First Memory of UO?

I didn't understand that we could only place houses in empty places. I was talking to a friend about this when a vet interrupted and told me I'd have to chop trees down to make an open spot to place a house in...and I spent a very frustrating half hour trying to do just that, but the trees never disappeared! I was a total doofus :)
Thats one of the funniest things I read

Anyone remember "ImaNewbie"? His adventures were so hilariously funny ...and took a lot of frustration from me. At last someone struggling against the same unfavourabilities

I forgot about ImaNewbie till you mentioned it , I loved that site.

I'de have to say earliest memories of the game in Sept 1997 was when I didn't understand the karma system.

First I was walking in Trinny and said to myself, what will happen if I attack a guard. The answer came swiftly.

Then I attacked a blue llama which made my character became dastardly , which also at that time meant your character became red.

So i basicaly had a newbie red character. Back then, a red could go into town without anyone being able to attack him (like a blue attacking a blue in town) Except for Dread Lords, they got guard killed on site.

I bought a second copy of UO so that my son and I could play together. My son got his character to the Brit Bank where we were going to meet up. For some strange reason we could not see each other even though we were both at the north west corner of the bank. Finally I paged a Counselor and explained the situation. The Counselor asked me to ask my son if the trees had leaves.
That part reminded me of when my brother started. I had played since '99 and he started just after trammel was created but before housing. I had heard of trammel but had never gone there. My brother was in Brit, and we tried to meet... we were on the phone and I was sure I was at the same spot on a bridge that he was.. this went on and on until I finally thought.... Maybe he's in that Trammel place I had heard of... LOL, he was.

a rl bud gives me cash, armor and weps and a hut on occlo
all my finest armaments on, i open my door and step out into uo
i feel like an agoraphobic venturing out for the 1st time since i figured i couldnt
i am shaking ...literally.

i know town is close
"only a few screens off", i say to myself.
"run like a bat outta hell til you get to town and call the guards if someone is after you".
my buddy is lookin out for me with that advice!

i have not a clue how to run or how to call a guard; total panic mode!
*looks at the keyboard, flails the mouse around and wonders what they do in uo* hahaha!!!

poor kensai tsunami, a char created with such glorious intentions, dashed by a murderer in less than 10 steps out of my home!

i had lost everything my buddy had given me and i felt utterly ashamed to be so lame.
luckily i hadnt given up my house key too.
thx to a warning and planning, i was able to survive the worst; back then if you lost your house key, you lost your house.

i punch my monitor, almost breaking it
i shut off my comp in utter 'flip-out' mode
i call my buddy and go off on him about not warning me of all this unseen stuff
and he laughs and says, "kinda like walkin out your front door aye ...a bad neighborhood isnt it?"

what an a$$head aye?
hahaha

and i have been hooked ever since
uo is so very close to rl ...just in fantasy mode

my first memory of uo, almost 10 yrs ago, is, and will always be, wonderous!

i was a lil bitty weaka$$ spec of a char, but i knew i had hope

...if i had hope :)

...if i had honor

...if i treated ppl how i wanted to be treated

and it has remained that way in all these yrs
i have so many good friends now in uo
some have helped me thru rl things and some i have too
even tho we have never met in rl
there is 'A SPIRIT ALIVE IN UO'
its yours and mine
and its across all the shards
and its a damn cool thing imo

uo is and has remained, thru it's community, unbeatable
i am hoping it remains this way with all the good ppl that play
blessed be to you all

be kind or be paid
:p

Id have to say..

Insta rezzing with skill loss.. remember that?

The Brit graveyard on Pacific right before server down..

Walking from Minoc to Brit.. not knowing about the moongate..

Walking back with an escort still not knowing about the moongate..

Saving up 15k for a boat by cooking bread hours a day for a week and selling it to the baker for 6gp.. then getting the boat stolen a week later..

Saving up for another boat, and sailing to Vesper to mark a rune.. still not knowing about the moongate..

Leaving skinned furs on corpses of animals..

Blue and green tents everywhere blocking peoples front doors.. usually three of them.. small houses on top of towers..

Shadowclan Orcs on Catskills..

Leaving in the middle of a Seer event at the Gathered Spirits to play GTA..

Not buying eggnog for 5k, and old school blackrock for 100k..

Selling my Seer crafted ring and brace for 10k in 99.. and the necklace for 1mil in 2000..

Seeing people play the best MMO out there..

Back then, everyone had a boat. I remember walking by them, and seeing all the stuff on the decks, and one day i tried to reach over and take something, AND I GOT IT. WooooHoooo. I remember hiding on the docks, and when someone would unlock his boat, i would bum rush them, and get on by the tillerman, and have him drop anchor, "off a say macro", and start taking stuff.

The boat owner would yell, forward, left, ect, and get the anchor is down message, and by then i was done. hehe, Remember whn some peoples houses had a tree inside it?

I remember when moongates didnt have a menu to choose where ya want to go. You needed to know the time of day (UO time) it was and you needed a chart to know when to go where.

=) The trick was to keep the map open, and memorize what each place was by the foilage/landscape.

Started a miner then after being fooled by (apparently the oldest trick in the book) into going "grey" I was constantly ganked and trash-talked by a blue character. Decided I'd try something safer and became a bowcrafter/lj out of Minoc. Managed to sell some arrows but had the hardest time finding anything that had feathers that was killable (i.e. it wasn't a harpy). Strayed a little too close to the outskirts and tried to walk to the moongate - both times ganked, dry-looted and trash-talked at almost instantly.

Took me a while to figure things out but became an expert at loot/resource stashing using a stealther to collect under the very noses of the gank-squads :) Must have frustrated a load of folks trying to figure out how I'd been mining for ages yet had little to show for it! Used the same trick in dungeons, stashing loot-drop pouches to keep looted gold/weapons in. I seemed to always be just a little too late - just managing to get a larger house deed right as the last known spot for it was taken. Managed to finally GM Bowcrafting and made my few first uber heavy XBows (remember you had to get the vendor or ID to price them to know if they were what would eventually become "exceptional") - just about the time that Origin nerfed them :(
