FAQ On the “In the Shadow of Virtue” Event Cycle (Bane Chosen attacks)

What the Hell's going on? (Short version please.)
An ancient evil, a demon lord named Virtuebane (also called Virtue Bane or VirtueBane) is attempting to take over our realm. The forces of Queen Dawn and its allies take up defensive positions outside of an invaded city, to contain the enemy. If you wish to be a good guy, proceed into the cities and engage the Bane Chosen and the Virtuebane Guards. If you wish to be a bad guy, find the good guys on the outside of the cities and attack them.

Who are these “Bane Chosen?”
Humans who follow Virtuebane. They ride fearsome dragons from the Abyss, which eat a stew made from blackrock. They wear fearsome dragon helms. They first appeared to be a group of racist “human supremacists,” seeking to attack and slay or enslave the “uncivilized races” (everybody but humanity).

Cleverly, the Bane Chosen first attacked a fellow evil: The Ophidians. To get us to attack Ophidians was easy; the Ophidians are a known evil, they invaded our cities just a few short years back; and they have harassed the people of Papua for years. But after that they showed their true colors by camping at the Spirituality Shrine in Ilshenar and encouraging us to attack the Meer, known allies of Britannia and good-aligned creatures. Then, they occupied Magincia Island and have built their foul lord an altar over what used to be the Magincia Moongate. Over that altar there sits a different moongate which, it appears, has been used by Virtuebane to enter our world physically. Now, they are invading the cities, one at a time (one every other day), in an attempt to take us over. Now they are also holding hostage Queen Dawn's husband, the good-hearted, hapless Ors.

Wait, didn't I read Queen Dawn commanded the Bane Chosen?
Few things could be clearer than that Queen Dawn is NOT behind the Bane Chosen.

So who or what is Virtuebane (or VirtueBane or VirtueBane), exactly?
He is an ancient demon lord, whose ambitions are pretty much spelled out in his name. He wishes to undo virtue. Attracted by Pride and encouraged by ruin, he appears to have been behind the long-ago destruction of the great City of Magincia. (The Shadowlords, originally thought to be behind that attack, now appear to have not been behind the attacks, just piggy-backing on them in an attempt to get into our world.)

His more specific and immediate ambitions appear to be three-fold. Firstly, he wishes to prevent Queen Dawn from rebuilding Magincia. Secondly, he wishes to subjugate, slaughter, enslave, and do all the nasty things that demon lords wish to do. Thirdly, he wishes to acquire the Crystal of Duplicity, an ancient artifact of Britannia, which was used to create Trammel, and which Queen Dawn thought could help undo the demonic magic that prevented rebuilding in Magincia. He attacked the City of Britain to get it (remember that “Blackrock Elemental” attack where the reward was the replica of a mysterious crystal display)? But it's pretty clear that he does not have it, and is still looking.

There is a new graphic in the game for Virtuebane, but to my knowledge he's only been seen in-game on the Great Lakes shard.

Why don't the Bane Chosen attack me if they are evil?
They are very clever, and will only attack those who have negative loyalty to them. You get negative loyalty to them by attacking and killing them. By this they appear to be attempting to trick us into believing that they are less evil than they clearly are.

From a game mechanics perspective, this also allows the players to pick a side easier. If the Chosen attacked everyone, most people would fight them regardless.

What are the rewards for participating in this event?
There have been various rewards for participation at the various levels of this event.

The pattern, though, is pretty clear. At the outset, the Bane Chosen offered superior rewards, but as the event has progressed the good side's rewards have finally caught up.

I will not list all of the rewards for past phases here, but for the current phase the rewards are thus.

For fighting on the evil side, there are sashes that have DCI and give you a peculiar effect on spells you cast: Lower damage at first, then an accumulated damage bonus.

For fighting on the good side, there are two rewards. On the Virtuebane Guards, there are Fey Slayer katanas called Defilers of Virtue. On the others of Virtuebane's armies, there are crystals which, when applied to a weapon, makes that weapon Brittle and gives it a new property called Rage Focus. Rage Focus causes a weapon to do lesser damage at first, then an accumulated damage bonus. In my tests, Rage Focus, if you are lucky, will easily cause a non-slayer weapon to do slayer level damage. If you are not lucky, it makes you do LESS damage after all.

All rewards at this stage are found on the corpses of slain creatures.

Why do other evils, such as Minax and Exodus, appear to have played a role in events?
They appear to be red herrings, for the most part. Minax, we know, played a role earlier on, when a low-level underling of hers offered rewards in the Treasures of Ricardo quest. So we know she's still around someplace but she at first blush appears to have no immediate role beyond that. She is Minax, though, and could easily show up for any reason at any time.

Is there a purpose to having loyalty beyond the amount used to acquire various rewards?
Not that's been revealed yet. Anything's possible. Chance and the dev team decide.

Some of the previous phases, though, have had rewards based around loyalty rating.

How do I participate?
Say "news" to town cryers, if a city's being invaded they will tell you. Otherwise they will just cycle through the cities that have already been invaded and give the city by city results of the fighting. Once you hear of a city being invaded, go to it and choose your side by killing stuff on the other side.

On some shards (Great Lakes in particular) the Event Moderators hold events to round out the storyline and fill in the gaps.

Also watch UO.com.

Why do I want to participate?
That's up to you. You might want the rewards, you might feel you or your character have an interest in one side or the other winning. Or you might just be bored and happen to hear of an invasion going on.

Sorry if I got anything wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me if I did. And I'm sure I left stuff out. Frankly this has already taken about 20 minutes to write and I want to move onto something else. So now I'm clicking "submit" without so much as final proofread.

And I'm further informed it's possible that not all of the Chosen may be entirely human. Among other things, the slayer type is Repond which is usually defined as "humanoid but not human per se." 'Course that could mean they started out as humans and became something else. And indeed when they first appeared they were no slayer type at all.

Wow, thanks, this one should be stickied. It would be nice if we had something like this specifically for Great Lakes. I like going to the EM events, but unfortunately, I can't attend them every week, so it is very difficult for me to know what is going on, especially since I came into the storyline late anyhow.

Question: How does this relate to the events of Ultima Prime, namely, the destruction of Magincia?

Here's the part that gets me:
... if you are lucky
If you are not lucky...
My understanding is that there is only ONE person that doesn't know that luck is broken, and you ain't him (hint, he is a mouthpiece for EA). I just dropped all mine to 10k'ish - if it actually involves luck, guess maybe 1-5k might be a better price, what a waste.

otherwise, very nice write-up! well done
thanks

Thank you, and you're welcome.

On Great Lakes, this outline applies, there's just a lot more background material, trimmings, and a near-unbearable level of intensity (I mean that as a complement, btw), thanks to the weekly EM events. On Great Lakes we've been fighting Virtuebane for a long, long time; we just didn't know who he was until recently. I actually did do a post much like this some months ago for GL, on the GL Forum, but I did it in RP-style and it's months out of date by now anyway. I won't be able to get back on to look for it for some hours; but when and if I do find it I'll PM you the link. I think the EMs deserve a good amount of credit for how GL hasn't lost a single city to Virtuebane. Their work has made the scenario more "in your face" and invested it with more meaning. Even those who don't go to the events are usually moderately aware of what's going on in them, so they have a good ripple effect.

As to Ultima Prime....From what I can tell, like almost all scenarios in UO, this one is based on Ultima Prime but follows it only loosely.

From an RP/fiction perspective look at it this way....We are on a distorted mirror image of the "original" world (Ultima Prime), and we have similar kinds of things. But sometimes from up close they look only vaguely similar.

Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar gave showed us the aftermath of the destruction of Magincia (which took place off-stage, between Ultima 3 and Ultima 4). We met Virtuebane, who in Ultima Prime wasn't a demon lord as I recall, just a regular demon, who'd at-most supervised the destruction of Magincia. He gloated about the devastation and said Magincia had fallen for its Pride.

So, alter this to UO and we have a similar dynamic...Magincia's Pride brought about the attack, but for us there seem to be good reasons to consider the destruction less as punishment for Pride, and more as a consequence of Pride. Pride attracted Virtuebane. And Virtuebane for us is not just a demon, but a demon lord, full of Prideful majesty, and power, and ambition. A "big villain" in his own right, to stand alongside Exodus, Minax, Mondain, Blackthorn, Casca, the Shadowlords, etc.

Now, of course, in Ultima Prime we also saw New Magincia eventually emerge. New Magincia was a rather humble, village-ish city, based in the Virtues, especially Humility. The residents of New Magincia had learned from the downfall of the Prideful "Old" Magincia. Draconi hinted, during Magincia's destruction in UO, that we'd get a New Magincia or something like it.

But that was years ago. We can't really tell what the devs' plans could be now. I should hope it's something more than "rebuild Magincia as it was, plop it down where it used to be." And if it is that, I should hope they populate it with Humble, Virtuous NPCs to at least show that the NPCs of UO are capable of growing, changing, learning.

One thing, though, is near-certain: The plans, both in-character (from the Queen) and out-of-character (from Cal and the team), is to rebuild something on that island.

Oh I hear you there luck has been broken forever and so has the RNG but I seriously doubt they will ever be "fixed".

As for the crystals .... other than looking interesting like power crystals it's useless to store them since they don't stack..... shocker I know. Like so many things in UO this seriously is something that needs addressed. WHY do they not stack?????? Arcane crystals stack..... I can not understand why these do not. This is why no one loots them anymore. If they stacked and only took up one slot hey I might have 800 of them..... but since they don't I have about 10... waste of space if you ask me to keep any more than that.

Fantastic write up Galen. Highly useful.

grig_since98 ask Galen or Martyna about this. I believe both of them have worked VERY hard on a wiki of some sort that covers the EM Events on GL's. Especially Malachi's Spy Missions which are every Tuesday evening at 8pm CST.

Thank you, and you're welcome; I'm very glad this has been useful to people.

I didn't mean the item property luck. If the item property luck plays a role, I'm unaware of that role. And, dear Lord, I hope the item property luck doesn't play a role....That would be terrible.

Although your post does remind me of something important: "Luck" in UO, when it doesn't mean the item property luck, means the RNG.

Which, like the item property, is acknowledged to be broken. The team spoke openly about how it wasn't just broken, but seems to actively resist being fixed.

Oh well.

Myself, I don't use Rage Focus save to have tested it. I prefer the solid certainty of doing a steady level damage.

... well, if they used the Crystal of Duplicity to create Trammel, which was a pristine "good" copy of Felucca, it would be possible that the Virtuebane daemon is actually the representation of the opposite of Lord British.

Which means it would be quite a bit more dangerous than just a normal Daemon.

I haven't seen such a list.

It was a surprise to me that shards other than GL have seen him!

I was glad, just surprised.

He's not been on Europa, and our EMs are usually very good at keeping up with the Shard-wide but ad-libbed arc-related events (such as the loss of the crystal), so it's possible Virtue Bane has just been used on Great Lakes and elsewhere as a bit of improvised extra fluff, rather than a plot advancing event...

I wish they'd hurry up and get to those though; Europa hasn't lost a city yet, but I hear from the dedicated defenders they've got around 3 characters up to maximum positive reputation from the now repetitive and dull and dragging invasions. I've personally just got another 600 rep to go to Meer maximum myself.

That's neat.

I think we can expect the details of his personality to differ slightly but noticeably shard-to-shard, like those of Casca or Queen Dawn or other EM-played characters.

Addition:

How do you get a pet Bane Dragon?

The ones from the invasions are not tamable. However, one that is tamable spawns among a pack of hell hounds in the central area of the Stygian Abyss that is inhabited by the Slasher of Veils.

These swamp dragon variants only eat a few things; the tasty (and really tasty) treats from quests in Ter Mur, and their preferred food, Blackrock Stew.

Blackrock stew can be acquired two ways.

One, if you have 5000 loyalty to the Bane Chosen, is a quest to trade Crystalline Blackrock (the imbuing ingredient, found from mining in Ter Mur, colored ore elementals, and some of the event spawn) to a quest NPC in the Bane camp.

The other, if you have 5000 loyalty to the Ophidians & Meer, is to do a quest given by an Ophidian in the Ophidian Desert Outpost. This quest gives a recipe that can be used by any SA-entitled cook (not just the quest taker), though any given character can only complete the quest once. The recipe will require he cook to ALSO have the recipe for Rotworm Stew from a Goblin quest NPC in the underworld. The recipe for blackrock stew requires NORMAL small pieces of blackrock (gained from mining anywhere, and often found lying about as it DOES NOT DECAY), and a Bowl of Rotworm Stew.

In the long run, the latter is not only cheaper, it is more likely to remain in play after the Bane Chosen are defeated (the BC quest NPC might disappear, but a recipe learned is never unlearned)
