5/23/2019 – The rangers encountered Sir Geoffrey at the Rangers Guild Hall, who had arrived to report unrest in Jhelom resulting from the corruption of the Shrine of Valor. Some in the city were furious with the rangers for failing to thwart the assault, while some, particularly among the ranks of the Brothers in Arms believed the rangers were aligned with the Hand of Death against them. Rolf had also managed to find an alternative source of dream venom that was once again increasing tensions throughout the isles. Sir Geoffrey therefore sought the rangers assistance in attempting to save Rolf.
Upon arriving in Jhelom, Sir Geoffrey and the rangers went to the Brothers in Arms school, where they found a few of the students such as Tremain and Renfry. Neither of the warriors seemed entirely themselves, it being apparent they were actively under the effects of the dream venom. Seemingly distracted by hallucinations of dream like visions, both of the warriors were unable to effectively converse with Sir Geoffrey which he was able to use to draw out information from the confused warriors, learning that Rolf is actively out in the town looking to “clean it up”. Concerned that Rolf had returned to the warpath, the group made their way to the Hand of Death school.
At the school of the Hand of Death, they found several students of the Hand of Death and the Brothers in Arms locked in combat, while other students of the Hand of Death manned a barricade at the entrance. The rangers provided some assistance for the Hand of Death by knocking out the Brothers in Arms students, earning a bit of rare gratitude from Skinner, one of Rufus’ most trusted instructors. Skinner claimed that Rolf had finally gone insane and had sent his students to kill off the Hand of Death while he went off searching for the hidden school of the Library of Scars. For the rangers’ assistance, Skinner offered a suggestion of checking the Horse’s Head tavern, where he had heard that Library of Scars students tend to congregate.
The rangers found a scene of utter chaos within the rowdy pub, seeing it littered with the bodies of Library of Scars students and the two most stubbornly strong warriors of the Brothers in Arms, Hodge and Bosco, standing over them. Both of the burly warriors seemed lost in their own venom-induced hallucinations as well, confusing the rangers for Hand of Death warriors and launching into an attack. Despite their considerable skill, the rangers were able to knock them out of the fight and save the remaining Library of Scars student that sat wounded in the corner. Though the student refused to say where the secret school of the Library was located, he did pass on a message that his headmaster, Vasuki, had an interest in meeting with the rangers to discuss something. The elusive headmaster, according to the student, could be found behind the theater on Jhelom’s southern isle.
Shortly thereafter the rangers found themselves at the very location, and before long Vasuki appeared and introduced himself. The headmaster first asked the rangers for their aid in the future, as they had provided aid to the Brothers in Arms and the Hand of Death. He also seemed to suggest he knew a great deal about Rolf and of some hidden truth behind it all, yet seemed uninterested in explaining what it was, as it was not a part of his plan for them to know. Before leaving, he told the rangers where they could find Rolf, in a location he was unsuccessfully searching for the hidden Library school. With that, Vasuki silently departed.
Soon after, the rangers and Sir Geoffrey encountered Rolf in the jungles of the northern isle. Despite the rangers’ attempt to talk Rolf down, he only became more and more enraged due to the influence of the dream venom in his system until finally ordering his students to attack. While the rangers managed to strike a grievous blow against the mighty headmaster, in a fit of rage he consumed an dangerous amount of dream venom, and with the combination of his out of control rage, an unexpected event occurred – from behind Rolf an unusual manifestation took form. Like out of some kind of nightmare, the creature seemed to lash out on Rolf’s behalf, fighting alongside the injured headmaster until the rangers were able to destroy the dream manifestation and knock out Rolf. Despite what they witnessed, no one could explain the bizarre manifestation that seemed to be a product of Rolf’s immeasurable rage.
