5/24/2018 – Ready to conclude their deal, the rangers traveled back to Ilshenar to find the merchant Nico Radu. After speaking to him though he revealed there was a small problem that needed to be addressed. He had charged his cousin Sasha with the task of creating the replica paintings that he had sold to the rangers, however he had not received the paintings nor heard from Sasha in some time and so he requested that the rangers accompany him on a journey through Ilshenar to find Nico’s cousin.
Along the way they encountered a barricade set up by several ratmen who were furious with Nico Radu because a tonic he had sold them had not lived up to all of their expectations. Nico attempted to calm the angered ratmen but, furious over Nico’s refusal to issue a refund, they attacked and were ultimately defeated.
Later they arrived at the Twin Oaks tavern, where Nico said they should rest. As they rested in the tavern’s quiet halls he related a tale of how he happened across the paints: a mad wizard who sought out the skull of a primeval monster wished to make a deal with Nico, and Nico employed a brave group of adventurers to find it. He was able to trade the skull to the mage but all the mage was able to offer in return was enchanted paints. Afterwards the mage died to the monster of the very skull he had acquired after using magic to summon it, giving Nico a chance to retrieve it with another band of adventurers, who he paid with magic beans and later resold the same skull for a handsome profit.
As they continued through the wind-swept mountains north of the spider caves they came upon three frost trolls who were unhappy with the ice box that Nico had sold them, claiming that it wasn’t making anything cold. Nico attempted to explain to them that putting things that are already cold in an ice box will not make them colder, but upon hearing that he would not be able to offer a refund the frost trolls went berserk and attacked everyone around them. Ultimately they were defeated.
The group continued northeast, and crossing over into the desert lands occupied by other gypsies, and there they encountered Sasha in one of the encampments. Sasha revealed his betrayal, saying that he intended to keep the paintings and the paints and would corner the painting market from Nico. Using his own special painting gem and the magical paints entrusted to him by Nico, Sasha began painting monstrosities that attacked the rangers as they pursued him into the barren wastes. Amid the chaos of fighting from all of the abominations that he wrought, Sasha managed to escape, but as the final painted entity fell the rangers found the rewards which Nico had promised them…
