Fatal Error when trying to change settings in-game (Vista)

My brother's trying to return to the game, he's installed the game two different ways, once from an old (very old) disc, the other from links from the main website. Each time when he enters the game and tries to change any setting (music off, graphic change etc.), a little 'fatal error' box comes up (the box has no text on it for some reason), and he has to close the program. This is on Classic Client btw.

Anyone else had this prob? He's trying another install now off my 8th Age discs, so fingers crossed heh.

When he starts the game, is he starting it via UOAssist or the desktop shortcut to UO? Either way, please have him right-click whatever shortcut he is using and click 'Run as Administrator' to launch it and see if it gives him the same trouble.

Is he letting it install under \Program Files or is he putting it elsewhere like \Games?

right click uo folder and untick write protection, should solve the issue.
