck? How about the ability for cooks to grind up the fish meat to make bait to catch larger fish? Or add the bait to nets to improve the chances at getting strong sea creatures?

I like this idea, but the seas would be jammed with the new housing. (Unless it counts against the one house rule)
